What a year! As we wind down another exceptional school year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents, guardians, and community leaders for the support you have given the students, faculty, and staff at Forest Hill Elementary School. We appreciate you! Teacher Appreciation Week was great! Thanks to the committee members and all who contributed. You made sure our teachers and staff felt valued. Congratulations to our Most Improved Student, Aldan Richardson. Aldan is a second grade student who has shown genuine dedication to becoming the best student possible. He was recognized Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Most Improved Student Awards ceremony at Southwood High School. We are proud of Aldan. We also congratulate Johnson’s Jungle the fourth grade class of Mrs. Kimberly Johnson. For the first time in Accelerated Reader history at Forest Hill, 100% of the students in the class earned their points with at least 80% accuracy. What an incredible feat! Three other classes had 95% of their students earn their points with the appropriate percentage. Kudos to the following classes: Meaux’s Mighty Tigers, Knoebel’s Nobel Knights, Pierce’s Pod. About 60 third and fourth grade students participated in the LEAP Squad after school program. These students went the extra mile, staying after school to complete an additional 20 hours of reading and mathematics instruction. They could not have done it without the help of the teachers and staff who volunteered to teach: Marilyn Austin, Deandria Burris, Sonya Gipson, Jessica Miller, Leah McCall, Kristen Meaux, Shelby Pennell, Beth Pierce, Jacklyn Smith, Jacklyn Whittington, Denisha Winston. I came across this poem one day and thought that I would share it with you. You see, each student here at Forest Hill is

indeed special to us. We are so thankful that you have chosen our school to help educate your child. Please share this poem with

your child. Talk with them about how special they are! They truly are a gift!

I'm Special

I'm special.

In all the world there's nobody like me.

Since the beginning of time, there has never been another person like me.

Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair, my hands, my voice.

I'm special.

No one can be found who has my handwriting.

Nobody anywhere has my tastes for food or music or art. No one else sees things

just as I do.

In all of time there's been no one who laughs like me, no one who cries like me, and

what makes me laugh and cry will never provoke identical laughter and tears from

anybody else, ever.

No one reacts to any situation just as I would react.

I'm special.

I'm the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities. Oh, there will always be

somebody who is better at one of the things I'm good at, but no one in the universe

can reach the quality of my combinations of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings. Like

a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone, but none can match the

symphony sound when all are played together. I'm a symphony. Through all of

eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think, or do like me.

I'm special.

I'm rare.

And, in all rarity there is great value. Because of my great value, I need not attempt

to imitate others. I will accept -- yes, celebrate -- my differences.

I'm special.

And I'm beginning to realize it's no accident that I'm special.

I'm beginning I am made special for a very special purpose. For I must have a job for

me that no one else can do as well as I. Out of all the billions of applicants, only one is

qualified, only one has the right combination of what it takes.

That one is me.

Because ... I'm special!

Hello Broncos!

Spring has sprung! We are preparing for state testing which will be April 25-29. Here

are a few testing tips that you can do at home to help your child be prepared for

testing week:

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and goes to bed on time each night.

Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast each morning of testing.

Send your child to school in comfortable clothes.

Make sure your child gets to school on time.

Discuss the importance of testing with your child. Allow them to express their

thoughts about testing and try to help ease any anxiety they may feel.

As summer approaches, take some time to keep reading. Allow students to use a simple “five finger rule” to determine if a book is the right reading level. Ask a child to read aloud a page from a book. Every time he stumbles or skips a word,

have him put down a finger. If all of a child’s fingers are down by the end of the page, the book is probably too difficult. Also, please visit these sites for some awesome

stories online!

