As parents ourselves, we believe in learning by doing and allowing children freedom to explore for themselves in a safe and stimulating environment. These themes and aims are reflected in the locations and activity programmes we provide for our schools and groups. Above all we know that if it is not fun, then children will not benefit from the learning opportunities or gain the self-confidence and personal enrichment that we know they can achieve. We think that we have found the right balance of enjoyment and new experiences that satisfy the needs of both the children and the leaders who, very generously, give up their time to run the trips. We look forward to welcoming you and your group to one of our active, outdoor centres.

The educational value of an activity trip to a Rockley Adventure centre lies in the unique combination of social, physical and environmental experiences. Our trips offer young people a sense of achievement and the opportunity to succeed in a non-competitive, outdoor environment. This helps build self-confidence and an awareness of personal strengths and abilities that may have been hidden in the classroom.

Helping young minds achieve extraordinary goals

We aim to offer an outdoor learning experience that promotes every child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being and encourages pupils to respond positively and confidently to new challenges and opportunities. An activity trip with Rockley Adventure is focused on enhancing learning through the unique combination of our natural environment, together with the passion and expertise of our dedicated team. Whether they are taking to the water sailing, raft-building with classmates or facing the high ropes challenge, pupils develop a belief that they can achieve success both at school and in life.

BELIEVE & YOU WILL ACHIEVE

Inspiring independent minds

Our mission is to empower children by giving them the environment in which to develop key skills. We believe that a positive learning experience outside of the classroom will increase confidence by participation and promote independent development.

Working together, learning together, playing together

The relationships that develop between pupils and their teachers, working together towards a common goal, is one that cannot be recreated easily in school, but is one that can be encouraged through a Rockley Adventure trip. As teachers and pupils share their adventure experience, pupils are motivated to work with and respect their peers, all of which contributes to their enjoyment and desire to learn.

What we work towards:

MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION

• Awaken environmental awareness• Increase social awareness

ACHIEVING ECONOMIC WELLBEING

• Increase confidence & aspirations• Broaden horizons

We understand and welcome the growing importance of outdoor education as part of a balanced curriculum, particularly in an increasingly urban world. A Rockley Adventure trip is based around the enhanced learning experience of our very own “Rockley Classroom”.

It is the combination of our unique centre environments and passionate, experienced and knowledgeable team which place the children at the centre of all that we do. The Rockley team is always available to work with Group Leaders to plan activity programmes and individual sessions to ensure specified learning objectives are met and participants reach the highest level of attainment that’s possible.

The transition from primary to secondary school and adapting to life at secondary school can be a challenging time for pupils. Our range of adventure trips are designed to support this time in their lives by encouraging pupils to positively interact with each other and to develop their social and personal skills so that they can form new friendships and grow into confident individuals.

Recognised Qualifications

National Curriculum Key Stages 2, 3 & 4

Rockley Adventure activity programmes develop higher-level skills through coaching in any of the core activities and satisfy all the areas of the Outdoor and Adventurous Activities section of the PE National Curriculum at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. By setting progressive, challenging and attainable goals, groups can use a Rockley Adventure trip as a great new environment in which to help deliver training in the transferable skills that help children with their transition between the key stages and into the wider world.

Duke Of Edinburgh Awards

Schools can choose to concentrate on a specific activity and in doing so can gain National Governing Body qualifications and work towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

As an RYA recognised training centre and an approved activity provider of the DofE scheme, pupils can now put their boating achievements towards a bronze, silver or gold award and also complete the residential sections of the award.

BTEC LEVEL 2 & 3

We also offer bespoke trips for BTEC students to enable them to gain the skills to put towards their qualifications. Whether this is helping with watersports theory sessions or on the water practical assessments, Rockley deliver the perfect course to help your students achieve the desired grades and experience.

Rockley Adventure offers a safe, secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. With space for adventure, we offer diverse and challenging experiences which will inspire and excite your pupils.

a residential adventure

It’s simple but true - you and your group come first with us. Your safety and enjoyment are always our number one priority.

You and your group will benefit from a huge depth of knowledge acquired through more than 38 years of involvement with teaching and leading young people on activity sessions in the outdoors.

We have been very careful to select locations for our centres that provide our unique blend of quality and well-appointed campsites with safe yet challenging sailing areas set in spectacular and beautiful surroundings.

The Rockley Classroom will make your trip an unforgettable, incredible learning experience and action adventure, all rolled into one superb trip.

Our programmes use modern equipment and a high level of instructional staff. We work continually with our Group Leaders to assess every aspect of our trips to improve year after year.

