Rotary Club of Kincumber Inc. Annual Report 2019 - 2020

President’s ReportSandy Hunt-Sharman`Rotary Connects the World’

This year has been amazing – unlike any other!

We have experienced drought, bushfires and the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Our response to Covid 19 was immediate, reaching out to the community to assess any needs as well as conducting Rotary meetings by zoom, one of the first in the District – commenced 23 March.

Up until February we had been fulfilling our Rotary goals of supporting communities - internationally, nationally and locally.

We financed these activities through the ‘Due Diligence’ of our Treasurer Tina Latham plus fund raising

• Movie nights – Ride Like a Girl and Pavarotti

• Bunnings BBQ’s – Erina and West Gosford

• Rotary Christmas Raffle

We continued our Club Learning and Development through:

• Rotary Learning Institute – Bruce Dent, John Heuston and Neil Simpson attended this year.

• Visioning exercise on developing the Shipbuilders Heritage Walk

• District Assembly – majority of Members were able to attend (via zoom) and the breakout sessions

• Club Assembly (via zoom)

• International Convention (via zoom)

We continued our support of the Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre through a special Covid 19 District Grant of $6,000 which has enabled the:

• Hiring of a truck to collect food, as often as required, from Sydney for the KNC Food Pantry

• Donation of funds for a 10’ Refrigerated Container for storage of perishable food

• Sharing of the collected food with Green Point and Kariong Community Centres

We continued our weekly collection of bread (the “Bun Run”) in conjunction with Green Point Bakehouse. We also have a team working each week at the centre to help pack food bags and stock the pantry.

We continued our support of 10 local schools with their `Citizenship Program’ where we donate $500 (from our Christmas Raffle funds) to each school. We attend the presentation of the awards at the schools.

We continue to fund schools to participate in our RYPEN program sponsoring 5 children this year.

In February, Brent Walker, the Principal of Kincumber High School contacted us with the sad news that one of his pupils had passed away in a house fire.

The family lost everything. We were able to secure a RAWCS Rotary Australian Compassionate Grant (RACG) to help collect tax deductable donations for the family.

The next stage was amazing, the local businesses, churches, school groups, Abby’s friends, sports teams, Girl Guides and Rotary started working together. A small group met weekly in Brent’s office (coffee and chocolate biscuits provided) to help plan the way ahead – funeral, sibling counselling, selecting furniture, bedding, clothes etc and generally supporting the family physically and financially.

With this generous support we were able to help the family rebuild their lives.

Rotary Club of Kincumber Inc. Annual Report 2019 - 2020

Locally we supported:

• Seniors EXPO x 2

• Graffiti removal

• Cleanup Australia program

• Small Business Network

• BowelCare program

• Hat Day – mental health awareness program

• Sponsorship of Coast Opera Australia – through our `Pavarotti’ movie night

• Local Rural Fire Service with donated food worth $1000 from local supermarkets.

Nationally we supported the Rural Fire Service Appeal.

Internationally we supported:

• Purchase of wheelchairs for FIJI

• Education of a child through the `Sustainable Cambodia’ program

• Anti-Poaching Unit in Zimbabwe

• ShelterBox

• Polio Plus through our `Ride Like a Girl’ movie night

• Three Rotary Exchange Students – one visited the school we are supporting in Cambodia

In October we celebrated FIJI Day with a LOVO at Brisbane Water Historical Society grounds. The food was fabulous plus we were entertained by Fijian and Tongan dancers thanks to Leba for organizing.

Our world changed with the arrival of the Coronavirus Pandemic

We were very proactive in encompassing weekly zoom meetings where our attendance increased but meeting income decreased hence we agreed to a quarterly levy.

We see our immediate future as:

• Both zoom and face to face meetings.

• A mix of both for those who are unable to attend meetings in person.

• Small group activities such as care of Shipbuilders Memorial surrounds and plinths.

• Individual graffiti removal kits kits to enable spot cleaning.

We have researched and prepared two very exciting programs:

• XRay collection and Myopia screening of school children.

