Winter has been tough, long and grueling for much of the country. It’s mid-March and I’m still trudging through snow trying to keep from slipping and sliding on the icy patches. It’s no

wonder that I’m dreaming of Spring and riding my bike along Chicago’s lakefront trail.

In this issue we look at two great outdoor activities for couples, biking and hiking. We highlight some great bike tours in both the USA and around the world. We also feature Nicolas and Lucie Garcera, bike tour operators from the Provence area of France. Plus we highlight great hikes for two. Enchanting landscapes, breathtaking views and the joy of spending time together are three great reasons to head outdoors.

There are also many other benefits to biking. Here are 10 good reasons to bike this Spring.

1. You burn calories while enjoying great scenery.

2. It can be done with the entire family.

3. Riding is cheap, fun and exhilarating.

4. You can stop and smell the roses or the sea or whatever nature shares.

5. You’ll make friends with other bikers.

6. It’s easier on your knees than many other sports.

7. Its great cardio and good for your heart, endurance and stamina.

8. It’s good for your spirit and state of mind. You’ll feel happier about yourself and the world.

9. It’s a proven stress reliever.

10. Bike for charity and make a contribution to your favorite cause.

You’ll reap the benefits of better health, peace of mind, increased confidence and joy when you ride. And when couples bike together, they improve their relationship. So whether its close to home on a local trail or on one of our featured rides in the USA or abroad. Get out there and bike.

Ready for a unique weekend getaway that you and your sweetie will remember for years? Leave the car behind and hop on a bike instead! Whether you want to sign up for an organized tour or would rather just mosey along at your own pace, biking is a fun way to explore an area. It gives you the chance to take in the views, sounds, and even tastes around you in a whole new way. With biking trails and tours available from coast to coast,

you and your partner can get in on the fun no matter where you live!

Napa Valley, California

Do you and your partner love wine? If the answer is yes, nothing can beat a wine tasting tour in California’s renowned Napa Valley. Make it a bike tour for a fun experience unlike any other wine tasting tour you’ve ever been on! Guided bike tours allow you to see rolling hills, rows of wine grapes, and all-together beautiful scenery around you. Book a weekend visit, or if you can get away for longer, try a 4-day tour that includes visits to dozens of nearby wineries. If you choose a complete package, you won’t have to worry about a thing, with hotel accommodations, picnic lunches, and personalized night time dining recommendations included.

Zion National Park, Utah

You and your partner will be transported to another world as you bike through Utah’s Zion National Park. Admire incredible geological formations, like the famous Checkerboard Mesa. Enjoy the near solitude of the low-traffic Floor of the Valley Road, which passes by countless cliffs and vibrantly colored walls. Look for the hanging gardens that pierce the orange and brown landscape around you with bright shades of green. As the sky somehow turns bluer and you find yourself alone with your sweetie, you’ll be amazed at the dramatic atmosphere around you. Make Springdale your base, booking a room and making dinner reservations in advance so you can enjoy a romantic night together after your ride.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Casual biking enthusiasts and those with little experience will enjoy the laid back Cape Cod Rail Trail. No tour guide is needed; simply rent or bring your own bikes and set off for your self-guided journey through as much or as little of the 25-mile trail as you and your partner desire. The paved Cape Cod Rail Trail is completely car-free and gives visitors the chance to see a wonderful variety of scenery and natural landscapes. The terrain is flat for the most part, with some minor grades in a few areas. You and your sweetie can even stop for a swim or a casual lakeside picnic. The trail is steadily maintained and in excellent condition, which makes it ideal for those looking for a relatively easy, carefree day of biking in the Cape Cod area. Trail maps, lots of signage, and pavement markings mean even beginners will find their way without any troubles. As you and your partner pass through quaint New England towns, you can stop to peruse antiques, explore art galleries, or eat at one of the charming restaurants. This is the perfect way to spend a low key, low-stress weekend while exploring Cape Cod, one of New England’s treasures.

