Royal British Legion Portugal Branch

Spring Newsletter

Welcome to the Spring Newsletter from the Royal British Legion (Portugal) Branch.

We hope that you are enjoying the Spring and send our apologies if you feel that we

have not communicated regularly enough with you - we will try and do better in the

future....

Our lunches offer friendship and fellowship

We are pleased to report that the RBL lunches on the third Wednesday of the month in the

Central area and the first Sunday of the month lunch in the East continue to give members a

great opportunity to enjoy fellowship with other members as well as not having to cook or do

the washing up!

Each member is encouraged to remember that we should invite prospective members to come

to our events. The Royal British Legion needs new members and those moving to Portugal

will surely find good contacts and friendship when they join us.

Porto

The RBL Porto Group helps people throughout the year but its fund raising activity is

focussed around the six weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

If you know someone living in the Porto area who would like to make contact with the group,

the local representative for Porto is Adrian Bridge, who will be pleased to supply more

information.

Madeira

The Madeira Group is a vibrant group enjoying some of the best that life offers on the lovely

island of Madeira.

Sadly, Nick Martin, who has been the representative for Madeira has resigned and the new

representative is Susan Marloye-James. Susan will be pleased to supply more information for

anyone in the Madeira area that would like to make contact with the group.

Susan’s first official function was to lay a wreath at the 81st Anniversario da Fundacao do

Nucleo do Funchal na Regiao Autonoma da Madeira on 2nd

of March. Our new standard

bearer, Jean Blair performed her duties for the first time.

Our second function was held on March 11th

. This was our Spring Dinner. There were 79

people in attendance. The dinner raised 600 Euros plus 15 Euros from the ‘shrapnel’from last

year’s collection which Sue managed to get for the local coin man!

A special guest was in attendance- Ian Lisle, the Cambridgeshire Representative for the

Riders Branch 3542 happened to be on holiday on the island, and was accompanied to the

dinner by Jo.

a certificate of appreciation. His long suffering wife, Agueda, was presented with a small

bouquet.

28th

June. Please feel free to attend.

Centenary Anniversary of Events of The Great War- Battle of Jutland

The Battle of Jutland took place between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas

Fleet on the 31st May 1916 in the North Sea, off the mainland of Denmark. Although it was

the only major naval battle of World War I, it became the largest sea battle in naval warfare

history in terms of the numbers of battleships and battle cruisers engaged. It brought together

the two most powerful naval forces in existence at that time.

MY BOY JACK by Rudyard Kipling

“Have you news of my boy Jack?”

Not this tide.

“When d’you think that he’ll come back?”

Not with this wind blowing and this tide.

“Has anyone else had word of him?”

Not this tide.

For what is sunk will hardly swim,

Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?”

None this tide, Nor any tide,

Except he did not shame his kind-

Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.

Then hold your head up all the more,

This tide, And every tide;

Because he was the son you bore,

And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

the Irish Guards went missing in September 1915 during the Battle of Loos.

Good-Bye, Farewell, Adieu.......

We would like to say a big thank you and farewell to our Bugler of many years, Neville

Woodcock (background). Sadly, he cannot play the bugle any more but hopefully will

continue to collect for the Poppy Appeal.

We would also like to acknowledge the wonderful job Nick Martin has done in Madeira. He

has tirelessly (?) worked for ten years to make the Madeira Group of the Royal British Legion

one of the most vibrant and productive groups of the Portuguese branch of the Royal British

Legion. He will be missed very much!