I would like to congratulate `Team Kincumber’ on its wonderful achievement during the 2019 - 2020 year demonstrating that “Rotary Connects the world”.

Finally, I wish Bruce Dent the very best in his year as our Rotary Club President 2020-2021

Rotary Club of Kincumber Inc. Annual Report 2019 - 2020

Report on MembershipGraeme DaviesThe Club began the year with a Membership Plan based on Rotary International’s Strategic Plan and the Club Visioning 2015-20 which had set a target “To increase the size of the club’s membership to 45 members by 30 June 2020”. From the outset the 2019-20 Plan recognised that this target was most likely unattainable. The plan did state however thatthe target may well be achieved in the next one to two years.

The Club was very pleased to welcome four new members, Frank Archibald, Don Anderson, Claire Job and Brent Walker. Regrettably Susan Seale has decided to relinquish her membership in 2020-21. The club is pleased to acknowledge Suzy’s positive contribution over the period of her membership and wishes her well with her future interests.

The Club was saddened to learn of the passing of long-term member PDG Jim Dowling. This distinguished gentleman contributed so much to Rotary and our club in particular. Many members were able to express our condolences to Helen at Jim’s Memorial Service.

A feature of the year was the Club’s ability to accommodate members facing special circumstance that impacted on their attendance at meetings and projects.

The change to fortnightly meetings was generally well received by members. The attendance at the “off meeting week” social gatherings at the Avoca Beach Bowling Club is testament to their perceived value. Nevertheless it has been the acceptance by the majority of members of the ZOOM meetings over the past several weeks as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions that demonstrate the cohesion of the Club membership. Credit for this rests especially with the leadership of President Sandy and the generosity and technical skills of Rtn Tina. Another indicator of this engagement has been the strong attendance of members at Virtual District Assembly over April /May.

The Club’s Projects have also enhanced member satisfaction and engagement. This has been particularly evident in support for the Christmas Raffle, Graffiti Removal, Clean-up Australia, the significant link with the Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre in providing for families in need, the support for work in enhancing the Shipbuilders Memorial (the Club’s signature project ) and the response to the Reardon Family’s tragedy through a Rotary Australia Compassionate Grant.

Whilst not all membership initiatives listed in the membership plan were achieved or even initiated the Club has ended the year with a net growth of one, has achieved a good member retention percentage and has a good gender balance. We will commence the 2021 Rotary year with 27 members.

The Rotary Foundation Jan Brown

GOALS: from Club Visioning 2015-2020

* New vision goal

1. Fund two (2) Global Grants for International Projects. *

2. 100% Members are Centurions.

3. Club members aware of the Rotary Foundation work.

The 2019 – 2020 Rotary year brought with it many challenges including continued drought, the worst Australian bushfires on record and a worldwide pandemic. Covid 19 triggered economic hardship, social upheaval and political unrest around the globe.

Rotary is no stranger to fighting worldwide challenges of hardship and disease and continues to be a major driver in the fight to eliminate Polio. The Rotary Club of Kincumber held a fundraiser for Polio Plus at the Avoca Beach Theatre with the showing of an inspiring movie, Ride Like a Girl.

A joint venture with the Kincumber Neighbourhood Centre commenced following the impact of Covid 19, with an increase in local community members struggling to meet basic needs. An enthusiastic team of our Rotary Club members have been involved in collecting, sorting and helping to distribute food at the Neighbourhood Centre each week. An application for a Rotary Foundation District Grant to provide refrigeration and to cover costs for transporting food from suppliers Second Bite, some local food suppliers and The Food Bank, is underway.

The Rotary Club of Kincumber met its 2019-2020 fundraising goals and made donations to Polio Plus and the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund totalling $4,395. I would like to acknowledge those members who generously donated and became Centurions this year, those who make yearly personal contributions as Paul Harris Fellows and all members who gave their time to fundraise and support The Rotary Foundation in doing good in the world.