It is hard to believe how fast time has gone by. It seems like yesterday

that the children were just starting PreK and learning the rules and

routines. April has arrived along with the 4th nine week period. Can you

believe it, you will soon have a Kindergartner? During the month of April

(specifically April 15) we will have PreK and Kindergarten Round Up. Since

your child attends PreK he or she is automatically enrolled in Kindergarten

so you do not have to attend PreK/Kindergarten Round Up and fill out the

paperwork. You only need to attend if your child has a younger sibling who

is eligible to enroll in PreK. If you have friends, neighbors, or church

members who live in Forest Hill's district and have a child who will be 4 by

September 30, 2016, please inform them that we will be having Round Up.

We have 40 spots to fill and everyone who lives in our district is strongly

encouraged to apply. Some of the requirements to register have changed

from last year.

Save the dates:

April April 27- fire station and park

April 29- Dixie Farms

May

May 5- Library field trip May 5: Kindergarten Transition Meeting at 5:30

(come to this meeting to learn what is expected of your child in Kindergarten) May 13: Field Day (PreK classes compete against each other) May 18: PreK Celebration - Come help us celebrate the end of the school year!

Please remember to check your child's folder daily so

that you do not miss any other important dates

that may be added as the year winds down.

Where has the time gone? Can you believe we are counting down our last nine weeks of school? What an awesome school year we have had! We have had successful celebrations which include: Mardi Gras/Taste of Louisiana, 100th Day

of Kindergarten, Read Across America/Dr. Seuss Day, and the Easter Egg Hunt. We want to express our sincerest gratitude to all of the parents who volunteered their time and effort to ensure that our little ones had a great time. We also want to extend our deepest, most heartfelt thank you for all of the kind words, cards, notes, and gifts you

gave to us for teacher’s appreciation week. “KINDERGARTEN ROCKS”!

As we approach the end of our kindergarten school year, we continue to focus on reading, writing and math. With regular practice, children develop fluency in these areas and will learn to think more deeply.

In the areas of reading and writing, they will: Adapt their reading to different types of reading materials, recognize many words, know how to make sense

of words and try reading new things.

Write simple sentences by using real letters, spaces between words and some punctuation. Become aware that media are used for different purposes- for example, to educate, to convey a message or to

sell something.

In the area of mathematics, they will focus primarily on two areas. The first is learning numbers and what they represent. The second is addition and subtraction. They will:

Count how many objects and compare quantities of two groups. Compare numbers to identify which is greater or less. Understand addition as putting together and subtraction as taking away. Add and subtract very small numbers quickly and accurately. Break up numbers less than or equal to 10 in more than one way.

Please continue to partner with your child’s teacher. Don’t be afraid to reach out. You are important to your child’s education. We also ask that you adhere to the following reminders:

Arrival to School: Students who enter the classroom after 7:55 are missing valuable individualized instructional time. Homework: Students lead by example. Make homework a priority. Sit with the student and encourage them to do

their best on all assigned work. Speak positively about school and homework letting the child know that you value their learning experience.

Daily Folders/Binders: Check folders/binders daily for information and notes. Take a few minutes daily and review the supplemental pages that teachers have placed in the binders or folders.

Dear First Grade Families,

The end of the year will be here before we know it and your children have learned so much this year! We will be wrapping up the year, strengthening skills we have learned and continuing to prepare the children for Second Grade. We suggest keeping up the reading, practicing spelling, and sentence writing. Also, review math facts, both addition and subtraction, will help contribute to their readiness for next year!

The First Grade team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and participation in your child’s education. This has been a wonderful year which allowed them to learn new skills and gain confidence in their ability to perform at their highest abilities. What a great year it has been! We cannot wait to hear about their progress next year.

Best Wishes!