Chestertown, Maryland

The riverfront village of Chestertown is a lovely spot to relax and explore. The streets are filled with antique galleries, specialty shops, and impressive Colonial homes. After walking around town, you and your partner can hop on your bikes and ride along the beautiful Chester River, either on your own or as part of a tour. You’ll pass through rolling hills and enjoy beautiful countryside scenery, perhaps ending up at one of the area’s many bed & breakfast inns.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville’s Point Lookout Trail opened just over 5 years ago and is a dedicated paved bike greenway. This winding trail challenges bikers to do some climbing, but the incredible mountain views and surrounding greenery make it all worth it. The trail is only 3.6 miles long one way, plus an additional 1/2 mile from the parking area. You can make the trip a bit

longer by coming from the Pisgah Forest picnic area parking, which increases the roundtrip distance to 8 miles. Point Lookout is located just 2 miles up the trail and is the perfect spot to stop and take in the beautiful views. One of the fun parts of the trail is stopping to see old railroad tracks and tunnels through the mountains.

Keuka Outlet Trail, New York

Explore the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes Region on bike and you and your partner will be in for treat. The Keuka Outlet Trail is largely undiscovered, especially compared to the more well-known wine trails and major biking trails throughout the region. Don’t be surprised to find little company on the 7-mile trail from beginning to end, making it the

perfect spot to spend some quality one-on-one time together. A section of the trail follows a stream that connects Keuka and Seneca Lakes, which once had dozens of mills and hydropower dams. As that business came to an end, locks were removed, and natural waterfalls took their place. You may pass by recreational p a d d l e r s enjoying these

waterfalls in their kayaks, as well as lots of wildlife that call this rural area home. Part of the trail passes through a dramatic, steep shale and limestone gorge that was formed during the last ice age. Another large section of the trail runs along farmland and vineyards, so an impromptu wine tasting may make the afternoon even more special. Biking along this beautiful trail is a peaceful and fun activity for any Upstate New York visitor or resident.

Ottauquechee River, Vermont

Vermont is known for its covered bridges, delicious maple syrup, and beautiful forests. A bike tour along the Ottauquechee River gives you the opportunity to experience all of these things for yourself. You can cycle by historical covered bridges (make sure you bring your camera!) and centuries-old forests before recharging your batteries with some maple syrup tastings. Local farms offer artisan cheeses and homemade sweets, while local microbreweries offer tasty craft beers. Visit in the fall to see one of nature’s best shows as the spectacular foliage showcases bright reds, yellows, and oranges.

Walk on the Beach - Despite its name, Myrtle Beach doesn’t have just one beach. This area along the South Carolina Coast is known as the Grand Strand, and visitors can enjoy more than 60 miles of white-sand beaches both north and south of the city itself. Leave the itinerary behind and try beach hopping with your partner as you explore the area. You can drive right along the coast, pulling over in designated public parking areas along the way to find which beach strikes your fancy. Some will have a crowd, but you may just get lucky and find an isolated area perfect for the two of you. Make a day of it by bringing along snacks, beach towels, and beverages. These beaches are known for the incredible sea shells, sharks teeth, and other ocean treasures that wash ashore, so you can make a game out of seeing who discovers the best find of the day.

City Spotlight: Myrtle Beach

Visit an Outdoor Mall - If you and your partner enjoy shopping–even if it’s of the window variety–you will not be disappointed with the huge variety of shops, boutiques, and big-name stores in Myrtle Beach. Thanks to the generally warm and welcoming weather, many of the best shopping locations feature an open air concept. Barefoot Landing is one shopping destinations where you can visit unique local stores and some you’ll recognize while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. A series of bridges allow guests to walk over a lake that runs through the middle of the property. Take your time meandering through the lanes, enjoying the one-of-a-kind stores, watching and feeding the birds and fish, and maybe even sneaking in a game of miniature golf. You can also see an IMAX movie, see tigers up close, or touch an alligator here! With plenty of restaurants to choose from and a busy nightlife vibe, it’s easy to spend the whole day and night here.

Stroll through Outdoor Gardens - Brookgreen Gardens is an impressive property that has incredible walking trails, an active arts education program, a zoo, and expansive sculpture gardens. This non-profit outdoor museum offers concerts, classes, movie screenings, and more, so be sure to check the schedule for any events that may be of particular interest to you and your partner.

