Dear Artists: I look forward to our workshop. Below is a SUGGESTED list of supplies. Hopefully you already have supplies that are the same or comparable. Please call me with questions - (386)441-4930 (cell: 386-451-8441) or E-Mail: janet@watercolorsbyrogers.com WATERCOLOR PAPERS: I suggest 140lb Coldpressed or Rough- Strongly suggest Arches Brand – I use Bright White. It will be helpful to have extra watercolor paper (could be backs of old paintings, etc.- but still prefer Arches) for painting exercises. Of course, you will also need a board to support your painting. We do many paintings, so please bring enough watercolor paper (approx. 2 to 5 paintings per day – can be ½ sheets). OTHER PAPERS: A pad of cheap drawing paper will be needed in any portrait or figure workshop. PENCILS: I suggest a #2B pencil for drawing on the watercolor paper, but really love the ebony pencils (or 6B) for drawing exercises. A kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener will be handy. PALETTE: I use various palettes, such as “Jones Palette”, “Cheap Joe’s ”, “John Pike”, etc. – I also use extra trays (such as Jasper trays or other) to make more “puddles”. Palettes should have individual wells plus area for mixing. OTHER STUFF: Hair dryer (we can share), large container for water (I use a bucket), paper towels (I love Bounty). At the start of the class, we will work from photos. Please bring photos of people to work from (can be friends, family, someone who interests you or even from magazines – since this is for practice) ones with good lights and darks (shadow shapes). Ideally shadow shapes should be more than ½ of face. (Please see my website for sample). I will also have some photos if you don’t have any you like. I will also have some drawing aids for beginners…Many students will be interested in painting children, which we will also cover. We will have models later in the week for at least part of one or two days, so bring a CAMERA- you are welcome to take photos of any paintings and demos. You may want to bring a “pre-drawn” drawing on wc paper for your portrait– but we will also do drawings in class – it just may be “reassuring” if you are new to portraits. Also you may want to bring tracing paper to trace your own drawing again to have for practicing flesh tones (or you can use one of mine). BRUSHES: I like the following: A ¾” “Flat” brush such as Loew-Cornell Series 7550 Wash, a “One Stroke" such as the 1” Loew-Cornell Series 7100; "Round" such as Loew-Cornell Series 7700 size 26, and Loew-Cornell Series 7000 size 14; "Ultra Round", Loew-Cornell Series 7020 size 14; a large flat for larger washes, and a 1/2" flat for making "puddles". I use these brushes, but bring what you have. In the workshop you may try mine to see if you like them before you buy them. WATERCOLOR PAINTS: I am listing the colors I use the most, but not all of them. Again, don't feel you have to have everything –bring what you have. I bring extra paints so you try a squeeze of a new color. If I have a preference for the brand, I list it. ---PAGE 2--- We will have models for later on in the week, but for the beginning of the workshop we will be working from photograph to give us time to relax, understand the construction of the head, learn to see, (through some fun drawing exercises), and learn how to apply unique color applications for flesh tones, hair, clothing, background, etc. in a fluid and intuitive manner. These exercises are crucial (and fun) in building skills to interpret the head and figure in a spontaneous way. Some of the items to bring and think about: Photos of people-can be relatives or friends or someone you do not know (that makes it less threatening and lessens the pressure on a likeness or trying to “please” someone), however I know most folks do want to bring a photo of someone you are interested in. I will also have extra photos, but if you bring your own, you will probably be happier. I will also have some drawings and photos you can trace and work from (also mean to be a “security blanket”). Some folks are new to this, so just relax and use mine, with the drawings you can trace if you wish. If you have your own photos, you can come to the workshop with one –( or more) -drawn on watercolor paper (prefer they be on rougher side of 140lb Arches Cold Pressed or on140lb Arches Rough – either side of the Rough -). I do like the Arches Bright White color, but natural is just fine, not that much difference. You can also do a few drawings on drawing paper and later trace them onto the watercolor paper at the workshop to speed up the painting exercises. Of course, some artists like to just draw right on the wc paper instead of tracing (or just paint without drawing), whichever you prefer. You may just want to wait until the workshop because you will probably get “looser”. My goal is to enable students to build skills and gain confidence in approaching portraits and figures. They are fun and exciting in their interpretations and want everyone to enjoy the process, no matter what their level of experience. Many students come into the workshop a little apprehensive and leave absolutely loving the process of this spontaneous and fun approach. So remember – NO FEAR…FUN!! BOTTOM LINE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COME WITH PRE-DRAWN PORTRAITS ON WC PAPER – but you can, we will take some time in class to do this also. It just makes you more relaxed if you have it ahead of time. I can also help with drawings if you need. ABOUT THE PHOTOS-prefer that approximately ½ to ¾ of the face in shadow, a large shadow shape (squinting will help to see it) will make a dynamic painting and easier to simplify and also to leave white paper in the process. Look on my website for a sample photo (you may use it if you wish) it is found on my website under Workshops, then supply lists (on my part of website). If you don’t have shadows, bring anyway we can work it out. The same applies to figures, you can bring any photos of people doing things or partial figures, children can be included in all this if you would like to paint children (we will cover them also). I would prefer shadow shapes on figures, but if you don’t have it bring anyway. As I said, I will bring a few extra photos if you do not have any. Remember photos from magazines or public places are fine for the workshop because we are just learning. PLEASE CALL ME IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. PREPARATORY OPTIONS; Obviously drawing warmups are really helpful for the workshop, but not absolutely critical. I will show you some exercises in “seeing” to help in this process, so I do not want you to stress over this. Some helpful drawing books: “The Natural Way to Draw” by Kimon Nicolaides (you will not have enough time to do all his exercises but they are good to think about); “Drawing the Head and Figure” by Jack Hamm – this is not an “artsy” book but chock full of helpful information in drawing heads and figures and understanding construction. Like I said…..we will have a model for part of two days, so please bring a camera and a drawing pad. If you have an I-Pad, that might be helpful. And you will want to take home some photos to work on after the workshop too. I will bring extra brushes to borrow and a few extra colors to try if you do not have them. LIMITED LIST OF WATERCOLORS--You can get by on these These colors are all mostly transparent and do well in mixing other colors. This list is to help students who do not have access to all the colors I use. PLEASE NOTE: there are six colors in bold…..these are the strongest recommended!