Second Grade Scoop

Second grade is springing into spring! We have many exciting events planned for April and May. We will be going to the Summer Reading Festival at the Shreveport Convention Center on April 18th. This festival helps get the kids pepped up for summer reading! Your child can check out books on their electronic devices on the Shreve Memorial website using their library cards. Check out the link below for more information. On April 27th, we will also be visiting Walter B. Jacobs Nature Center. Our visit to the nature center will reinforce many topics that we have learned throughout the year in Science. We are also planning a trip to the Disney Nature movie with the money we raised through our bake sale. More information about the movie will be coming home soon. As we wrap up the school year, please make sure that you continue to work with your child at home to keep them prepared for the next school year. GREAT summer skills to help prepare for THIRD grade are: subtraction/addition with regrouping, money/time, fractions and multiplication facts. In addition, make sure that your child READS, READS, READS! Students should also practice WRITING about what they have read. They can write paragraphs comparing stories that they’ve read. Please check that they have capital letters, correct punctuation, and that their sentences make sense.

It has been a SUPER year! We look forward to the future successes of our 2nd grade SUPER KIDS!!!

HAVE a WONDERFUL and SAFE SUMMER!

Third Grade Rocks!!!

Wow! Can you believe we are almost finished with the school year? Third Graders have been working extra hard to prepare for the LEAP test. Students are citing text evidence, explaining their math responses, and writing well written compositions. Also, they are learning their multiplication facts. We are very proud of each and every one of them and know they will blow the top off the test! Along with the LEAP preparation, we have also been studying components of the environment, weather climates, branches of government, and symbols of Louisiana. As the year comes to an end, please encourage your child to continue to do his/her homework, read every night, study his/her facts, and do his/her best at everything that is placed in front of him/her. A few dates to remember are May 13th Field Day at Forest Hill and class parties will be held on May 20th. There will be more information coming soon. Third Grade Teachers Mrs. Smith, Ms. Whittington, & Ms. Cook

Running Club

Running Club is right on track, walking and running to get exercise while enjoying the beautiful sunshine. It has been a great year! We can’t wait to announce the top participants

during the Awards Ceremony at the end of the school year. We plan to meet every Tuesday until May 3rd.

Please remember to wear your tennis shoes and bring a bottle of water. See you on the field!

Fourth Grade News

The school year has gone by so quickly. As this is being written, there are only six weeks of school remaining. Your students are working every day to prepare for the LEAP 2016 ELA, Math, and Science

test to be given the week of April 25th. Please share these test taking tips with your students.

We are so appreciative of the parents who have sent supplies throughout the year. We are always in need of more pencils, Kleenex, copy paper, and candy for treats. Thank you in advance for your support. This nine week period your student will need to earn 14 Accelerated Reader points and maintain an 80% accuracy level in order to meet his/her goal. Please encourage your child to select chapter books on their level. It is important for students to build their stamina when reading. In math, students will be learning how to find the perimeter and area of a given figure. Upon completion of Chapter 13, our focus will turn to preparing your student for the 5th grade. GO Math! has a built-in unit to address skills needed to prepare them for this transition. We can’t wait to see what your students will create for their ecosystem projects. Be looking for information in their Tuesday folders. In ELA, we are still using the Wonders series to address reading and grammar skills. We are also utilizing test prep materials from the Louisiana Department of Education website, louisianabelieves.com. On this website you can also find a family support toolbox. In Social Studies, we will be discussing Westward Expansion, the Industrial Revolution, and Economics. Please continue to ensure that your student is completing homework each night and showing you his/her Tuesday folder. Your support is always appreciated. We are so proud of how far your children have come this school year. They have shown growth both academically and socially. Even though the end is near, we will remain focused on teaching and learning until the final bell rings this school year. As always, please call us with any questions or concerns. We are here for your children.

We all appreciated the delicious meals and thoughtful gifts we received throughout the week! Fifth grade students have several upcoming activities. We are looking forward to our bake sale on April 22 that will help fund our special day for fifth graders at the end of the year. We would like all fifth graders to donate a box of wrapped snacks by April 18th. Money donations for t-shirts are also being requested and accepted. Fifth grade students will partake in The Annual Fit for Life Dare Day that will be held Wednesday, May 4th at the

Independence Stadium. Parents and guardians should be looking for a permission slip soon.