Connect with Nature - Myrtle Beach has two state parks that each offer an entirely unique experience to visitors. Visit Huntington Beach State Park and you’ll see a freshwater lagoon, salt marsh, and maritime forest. This park is known for its incredible birding, so bring your binoculars and a camera with a good zoom. The Myrtle Beach State Park also has a beautiful beach, nature trails for walking, and a large pier. If you’d like to try exploring the area in a different way, rent a bike or sign up for horseback riding–both are permitted in the park!

Explore an Old Moorish-Style Estate - Huntington Beach State Park is home to Atalaya, a beautiful home and sculpture studio built during the Great Depression by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The entire property has a mysterious feeling to it that makes it easy to pretend you’ve been transported to another time. Visit during the month of September and you can check out the work of hundreds of local artists during the annual arts and crafts festival.

Have a Night Out on the Town - Myrtle Beach is known for its nightlife and entertainment. Couples who are looking for loud music and a hoppin’ bar scene have lots of places to choose from. For a more intimate affair, find a hidden corner in one of dozens of upscale restaurants in the area. If you’re looking to be entertained, get tickets to one of the variety shows or extravagantly themed productions. From impersonators to magic shows to pirate-themed dinner shows, you can see nearly any type of performance along the Grand Strand. Couples who are looking to get away from the crowds can book a spot on one of the area’s sunset cruises and enjoy the onboard entertainment.

♥ Consider whether there’s a way you can bring your pet with you if you’re taking a road trip for your vacation. There are

some pet-friendly hotels and rentals available that will allow you to bring your dog along, usually for an additional charge. If your pet is OK in new environments and you won’t have to worry about its nervous reaction to a new environment such as soiling carpets and furniture or chewing on items in the room at your destination, this can be a good way to reduce the worry of leaving your pet at home when you travel.

♥ Look around for individuals who offer dog-sitting services. If you’re comfortable providing someone with a key to your home and you have confidence that the person will responsibly live up to your arrangements for walking and feeding your dog, using an individual dog-sitter can be an economical way to leave your pet home alone while you’re away.

♥ If there is a dog-sitting service where you can find a local individual who brings dogs into their home to watch while you’re away, these services can offer a great opportunity for your pet to have an interesting and fun at-home experience while you’re away.

♥ You should try to have your pet visit the location it will be staying at while you travel before you leave it there for the period

of time of your vacation. Familiarity with people and the site itself will help reduce anxiety for your dog.

♥ Always have a document indicating the care your dog will get as well as the person’s ability to take on the responsibility for your dog getting loose or causing damage in the person’s home. If you’re using the services of a neighborhood child who is too young to legally sign such a document, prepare one for the parents to sign.

♥ Make sure a document between you and the person caring for your dog is dated and accurately states price, responsibilities of both parties, contact information and the dates you’ll be away.

♥ If you’re using the boarding services of a pet-boarding business or veterinarian, carefully read through the agreement regarding how frequently your dog will be outside its cage and determine the size of the cage the dog will be kept in. Licenses are increasingly required by counties and cities so that you can look into whether an animal boarding license is required in your city. You should also look at consumer reviews of the boarding site, especially the complaints.

♥ Find out how much it will cost for your pet’s accommodation during your vacation and include that amount in your budget. Whether your dog comes with you or stays somewhere else, your vacation budget must include the cost of taking care of your pet.

5Hike

GreatPlaces for

Couples toHiking is a fantastic activity for couples that will get you up and out of your seats and into nature. Whether you and your partner have only been out on a few dates or have spent many years together, going on a hike is a great way to enjoy each other’s company while exploring the great outdoors. Plus, you’ll be doing something healthy and good for yourselves, too! Get inspired by the beauty of nature on one of these 5 great places across the country where you and your partner can go hiking together:

Highline Trail at Glacier National Park, Montana

The wildlife is one of the biggest draws at Glacier National Park. Visitors are frequently treated to marmot, deer, mountain goat, and big horn sheep viewings. The mountain goats put on quite a show, scaling the nearly vertical walls and hopefully inspiring you and your partner to do the same. The views along the Highline Trail are just remarkable, with cliffs and mountains all around. The hike is best for those with moderate fitness levels, so come prepared to sweat a little while fitting in a workout. Give yourselves the whole day to make the most of your visit, taking lots of protein-filled snacks and water. Those who move at a faster pace should have no problem completing the circuit in just an afternoon.