We give full support to all Group Leaders right from your initial enquiry to returning your group to school. Our schools team have worked as instructors and centre managers themselves and have extensive knowledge of our activities and procedures to provide you, your group and school management team with all the information required.

Standing on their own feet

Residential trips can help secondary school-age children to develop independence and bond with their peers and teachers in informal settings. They provide a wonderful opportunity for children to begin their journey as independent people with lives outside their own homes.

A residential week with Rockley Adventure provides valuable opportunities for promoting teamwork, social skills and communication skills. We firmly believe that positive and enjoyable learning experiences, in such a unique environment, create more effective and beneficial learning outcomes.

With a highly qualified and committed team of staff chosen for their passion for the outdoors and ability to instil a sense of fun into all aspects of your trip, from teaching to our programme of ‘after hours’ activities, we will ensure that your pupils are engaged in exciting and stimulating activities throughout their stay.

With a wide range of activities on offer, our multi-activity programmes allow pupils to flourish in a non-academic environment and develop improved relationships whilst reaching their highest potential.

Challenging

By enticing pupils out of their comfort zone and creating situations that may be new or unfamiliar to them, pupils are encouraged to take a positive approach to problems and find effective solutions.

Activities

Multi-activity programmes combine a variety of activities from sailing, windsurfing and kayaking to raft building and high ropes which will challenge personal ability, inspire creative thinking and teach pupils to respond positively to each other.

SAMPLE WEEK A sample plan for a sailing adventure to France.

With beautiful harbour - or lake-side locations as their ‘classroom’, pupils learn key life skills without realising it.

Thrill of sailing

Whether taking the helm of their own dinghy or sailing as part of a team, a sailing adventure will encourage independence as well as cooperation. Faced with the natural elements watch your pupils thrive in this new and often challenging environment as they are encouraged to test their own physical, mental and social capabilities.

Love learning

With a range of different types of sailing boats, we can offer pupils the best and most suitable sailing experiences so that they will learn quickly and become more self-assured. Sailing is outdoor adventure at its best, as pupils acquire new skills and hopefully a love of the water and the outdoors.

We have three activity centres based in France, all located around lakes in the Aquitaine region of southwest France. Our three centres are on the shores of freshwater lakes fringed by forests and sandy beaches and all just a few miles from the fabulous Atlantic coast. They offer quality facilities, swimming pools and entertainment as you would expect from high graded sites.

South West France - Aquitaine

Aquitaine stretches from Poitou-Charentes in the north down to the Spanish border in the south.

The region is characterised by sandy beaches backed by pine forests. To the north lie rolling vineyard-covered hills between Bordeaux and Bergerac, the densely forested Perigord with its prehistoric caves lie to the east and the mountains of the Pyrenees lie to the south. It enjoys sunny weather for much of the year, with temperatures ranging from 10°C in January to 32°C in August.

The Aquitaine forest supports fantastic wildlife with kites, shrikes, owls and hoopoes as well as delightful red squirrels. The lake margins are full of insect and amphibious life with dragonflies, butterflies, lizards, newts, frogs and even terrapins.

ROCKLEY LA RIVE

La Rive specialises in multi-activity programmes with variety and fun being the key to its relaxed and yet professional environment. Perfect for energetic groups that thrive on challenging activities, testing all ages and ability levels in a beautiful and safe outdoor environment.

Situated on the shores of the beautiful Lac Cazaux, La Rive is the most northerly of the watersports centres we operate in southwest France.

Safe and idyllic

The shallow waters and gently shelving sandy beaches offer some fantastic lunch spots to sail to. Whether it’s Navarrosse 2 miles to the south or Maguide 3 miles to the west, wherever your instructor chooses as the day’s destination, the sense of adventure and achievement your group will feel will be one of the highlights of their trip.

Our accommodation is nestled less than 50 metres from the beach amongst the pine trees of the Landaise forest, offering a welcome shady retreat after a busy day of activities.

Relaxed and charming

AzuRivage is located on the outskirts of the small Landaise village of Azur on the shores of Lac Soustons. This is the southern most watersports centre we operate in southwest France, just a few miles from the pretty town of Soustons. This three star campsite is set in a beautiful wooded area adjacent to the lake shore.

Facilities at this campsite include on-site supermarket, outdoor swimming pool, table tennis and a basketball court. The lake, although slightly smaller than those further north still offers a vast operational area for our watersports activities. The majority of our watersports equipment is stored in a private port area that gives easy and safe access to and from the lake for activity sessions.

Surf spot

In addition to our highly successful multi-activity programme, sailing and surfing courses are also run here. The local Atlantic beaches are renowned worldwide as providing the best surf conditions anywhere in Europe.