The LEAP test is fast approaching. Fifth grade students need to stay focused, complete homework, read daily, and get plenty of rest each night. Testing will begin April 25, 2016. The AR goal for the 4th nine weeks will be 18 points. "

DISCOVERIES UNLIMITED “THERE’S NO LIMIT TO HOW MUCH WE LEARN”

First Graders Congratulations to our 1st grade Discoveries Unlimited students. These gifted learners were tested in January. They are now a part of a program that encourages the use of fluency, flexibility and originality in producing ideas. In Discoveries Unlimited, children are involved in in-depth learning experiences related to self-directed topics. Welcome to Discoveries Unlimited: Miyah Matheny, Jamoriea Smith, Shaila Brown, Cayden Brammer, Kendall West and Roger Moore.

Discoveries Field Trip Discoveries Unlimited students in grades 2-5 went on a fabulous field trip to Dallas, Texas! Thank you to all of the bake

sale supporters and awesome parents that helped to make this elaborate adventure a success. Thanks to all of you, students were able to travel in style on luxury charted buses. The buses were beautiful with the added addition of

televisions! We traveled to the Rainforest Café in Grapevine Mills. Students had an educational tour and class before their delicious lunch. After eating lunch, we had thought provoking classes at the Dallas Zoo. In addition to our educational

journey, we also went to the Children’s Aquarium. Children were engaged in exciting class rotations. The classes included hands on learning experiences in which students gained a plethora of knowledge. We stopped for dinner and safely

arrived back in Shreveport. I want to send a special shout out to some lovely teachers that assisted us in a great way. Thank you to our Forest Hill teacher chaperones: Mrs. J. Smith, Ms. Whittington, Mrs. Burris, Mrs. Pierce,

Ms. Gipson and Ms. Miller. The students and I are grateful for your time and energy.

Rainforest Projects and Alternative Project Ideas (Student Choice)

Yes, it’s project time!! Although gifted students almost 100% prefer to ‘do-their-own-thing rather than a teacher-driven activity or unit, they often get stymied when told they have to do an independent project. So, I’ve compiled a list of fun,

gifted and talented project ideas for students to choose from. All of these project ideas have already been sent home with students. Student presentations will be scored using the Discoveries Unlimited Evaluation Rubric. Presentations are due

the week of April 18, 2016. Mrs. Mackey

We are so excited to have author/illustrator Kirk Scroggs coming to Forest Hill on Friday, April 22nd. He will be speaking to our second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students that afternoon about his work on Snoop Troop and other fascinating titles. We are in for a treat and are fortunate to have this famous person visiting our school. He is in Shreveport as part of Art Break/Summer Reading Festival and will be sharing at the events at the Convention Center April 23-24. There will be many fun activities for your family to participate in during that weekend. What an exciting time of year in music class! 2016 has been awesome so far with great programs by the second graders as well as the first graders! We still have the fifth grade program to look forward to on May 10

th. They are performing Annie Kids! Parents should have received

two letters by now to allow your child to participate in this program as well as costume information. I am hoping to have as many students as possible participate in this great production! We are still in full swing in music class. Pre-Kindergarteners are learning the basics of music such as basic simple songs, echo songs, and keeping a steady beat. Kindergarteners have mastered how to keep a steady beat and are now working on more complex concepts such as the same and differences in music and proper singing. First graders are learning how to read music, so it is an exciting time in first grade! We have learned about the difference between steady beat and a quarter and eighth notes, and now we are learning about quarter rests (silences) in music. Second graders are reviewing concepts they learned in first grade about reading music, and are adding to their knowledge by learning how to read music on the staff and solfege. We just added a new solfege note in a previous lesson, and that was very exciting! Third graders have explored music from different cultures throughout the year and are working on expanding their musical vocabulary through the use of Italian music terms such as tempo and dynamics. Fourth graders have been studying various forms in music, such as ABA and rondo form. We have used various mediums to discover these forms, such as scarves and ribbon wands. It has been a blast! Last but not least, fifth graders have been doing a unit on different genres of music: blues, jazz, and soul music. We have been listening and reading these genres, as well as singing and discussing the themes and musical themes used in these pieces. We are currently working on the fifth grade play, and we know it will be a huge success! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions,

comments, or concerns regarding your child. My email is

Don’t forget to keep singing!