Gregory Ridge Trail at Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina

One of the beauties of hiking in the Smoky Mountains is the abundance of flowers, and the Gregory Ridge Trail, and specifically the Gregory Bald, do not disappoint when it comes to floral beauty. Throughout spring and summer a number of flowers are consistently in bloom, which means you and your partner will be treated to a variety of shapes, colors, and scents. If you can make it during the month of June, you’ll see the famous azaleas at the summit of the trail at Gregory Bald. Get ready for a sea of azalea, with stunning reds, oranges, pinks, and other colors covering the ground around you. Arriving at the brightly colored Gregory Bald is the perfect payoff for a

When it comes to choosing the right hiking trail with your partner, take the time to

find a place that fits your personalities and athletic level. Without a bit of planning, a hike that’s too difficult or too long can turn from sweet to sour in a matter of minutes! Schedule a hiking trip with your partner and you’ll both feel accomplished and

proud once you’ve completed the journey together.

rigorous hike and the 10-acre meadow is a romantic spot for a picnic for two. Views from the summit showcase Rich Mountain, Clingmans Cove, Fontana Lake, and other natural wonders of the area. Surprise your sweetie by bringing a bottle of wine or champagne to make the moment even more special.

Barnes Creek Trail in Olympic National Park, Washington

The Barnes Creek Trail is a beginner-friendly trail that begins at Lake Crescent within Olympic National Park. Located about 100 miles west of Seattle, it’s the perfect place for urban-dwelling couples to visit for a weekend day trip. Those who love big trees will be fascinated by the giant Douglas firs and cedars, some of them with diameters of 12 feet or more. The Marymere Falls, located less than a mile from the trailhead, are not only beautiful to see, but the lively sound of falling water makes for a great backdrop as you and your partner move onward and upward along the trail.

Runyon Canyon Loop, California

If you and your partner are into movies, try hiking L.A.’s Runyon Canyon Loop to merge your love of cinema and your love of the Great Outdoors. Often referred to as the “Hollywood Hike,” this trail is all about the physical challenge, the location, and the chance for a celebrity sighting. People visit from all over the world while vacationing in Hollywood, taking in the views of multi-million dollar mansions and the Hollywood sign, and, of course, hoping to see a celebrity pass them on the trail. If you are vacationing near L.A., surprise your partner with a trip to the Runyon Canyon Loop so you can see the Hollywood Hills from a whole new angle! As a bonus, dogs are also allowed here, so Fido can come along, too.

Appalachian Trail, Eastern U.S.

No hiking-related list is complete without a mention of the Appalachian Trail, including this one. If you and your partner want the ultimate test of not only physical endurance, but of tolerance, patience, and, ultimately, love, there is none better than planning a hike along the Appalachian Trail. Anyone who is thinking about hiking this legendary trail will need to plan and prepare for months in advance, plus will need to block off a period of up to six months (or even more!) to complete the challenging experience together.

Jacob Hill Inn in Providence, RI

In a corner of the world where bed & breakfasts seem to pop up on every corner, the Jacob Hill Inn stands above the competition in a number of ways. First, the list of awards and accolades it boasts is beyond impressive. Next, its guest registry includes names like the Vanderbilts and goes back to the farm’s construction in 1722. The rooms showcase a beautiful antique and art collection; many of the items carry an equestrian theme. Most rooms have Jacuzzi tubs for two and private fireplaces, so you and your partner could easily stay tucked away in your room during your whole visit. Venture to other areas of the property and you’ll find a billiard room, ping pong table, tennis court, and a large home theater. If you want to expand your horizons, go on a walking tour of Providence and discover the charm of this lovely New England city.

