THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN STORY

We’re about to turn 30 years old and it feels great. No middle-age anxiety, just excitement about reaching our glory years. We’re older, we’re wiser, and we’ve never made better bikes than right now. Not bad for a little bike company born in the basement of a Vancouver BC bike shop, eh?

Since we started way back then, Rocky Mountain has developed a reputation for quality and innovation. We’re proud of our work and our customers are proud to own the bikes we make.

In 1981, employees at that Vancouver bike shop where Rocky Mountain was born realized there was a huge demand for high quality mountain bikes. They began importing m ountain bike frames from California to sell to their customers. To meet the exploding demand, the formed Rocky Mountain Bicycles and began importing and manufacturing frames to their exact specifications. The early years of Rocky Mountain served as an incubator for the west coast mountain bike industry, with a handful of employees branching off to start several internationally successful bike companies.

We’ve come a long way since our modest beginning, but our core values have never changed. These values are the reason Rocky Mountain bicycles are as sought after today as they were in 1981.

OUR BIKES ARE APPROVED BY THE BEST ATHLETES IN THE HARSHEST CONDITIONS.

At Rocky Mountain we ride and test our bikes in the harshest conditions imaginable. It is these conditions that have spawned the bicycles in our line up. British Columbia has the most diverse riding conditions in the world. In four hours one can go from the temperate rain forest of the coast, crossing huge mountains and glacial fed rivers to the interior desert. The riding possibilities here are endless; long climbs, fast fire road descents, twisty singletrack, technical rock and root sections, log rides and big drops. The terrain is demanding at the best of times, mind boggling and truly scary at the worst. It is the desire to ride this terrain that has fuelled our passion to build bikes. It is this terrain that has inspired our innovation, to create and build the best product possible.

In addition to demanding terrain, we work with the most demanding athletes to develop our bikes. There is a rich tradition of world-class riders who have ridden Rocky Mountain bikes to victory and in the case of our freeriders, to our amazement.

Since the early 1990’s we have been at the forefront of cross-country racing with pioneer riders like Alison Sydor, Andreas Hestler, Chrissy Redden, and Bruce Spicer. Most recently, Rocky Mountain has won XC World Cups by both Geoff Kabush and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Marie-Helene Premont. Rocky Mountain has dominated mountain bike stage racing for the past decade with riders such as Lesley Tomlinson, Andreas Hestler, Alison Sydor, Pia Sundstedt, Carsten Bresser and Karl Platt. We’ve won every major stage race in the world.

In 2010, Sabrina Jonnier is poised to capture her second World Cup overall title in two years, having piloted her Flatline WC to eight World Cup wins. Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain was the only World Cup team to win both XC and DH World Cups in the last two years.

Our athletes were the first true freeriders. Our legendary Frorider team of Wade Simmons, Richie Schley, and Brett Tippie changed the sport forever with their new and mind blowing riding style and in a tribute to that influence, we’re proud to announce their induction into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2010! We continue to push the limits of gravity riding with new talent, but remain extremely fortunate to have icons like Wade and Brett riding and helping us develop our bikes.

From pioneering the sport to winning races, Rocky Mountain Bicycles has a lot to celebrate from the past 30 years. Most important to us are not the awards or accolades, however, but the thousands of happy riders that we’ve created over the years.

PURE RACE TECHNOLOGY.

Racing has evolved considerably over the years. While some racers want pure World Cup

performance, others want a bike that can tackle gnarly all-day epic racing. Element RSL

(98mm) and Element MSL (120mm) share DNA, but their geometry and spec reflect their

intended use: RSL has more aggressive race oriented geometry and MSL has slightly relaxed

angles for those all-day epic adventures. Using Rocky Mountain’s proprietary technologies

like ABC™ pivots and SmoothWall™ carbon construction, Element RSL and MSL represent

the pinnacle of mountain bike technology.

LIGHT AND STIff Not only 678 grams lighter than its prdecessor, Element RSL also leads the industry in weight and stiffness. Total frame weight with shock is 1,960 grams with a 52% increase in stiffness to weight.