Whether or not you choose to take a surf course, the local surf culture can be experienced on either evening or day trips to the local towns of Hossegor and Biarritz, the location of many world class, professional surf competitions throughout the season.

Superb location

Le Lac Mimizan is based on a campsite on the shores of a freshwater lake close to the dramatic Atlantic beaches of the Landes region.

Our watersports activities launch directly onto the lake and the sheltered location provides an ideal introduction to our range of watersports activities from dinghy sailing to paddle boarding. It also provides the opportunity to explore the shoreline of Château Woolsack or land for lunch at a quiet, unspoilt beach.

Range of activities

Le Lac Mimizan is uniquely situated adjacent to one of the region’s fantastic high ropes parks with more than 100 different stages set high in the spectacular pines. Suitable for a range of ages from children to adult, this is a fantastic additional activity for groups. Le Lac Mimizan also benefits from a beautiful 9-hole golf course right next door – perfect for our teachers to take some time out away from their group and work on their handicap.

Of the many places in the UK for watersports, Poole Harbour is possibly the safest and most idyllic location, offering a secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. SLEEPING UNDER CANVAS

Residential activity trips provide an opportunity to gain experience of living away from home and the chance to develop key personal qualities such as self-reliance and increased independence.

EAT, LIVE, SLEEP

Camping is fun!

Camping trips have become increasingly popular as people put civilization behind them to enjoy the best that the countryside has to offer. The children benefit from the space and serenity of living closer to nature in a high-quality camping environment.

Sleeping

A trip with Rockley Adventure means getting the most out of outdoor living, with ‘alfresco’ meals, plenty of fresh air with space and freedom to relax. All your pupils are grouped in their accommodation according to their age and sex. Pupils, accompanying adults and our staff all eat together in our communal area, which provides a convivial setting for socialising.

Our three lakeside centres in southwest France are uniquely arranged where we have our own area for our tent villages. Our villages are made up of 4 to 8 chalet-style tents, which sleep, on average, 6 children. Each tent has electric lights, metal frame beds, mattresses, curtains and, for added safety, a personal alarm. As Group Leader, your tent will also have a cooker, fridge, cooking utensils and some refreshments to welcome you on arrival. It will be sited a short distance from your group’s village.

UK Living

At our UK centre, Rockley Point, your group will be in bunk accommodation. Each room can sleep up to 6 pupils and has its own bathroom. Group Leaders also sleep in shared accommodation.

Direct by executive coach

Group Leaders have always appreciated coach travel for its convenience, flexibility and value for money.

We take the same care over your travel arrangements as with all other aspects of our activity trips. Our itineraries for trips to our French centres have been put together to ensure the majority of travelling occurs through the night so that you and your group arrive fresh and in time for breakfast.

Our coach companies are licensed operators with many years of experience and work closely with us regarding maintaining and improving the travel element of your trip.

Other travel options

For trips to our French centres via executive coach we generally use the Dover - Calais ferry route. However, we are able to offer travel via Eurostar, by air or via executive coach using alternative ferry crossings to make your journey as comfortable and convenient as possible. Just speak to one of the Rockley Schools Team who can help you work out the best route.

TRAVEL

We aim to make your journey to our centres as comfortable and pleasurable as possible. All our French activity trips include executive coach travel to and from our centres and we will be happy to help with arrangements for travel to Rockley Point.

LEADING THE WAY IN SAFETY

Every child in safe hands

We choose the best and most suitable equipment for our activities, which, combined with safe teaching practices means everyone can enjoy the thrills and gain a sense of achievement on a Rockley Adventure activity trip. Rockley has an AALA license to operate its centres in Poole. This scheme only covers the UK, but we also apply the same high standards to our centres in France. Our centres are inspected by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) which means that you can relax safe in the knowledge that our centres meet the requirements of relevant governing bodies and safety and quality accreditation organisations. These requirements cover, for example, the standards of equipment, staff training and qualifications and safety procedures at our centres.

Serious about safety

We are dedicated to ensuring that we set high standards of good operating practice which are above and beyond any Inspector’s requirements.

We are acutely aware that any adventure activity trip cannot be thoroughly enjoyed unless you are completely confident in the safety of the centre and all activities. Over the last 38 years we have worked hard to earn an enviable reputation for the high standards, which we apply at all of our centres.

To make planning your trip with us as easy as possible, please take the time to read the following information. If however you have any further questions then the Rockley Adventure Schools Team are only a phone call away and would be delighted to assist you further.

All you need to know

What specialist equipment is required?