Though this unique inn is located in the heart of Boston, you and your partner will feel like you’ve traveled to another country once you step foot in the Moroccan Luxury Suites. What is most special about the property is the vast collection of artwork, lighting, and furnishings, many of which were handmade in Morocco. Guests have everything they’ll need for a comfortable visit, whether they’re planning on staying in or heading out to explore the city. A king-size feather bed and canopy tent transforms the bedroom into a romantic setting, and even the showers offer an extra luxurious experience with dual overhead and body water streams.

When you think of fantastic honeymoon destinations, plenty of places come to mind...Hawaii, Aruba, and other tropical islands are some of the greatest hot spots to celebrate your recent wedding. But if you’re planning a honeymoon, there’s another name you should add to that list of places to consider: the Maldives. This archipelago lies in the Indian Ocean, and its consistently warm climate guarantees temperatures of

around 86 F year-round. It is a growing honeymoon destination attracting couples from around the world who are aching to visit a faraway place that few people know about or have visited. As tourism to the island nation becomes more popular, the number and variety of activities available for honeymooning couples is also growing. Consider these activities to make a honeymoon in the Maldives everything you dreamed of.

The Maldives

for a Perfect Honeymoon

Seek seclusion on an uninhabited island.

The Maldives consists of a series of more than 1,000 islands. You and your sweetie can book a private boat for the day to visit and explore an uninhabited island where you’ll be the only guests around. Imagine having a whole island to yourselves...to explore, to relax, to do whatever your heart desires! Spend a day in the sea.

Private bungalows offer honeymooning couples direct, private access to the water around them. Though you may just dip your toes in the lovely aquamarine water at first, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to resist its attraction for long. Before you know it, you’ll be snorkeling or just splashing around in the refreshing cool water that is quite literally at your front door. Try your hand at night time fishing.

They say an experience is not about the destination, but rather about the journey. When it comes to night time fishing in the Maldives, that statement holds true. If you sign up for a night time fishing expedition, you and your partner will first enjoy an incredible boat trip and breathtaking sunset before arriving at the ideal fishing spot. Try catching your own dinner and get ready for one of the most memorable meals of your life.

Make the spa come to you.

Your honeymoon should be a time to relax and enjoy each other’s company as husband and wife. To make the experience a little more indulgent, turn your suite into a spa. A pedicure and foot massage will ensure any wedding day stresses are left in the past, while a facial will somehow clear your complexion and your mind simultaneously. Get ready for some luxurious (and much needed!) pampering if you book your honeymoon in the Maldives.

Spend your time underwater.

The Maldives offer incredible SCUBA diving locations that impress even the most experienced and traveled divers. Whether you and your partner are first-time divers or have years of experience, include SCUBA diving in part of your Maldives honeymoon for an experience you will absolutely never forget. The most committed divers can choose a multi-day and night diving package to ensure eclectic and exciting wildlife viewings. Those who have never had the time to take instruction in SCUBA diving can take advantage of the Open Water Course while honeymooning to give themselves a strong foundation for future travel and diving opportunities. Tour the area from the sky.

Expect to take some of the most stunning photographs of your life as you and your new spouse fly above the Maldives’ many incredible islands and sand bars. The natural is mixed with the manmade, creating an elaborate and detailed display of aquamarine waters, white sand beaches, and beautiful resorts. You may even spot sting rays, a school of dolphins, or other tropical habitants below as you pass over dozens, if not hundreds, of the nation’s many islands. Eat food you never even knew existed.

In the island city of Male’, you have your choice of internationally

inspired restaurants. Local cuisine often features fish caught that day, served up seaside as you listen to and watch the ocean’s waves. Endearing little tea shops serve up small finger foods that are sure to delight; the most common are deep fried treats that come in both sweet and savory varieties. Hints of coconut are to be expected, and even if you never considered yourself much of a coconut fan, don’t be surprised to fall in love with the flavors of the islands. Cafes are also very popular and you may choose one that resembles your favorite coffee shop back home or perhaps look for someplace far more exotic, depending on what your tastes are.