SmOOTHLINK™ SUSPENSIONOur proven and patented SmoothLink™ suspension system sets the standard for pedaling efficiency.

ABC™ PIVOTS – Our patent pending Angular Bushing Concept™ pivots are 20 grams lighter (per pivot) and 105% stiffer than sealed cartridge bearings. They’re more durable too.

fULL CARBON CONSTRUCTIONAlmost everything is constructed from carbon, just 3 grams of aluminum in the upper shock mount. Element RSL and MSL feature our SmoothWallTM carbon construction, resulting in a perfectly smooth interior surface with no stress risers or excess material.

BB-92Allows for a larger bottom bracket/down tube junction, which increases lateral stiffness without compromising weight.

E-TYPE fRONT DERAILLEURBy using the E-type front derailleur standard, we created the absolute lightest and stiffest swingarm configuration.

TWO CHAIN SUCK PLATESSince carbon fiber and bicycle chains don’t get along well, we integrated two chain suck plates into the frame; one molded into the chainstay and one at the bottom of the down tube.

TITANIUm HARDWARE ON RSL Because every gram counts.

INTEGRATED SAG INDICATOR A simple glance at the upper rocker pivot will let you know if you’re set up properly.

SLAYER 70

MOUNTAIN

The 2011 Slayer stays true to its do-it-all roots, and by using new technologies,

we’ve created a bike that caters precisely to the needs of the all mountain ripper.

From enduro downhill races to all-day backcountry missions, this bike slays it all. Never has

a bike with this much travel climbed so well and never has such an efficient climbing bike

descended so well. Thanks to Slayer’s StraightUp™ geometry featuring its 75 degree seat

angle, the rider is always in the perfect pedaling position for maximum power on the climbs.

With 165mm of patented SmoothLink™ suspension travel and 66.5 degree head tube angle,

nothing stands in Slayer’s way when pointed downhill.

STRAIGHT-UP GEOmETRYNever has an all-mountain bike climbed this well thanks to Slayer’s 75 degree seat tube angle.

SmOOTHLINK™ SUSPENSIONOur proven and patented SmoothLink™ suspension system sets the standard for pedaling efficiency.

KEYED AND COUNTERSUNK ONE TOOL HARDWARE No more need for two tools to tighten one pivot. Note: Just because the hardware looks like jewelry doesn’t mean a pawn shop will give you much for it.

E-TYPE fRONT DERAILLEURBy using an E-Type front derailleur mounted on the chainstay, we were able to produce the lightest and stiffest chainstay possible. By reducing the size of the envelope the chain moves in, the E-type system provides more accurate shifting performance. Mounted on the front derailleur is a custom anti chain drop plate which makes a jammed chain a thing of the past.

“GRANNY SANDWICH”A circular plate mounted on the ISCG tab acts as a second line of defense from dropping your chain.

NEW 3 PIECE CHAINSTAY YOKE50 gram weight savings with no decrease in stiffness.

ADjUSTABLE HEIGHT SEATPOST CABLE ROUTINGBecause riding full seat height on gnarly terrain can be a scary proposition, we included cable guides for adjustable height seatposts.

SHImANO E-THRU 142mm x 12mm REAR AxLEShimano’s new rear axle system addresses the shortcomings of traditional through axle systems. Hub end caps self-align into machined grooves in the dropouts. No more struggling to align the hub perfectly in the frame to insert the axle. E-Thru does it for you.

HAmmERSCHmIDT COmPATIBILITYFor all-out versatility.

LIGHT AND STIffWe shaved 366 grams off its predecessor while increasing stiffness by 12% for a 29% increase in Slayer’s stiffness-to-weight ratio.

VERTEX TEAM RSL

MOUNTAIN

With World Cup, TransAlp, Cape Epic, and BC Bike Race wins to its credit, Vertex RSL is

certainly a proven winner. Using racer feedback, our engineers tweaked every feature

of Vertex RSL to create the best race hardtail on the market. Thanks to its fORm™

carbon construction, Vertex RSL is exceptionally light and stiff, yet it maintains the

legendary ride quality you would expect from Rocky Mountain.