A thank you also to all who have supported me in my role, particularly Tina, our incoming Foundation Chair for 2020-2021. Being Kincumber Rotary Foundation Chair for the past three years, and taking my place as a Board member, has provided me with an insight into how our Club operates and an appreciation of how amazing this organisation known as ROTARY is.

GOALS: Public Image and Awareness from Club Visioning 2015-2020

• Regular presence in local media, print, radio, local newspaper & TV.

• Promotion in high profile businesses and corporations

• Rotary is a household name, known for its professionalism.

The Club takes the image of the Rotary brand seriously and has strived to promote that positive image wherever possible. At every event opportunities have been taken to display signage, provide membership brochures and have Rotarians on hand to answer questions.

The major focus for the first half of the year was the Shipbuilders Heritage Walk (SHW) and by association the Shipbuilders Memorial (SM).

To support this it was identified the Rotary Club of Kincumber was an extremely hard working organisation, however few people within the local community seemed aware of the organisation or its activities. The SHW would raise the Club’s profile particularly within the 4 Villages Walk area.

The Rotary Club of Kincumber’s involvement in developing the SHW as a major event would:

• Raise the profile of the Club particularly within a significant part of its catchment area.

• Give an opportunity to provide information directly to the community regarding the Rotary Club of Kincumber and Rotary in general.

• Meet a community responsibility in seeking greater participation from the local community and other organisations in a unique event celebrating the area’s significant history and heritage.

• Meet corporate responsibilities of the Rotary Club of Kincumber in seeking greater support from Businesses, Museums, Historical/Heritage Societies, Display contributors, etc.

• Act with fiscal responsibility by developing an event that could provide a ‘return’ on the public funds Council was investing.

An important part of the report on the 2019 SHW : was recommendations for a strategic approach to the development of the Walk. This development strategy was based on feedback from Club members including through a visioning exercise, community individuals/groups, businesses, participating/potential partners, tourism professionals, etc.

All materials produced clearly identified the SHW as a project of the Rotary Club of Kincumber. At each of the 4 Border Post/Display stations local historical displays were set up. Rotary related material was also displayed and Members manning the stations all wore Club T-shirts. Banners promoting the walk were prepared and hung in prominent locations.

As in previous years the Club sought and was successful in securing a Central Coast Council community grant. This freed up funds to prepare materials promoting Rotary. Much of the art-work was done “in-house” saving valuable funds for expenditure on other items.

In the New Year, Covid 19 restrictions caused cancellation of the 2020 SHW and also brought most other PI actives to a halt.

In June with Covid 19 restrictions easing an on-site meeting was held with Council officers to identify much needed gardening works. Six Club members participated in clearing growth from around the Shipbuilders Memorial plaques.

GOALS: from Club Visioning 2015-2020

1. Club committed to Polio Free world.

2. Support Rotary Clubs’ overseas projects, funding 6 wheelchairs.

3. Sponsoring Days for Girls Avoca Beach through supporting fundraising efforts.

This Rotary year the Club commenced sponsoring a child through primary and high school by funding the school sponsorship program with Sustainable Cambodia (SC) via Rotary/RAWCs.

The Club’s sponsored child, SIV Sovanpanha is a primary school student in year 5. The club looks forward to seeing Sovanpanha progress at school through the coming years of sponsorship.

PP Christine, Margaret and exchange student Jeanne visited Sustainable Cambodia earlier this year to learn about the Rotary projects sponsored by Rotary Clubs worldwide. Sustainable Cambodia has many projects in their local community, such as clean water, sanitation, irrigation, food security, health care and education.

West Gosford, Kincumber, Lautoka Rotary Clubs and the Wheelchair Foundation jointly funded and sponsored the purchase of 240 wheelchairs for Fiji at a cost of $18,500 US.

The project recommenced on 30 May 2020 following delays experienced due to COVID-19. The wheelchairs are being produced in China, with an estimated completion date being 20 July 2020.

The Wheelchair Foundation will continue to manage the project including the transportation and delivery to Fiji. The Rotary Club of Lautoka will be managing Govt duty exemption and work with their local NGO partners to facilitate the distribution of the wheelchairs to disabled children and adults in the western region of Fiji.