Art Happy Spring to everyone! We don't have many more days of school left this year so we've been wrapping up learning about some famous local artists such as Clementine Hunter and George Rodrigue. The students have really put forth their best efforts in creating look alike prints of these artists and having fun at the same time.

Don't forget about Artbreak which kicks off on April 18 and continues through the 24th. Please make an effort to attend sometime during this time. You will be most surprised at some of the art you will see from students in Caddo and Bossier and it's FREE to attend.

Forest Hill had five students who placed in the Character Education contest and received trophies or medals. Congratulations to: Bobby Wright - kindergarten, Johnson Chen - 2nd grade, Kentoria Watson - 3rd grade, Aubrey Teeters - 4th grade, Emily Dowings - 5th grade. We are so proud of these students!

Science Lab We have been working hard with hands-on-activities to help 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders do well on their iLEAP and LEAP tests. 2nd grade has also been working hard learning about the world they live in and how things work. For the 4th nine weeks, we will focus on skills that the students will need to improve their science grades in their homeroom. I work very closely with their teachers to ensure that lessons enrich what is being taught. We will be learning new terms and concepts about science to be carried over into their real-world experiences. After testing, we will be doing science fair activities in the science lab. This last nine weeks will be filled with fun, hands-on-activities. I hope this will help them in their everyday life and the upcoming school year.

Thanks from your Science Lab Teacher, Ms. Jackson

PTA President’s Message Brenda Kimmey

As this year is coming to an end, I would like to say thank you to everyone who joined the Forest Hill PTA, volunteered their time, and participated in our fundraisers. With your support we were a successful PTA.

As your outgoing Forest Hill PTA President, I would also like to say thank you to Mrs. Douglas for allowing me to be a part of the Forest Hill family and for her belief in the vision of PTA. I would like to say a huge

thank you to those of you that have served with me on the PTA Board. Your hard work and dedication really proves that this school is "A Neighborhood School with a Heart." The past three years serving as your PTA President have been amazing. I have learned a lot in this role and my hope is that I have made a positive

impact on the lives of our Forest Hill students and teachers.

Group Activities

Members of the 2015-2016 Forest Hill Cheer Team practice every Wednesday until 4:15. They work on perfecting the cheer voice (loud and firm), sharp movements (no noodle arms!), and are learning how to work as a team to deliver a great performance. In February, members hand-crafted Valentines and delivered them the following Saturday to the residents of Garden Park Nursing Home. The Valentines and chocolate were accompanied by hugs and were met with many smiles. Not only are these girls learning the ins and outs of the sport of cheer, but they are cultivating a heart of service.

Our team has been in collaboration with Morgan Clawson, the Captain Shreve Varsity Cheer Coach, and the members of the Gator cheer team on a few occasions this spring. On February 9th, the Bronco cheerleaders were invited to cheer at the Captain Shreve boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Evangel! Our 4th and 5th graders took to the sidelines with the high schoolers (also green and gold!) to cheer the Gator girls to victory! It was a heated game and our Bronco cheerleaders did an awesome job. They were so excited to learn some of the high school cheers, and even taught those varsity cheerleaders some of our own cheers and chants!

On March 17th, the girls performed at the Gators for Good Carnival, a yearly fundraiser benefitting a member of the community in need. Afterward, they enjoyed playing on the inflatable obstacle course and having their hair sprayed different colors. Who knew making a difference could be so FUN?!

The cheerleaders are set to welcome a real-life author on April 22nd, welcoming him with a custom cheer designed just for him! They will also be featured during the LEAP test pep rally to be held the same week!
