Future 9th GradersFrequently Asked Questions
• Do you need a language to graduate from Madison Central?
• No. If you plan to attend a four year institution, you need to review the admission requirements of that school. The number of foreign language requirements if any vary depending on the school
How many classes do I need to sign up for next year?
• At least 8 blocks worth of credits.
A. Semester Classes take up one half (semester) or whole (full year) takes the entire year.
B. Half credits (semester credits) need to occur in pairs. I call this the Buddy System. Band is the only exception, see below.
A. Football – meets everyday for one block all year long – 1 credit is earned. As long as students participate in spring training this April, they will be on the 9th grade team. This student should sign up for Football and 6 other credits for a total of 7.
B. Basketball (Girls and Boys), Fast Pitch Softball, and Baseball – meets everyday for one block all year long – 1 credit is earned. Tryouts will be this March-May. If they are NOT playing football, these students should sign up for 8 credits just as though they will NOT make the team. At the bottom of their choice sheet, they should write “If I make basketball, then drop ………”. They should list 2 full year courses or a combination of half credits to drop for Team Sports.

C. Golf, Power lifting and Track – meets everyday for one block during second semester – ½ credit is earned. Tryouts will occur next December.
D. Cheerleading and Dance Team – meets every-other day for one block during first semester - ½ credit earned. Tryouts will occur this spring. They will need to sign up for 8 full credits as though they will NOT make the squad. At the bottom of their choice sheet, they should write “If I make cheerleading, then drop ………”. They should list one semester course such as Contemporary Health for me to take off their first semester schedule next year. They will earn one-half credit for this squad, just like any other semester course. They can earn a maximum of 8.0 credits
What do I do if I want to play
• Soccer – meets every-other-day for one block all year long – 1 credit is earned. Tryouts will occur this spring. They will need to sign up for 8 full credits as though they will NOT make the team. At the bottom of their choice sheet, they should write “If I make soccer, then drop ………”. They should list one year-long or two semester courses for me to take off their schedule next year. They will earn one-whole credit for this squad, just like any other year-long course. They can earn a maximum of 8.0 credits
What do I do if I want to play
• Junior Varsity and Varsity Sports – these are listed on the packet that was distributed with choice sheets. Any of these that occur after school, students do not receive credit for them, except if mentioned above. Students will need to sign up for 8.0 credits. The tryouts are next year, except for Girls’ Volleyball, which will be in April or May. Volleyballers can call the high school and talk with the coach.
What do I do if I want to play • Band – meets every day for one block during first
semester, and every-other-day for one block during second semester – 1 credit is earned. There are no tryouts, students who are in 8th grade band will be allowed to take 9th grade band. Mr. Goff, the high school band director, will discuss with them when they will hold chair auditions. Band students should sign up for 6.5 credits and band. They are the one exception to the pairing of semester credits. Band is 1 credit, so band students have the opportunity to earn 7.5 credits next year.