A local business-woman and humanitarian Bev Campbell was a guest speaker at a TEK night earlier this Rotary year and spoke about her life growing up in Rhodesia now Zimbabwe and her work supporting Anti-Poaching Units.

Bev Campbell and the Kincumber Rotary Club funded the supply work boots for Anti-Poaching Unit in Zimbabwe.

Vocation John Heuston

GOALS: from Club Visioning 2015-2020

1. Pride of Workmanship Awards – max 4 awards - increased participation and prestige

2. Club visits to various enterprises and worksites – 2 per year

3. Community Service Award – locally recognised and promoted

4. Facilitate nomination for District Vocational Excellence Award.

The year 2019 - 2020 has been one of planning then postponement.

Thank you to President Sandy for making contact with Royal Prince Henry Hospital where there is on display items used in the past for the treatment of Polio. In view of Rotary’s involvement with Polio Eradication interest was expressed by sufficient members to plan a visit.

This was to be a Vocational visit. However due to Covid 19 restrictions the visit has been postponed until next year.

The last Polio outbreak in Australia was in 1956 and led to mass vaccinations.

Our Pride of Workmanship presentations usually held annually is still on hold. Thank you to those members who have suggested worthy recipients. Please stay aware for those in our workforce deserving of recognition.

The next year should see plans made during 2019-2020 come to fruition.

Youth Neil Simpson

GOALS: from Club Visioning 2015-2020

• Actively sponsor RYPEN, MUNA, Science and Engineering Challenge, Youth Exchange, RYLA and National Youth Science Forum

• Review and continue financial contribution to schools in our area - encourage their participation in Rotary Youth Programmes.

• Encourage members to support fund raising ventures such as our Christmas Raffle to provide the funds to continue youth activities.

• Look for new fund raising initiatives for funding youth programmes.

• Endeavour, in co-operation with staff and students from Kincumber High School to establish an Interact Club.

• Find some incentives to encourage more youth participation in our 4 Villages Walk by approaching schools, sporting clubs and youth groups.

The club continued its support of the local youth with its programs designed to involve the children in ways that will develop their personal skills and confidence. Due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions there has been a significant reduction in activities

However the RYPEN camp at Narrabeen was conducted prior to restrictions being imposed. The Kincumber club has sponsored five students from Kincumber High School to attend these camps. The participants have all benefitted immensely from being involved. The experiences will equip them to become more willing to involve themselves not only in their school communities, but also in their local communities.

More broadly in the community, the Kincumber Club financially sponsored ten local schools with a donation towards their “Citizenship” awards. Each school has its presentation of awards day every year. A club representative has attended each school and presented the award, showing the general community of the Club’s commitment to the youth in our local area.

The first half of this year has seen a number of other youth programmes postponed, however as things return to “normal”, this involvement in the youth of the local area will also return.

Youth Exchange Jan Brown

Jeanne Bruyr, our inbound student from Belgium will be leaving Australia in August with a great love of our country and respect for its people. Jeanne celebrated her 18th birthday here in Oz with a fun birthday gathering at Avoca Beach. She loved going to school at Kincumber High, had an amazing experience with the Sustainable Cambodia Program and will take back wonderful memories of Australia to share with family and friends. A thank you is extended to the host families who supported Jeanne during her stay as without them Youth Exchange could not exist.

To be living in another country during the Covid 19 pandemic has certainly been a challenge for both Jeanne and also our current outbound student Katie Doyle. Katie is currently residing in France and as world borders closed she faced a difficult decision regarding continuing her exchange or flying back home. She stayed and we look forward to hearing about her adventures when she joins us back in Australia.

Outbound student Sarah Groom returned home at the beginning of 2020 after spending 12 months in Spain. She overcame many challenges, impressed us with her mastery of the Spanish language during her presentation to our club and we are all very proud of her achievements. Sarah is pictured here receiving her Rotary Youth Exchange Certificate from District Governor Kalma McLelland.