1. What inspired you to become a professional cyclist?I’ve been riding since I was 14 years old. My father used to race in Spain when he was younger, for example with Federico Bahamontes, a famous climber who won the Tour de France in 1959. I always dreamed of doing the same. We live in the country of Le Tour de France, we have a lot of beautiful roads and good weather in Provence…so it has always been a real pleasure to go training! I’m a good climber, my record of the Mont Ventoux ascent is 1h04.

2. You have ridden in multiple Tour de France races. What unforgettable scene or experience during the race stands out in your mind?

It’s always a real satisfaction when you reach Paris after long days of competition. Sharing time and racing with riders who come from all over the world is also an exciting experience.

3. You and your wife Lucie started a bicycle tour company. What has been the biggest challenge in moving from rider to entrepreneur? What has been the biggest joy?I have always been both working and riding when I was professional. I’m an engineer designer of the famous school of “Arts et Métiers ParisTech”, and was creating carbon and titanium frames for companies such as Look or NewCycling. What a pleasure it is to design in the

morning, and test your own prototypes when training in the afternoons!

When my career stopped, I created a cycling and sportswear brand, called MT VENTOUX®. That’s when I met Lucie, and maybe this is the biggest joy! A few months later we had the idea of creating this company together.

4. How do you and Lucie share responsibilities?Lucie is from Provence. She loves having a walk in the mountains or the small stoned villages around the Mont Ventoux. She cooks local organic products and knows a lot of craftsmen and farmers. She is a specialist of gastronomy, wines and accommodations.

I’m still riding about 12/15h each week, and know as nobody else our roads (I’ve

I met Nicolas Garcera at a travel agent invitation-only event showcasing the Provence area of France. It was sponsored by the Provence region tourism boards and Atout France. Nicolas’ presentation on the unique biking opportunity suggested that rare combination of leisure and excitement. The striking landscapes of sea, mountains and vineyards is a harmonious

blend of natural beauty. Provence is a perfect destination for a romantic getaway. It is also a spectacular place for a biking adventure that mixes the joy of great food, award winning wines and a bike route that communes with nature.

In this interview Nicolas shares insights in both his biking and bike tour operator experiences.

ridden about 150,000 miles in Provence).

Lucie and my skills really fit together! That’s why we do not just propose biking in Provence, but a real experience with us, sharing our passion and our knowledge.

5. What services does your company offer? We offer two kinds of tours :

- One is composed of bike and activities each day, such as visiting the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Luberon Valley at Gordes, Les baux de Provence, the Mont Ventoux, cooking courses, wine tasting, gastro diner experience, private aperitive at sunset at the summit of the Mont Ventoux….our guests can choose between 14 different activities regarding their interest and the season. All bike levels are available.

- One is a special Granfondo Tour, for more serious cyclists. In this tour our guest will have a special trainer, interpreter, massages…they also will run a Granfondo in France with all our assistance. And do you know what? Lucie is also riding ! And we also recommend special women Tours!

6. Your tours take place in the The Provence area of France. What makes this area special for bike tours? The area of Provence is really a “must” in France ! The weather is very often

good, we’ve got plenty of nice small roads without cars, a lot of small climbs, very beautiful landscapes in the middle of the lavenders, the vineyards… and don’t forget the famous Mont Ventoux, a legend of the Tour de France !

7. One of the special tours you offer is, Train in France like a Pro. What’s the goal of the tour?As I said before, in this tour all is done to provide our guests a unique experience. France is the country of the Tour de France and that’s where the story of the cyclism was born. The goal of those taking the Granfondo tours is to run a Granfondo in France, on the same roads as the Tour de France. They also have the opportunity to spend a whole day with a pro cyclist and receive tips and advice; the same is done with training advice from qualified trainers and dietitians…the guests will live a real experience as if they were professionals! The days after the race are days “off”, and we share fun times in Provence, with various activities.

8. Give me 3 reasons why my readers should book a bike tour with Mt Ventoux?Lucie and I are homegrown and have always lived in Provence. Our company is unique in this area, with extensive knowledge and expertise. We are specialists, not generalists.

We work as a couple and we love sharing our passion. That’s why we do not accept big groups but private or small tours, in order to spend time and take care with our guests in Provence.