RSLRACE TUNED COmPACT (RTC) GEOmETRYUsing feedback from our team racers, we settled on the perfect cross country race geometry. Having been piloted to World Cup wins by Geoff Kabush and Marie-Helene Premont, Vertex RSL is no stranger to the top of the podium.

HIGH mODULUS fORmTM CARBONVertex RSL uses high modulus carbon sourced from the finest carbon suppliers in the world. The result is a super light and super stiff frame with legendary Rocky Mountain ride quality.

100% ROCKY mOUNTAIN DESIGNED AND ENGINEE REDEvery angle, tube shape, and layer of carbon was designed, engineered, and tested in our Vancouver facility. No open molds and no third party engineering allows us to create the most technologically advanced frames possible.

ALLOYST3 GEOmETRYMountain’s tried and true sloping top tube geometry gives the riders ample standover height and a short wheelbase for nimble handling in technical terrain.

CUSTOm fORmTm SEATSTAYSNew custom S-bend seatstays that are circular at the seat tube junction and flare to a rectangular shape at the dropout. Circular shaped tubes are best when strength is required in all planes and rectangular tube shapes at the dropouts are best for fatigue strength..

LARGER TUBE jUNCTIONBy using a BB92 bottom bracket shell, we are able to increase the size of the down tube/seat tube junction, which increases stiffness without adding weight. Similarly, the new larger diameter head tube on Vertex allows for larger junctions with the top tube and down tube, further increasing stiffness and strength.

MOUNTAIN

We celebrated our 29th birthday with the launch of our Vertex and Altitude 29er

models, and for our 30th, we’re adding more to the lineup. In just one year, Altitude 29

became the leader in its category for not only pedaling efficiency, but also its ability

to tackle the steep and root infested Vancouver trails.

BC BRED GEOmETRYOur new 29ers are just as suited to the technical trails at our doorstep as they are the fast, flowy Marin County singletrack, or high alpine Swiss mountain passes. 29ers make sense and now they make sense in all kinds of terrain.

INTEGRATED TECHNOLOGIES We were able to optimize our 29er bikes with custom engineered fORm™ tubesets, creating the lightest and stiffest bikes possible. Using technologies like Shimano Direct Mount front derailleurs, ZeroStack head tubes and larger bottom bracket shells, we further fine-tuned the ride characteristics of our 29ers.

BB-92Efficient Long Travel - For climbing prowess, Altitude 29 is in a class by itself with its StraightUp™ geometry featuring a 76 degree seat tube angle, which puts the rider in the perfect sag corrected pedaling position. This geometry, combined with Rocky Mountain’s patented SmoothLink™ suspension system with 115mm of travel makes for the most efficient pedaling bike in the category.

FLATLINE

FLATLINE WORLD CUP

Developed in conjunction with the Maxxis-Rocky Mountain World Cup team, the solitary

goal behind Flatline WC was to give the riders the bike they would win on. Eight World

Cup wins and several podium placings later, it’s safe to say we met our goal. With its

low-slung LC2R suspension with linear rising rate, Flatline is an extremely efficient

pedaling design with consistent feel throughout its full travel. And when things get

steep and gnarly, its proven geometry is up to the task.

WORLD CUP PROVEN GEOmETRY

Working with Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain’s Sabrina Jonnier and Cameron Cole, we pinpointed the best race geometry for Flatline. With eight World Cup wins to its credit, its safe to say the geometry is a winner.

LC2R SUSPENSION

The optimum pivot location and linear rising rate of of Rocky Mountain’s patented LC2R suspension make for extremely efficient pedaling and a supple ride.

OPEN HEADTUBE CONSTRUCTION

Flatline features Rocky Mountain’s patented headtube mitering process in which both the down tube and head tube are mitered to the junction creating a lighter and stiffer front end.

LOW CENTER Of GRAVITY

Flatline shreds corners and is super stable in the air thanks to LC2R’s low slung suspension design.
