Crystal Quest 2014 Fight & Flight to FreedomDid you know? The 800th anniversary of the first step to our modern democracies is in 2015. In 1215, English Barons marched on London with the support of Scottish and French troops, forcing King John to sign the Magna Carta ~ The first charter of civil liberties. Did you know? In the 14th &15th Centuries, Nationalism grew through in Scotland and France with battles led by commoners against the ruling English Monarchy. William Wallace in Scotland and Joan of Arc in France both became folk heroes and early symbols of nationalism and liberty. Did you know? In the 16th & 17th Century, the House of Medici (who began as doctors) pioneered modern finance, ignited the European Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. They became French Royalty in 1600 when Marie De Medici married King Henry IV. The future King of England, Prince William, is from the House of Medici via his mother, Princess Diana, a direct descendent of Marie De Medici. Did you know? The 18th & 19th Centuries saw the birth of our modern democracies, first with the English Civil War, French Revolution and execution of their Kings. Then the Spring of Nations in 1848 with revolutions all over Europe. Republics were created, under Oliver Cromwell in England and Scotland, and Napoleon Bonaparte in France. This led to our modern democracies, less than 200 years ago. Did you know? The French symbol of liberty, the Statue of Liberty, was designed after the Collosus of Rhodes, which was a huge statue of the Greek Sun God, Helios, holding a torch and serving as a lighthouse. The Statue of Liberty was built by Gustave Eiffel (who also built the Eiffel Tower). It was the worlds first crowdfunding project. 120,000 Americans raised $100,000 to build it.