A watersports trip (unlike a ski trip) does not require much in the way of specialist equipment. We provide all the necessary boats, boards, bikes and kayaks as well as approved buoyancy aids and waterproofs! You usually only need to bring swimming things as well as old clothing and trainers you don’t mind getting wet. Nevertheless, the watersports activities can be enjoyed to the full if participants wear a rash vest and wetsuit shoes, which are widely available to purchase. A wetsuit might also be a useful purchase and these are also now widely available at reasonable cost.

Do you have to be a strong swimmer?

You don’t have to be a strong swimmer, or even a swimmer at all, to enjoy our watersports activities although it helps to be water confident. As mentioned above, we provide buoyancy aids and, provided we are notified, we can cater for non-swimmers.

Are there any extra charges?

Our residential school group trips are fully

inclusive of our activities as detailed here and in your group’s itinerary, all meals and drinks from arrival to departure at the centre, insurance and, for trips to our French centres, return travel. We do offer a number of extra additional activities and excursions to enhance your trip. These can be arranged and paid for in advance or on arrival and are subject to availability. No refunds will be given for extras booked and paid for but not used.

What about insurance?

Our residential activity trips include personal accident and travel insurance. Please see the Trip Planner, or our website, for further details and complete policy wording. For activity trips that fall within the Package Travel Regulations (1993) your money is fully protected by an insurance scheme operated by International Passenger Protection Ltd.

What about safety?

All our watersports centres are fully recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) for the tuition of sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and are

inspected annually. This means that our watersports activities are run in line with the guidelines laid down by our NGB, the Royal Yachting Association, and encompass staff qualifications and experience, instructor to participant ratios and our operational procedures. In addition, our UK centres are AALS (Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme) licensed. We have also developed a comprehensive Safety Management System to monitor, record and implement safe operation of our centres and activities, which encompasses policies, risk assessment, emergency and operating procedures. See also our website for further information on our safety procedures and for downloads of documentation such as our risk assessments at www.rockley.org/schools/teachers

Do the coaches have seatbelts?

All the UK coach company operators used on our inclusive French activity trips comply with UK, as well as EU law, and are fitted with seatbelts. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to ensure that the seatbelts are worn.

30

Rockley Adventure

Page 31: Rockley Schools Brochure 2016

Do we need passports?

You are required to have a full 10 year passport in order to visit France and non-EU passport holders may require visas. Young people travelling as a group can travel under a Group Passport obtainable from the Passport Agency. Contact them for further information on 0870 5210410 and see also our Trip Planner. Lost, stolen or new passports will take a minimum of 2 weeks to replace.

Campsite and centre rules

We ask that all our groups comply with the rules set out by the campsites and ourselves. This helps ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our customers and other users of the campsites and facilities. These rules are to be found in our pupil behaviour charter and will be detailed in our Welcome Talk on arrival of your group.

Supervision

The campsites organise their own evening entertainment programmes throughout high season such as cabaret performances and a disco, which is generally open until 1am. Daytime programmes such as sporting activities can be arranged at the campsite reception. All the activities are subject to demand and may be altered. Rockley

Adventure staff are resident at our centres and therefore provide supervision during the day and evening. Certain staff are nominated as contacts for Group Leaders and group members through-out the day and evening; we also have a mem-ber of staff on duty through the night. Group Leaders are required to nominate two of the adults from their group on a daily basis to be their group’s duty contact staff throughout the day, evening and night.

Accommodation

Both our tent and bunkroom accommodation sleeps a maximum of 6 people.

Security

Each of our watersports centres is located on a private campsite with only one entrance/exit and is in a separate area of the campsite itself.

Safes

Our centres can store passports, EHIC cards and any cash float held by the Group Leader in the centre safe. We are, however, unable to provide secure storage for pupils’ mobile phones, MP3 or ipod players etc which is why we strongly discourage the bringing of valuable belongings on the trip.

First Aid

Our centres are fully equipped with first aid boxes located in the Rockley offices on site. All our main safety boats carry a First Aid kit and VHF radio. All our Instructors hold a valid First Aid certificate and attend a health and safety induction when joining us.

Currency & pocket money

We recommend that you carry a float of Euros/ Sterling for unforeseen circumstances. However, for safety reasons we suggest that you use travellers cheques or credit cards where possible. Pupils should be advised to bring only a small amount of pocket money; up to €100 is normally sufficient for trips to our French centres and between £20 to £40 for residential trips to our UK centre.

Facilities

We try to be as accurate as possible with regards to the availability and opening times of the facilities available on the campsites. However, due to circumstances beyond our control ie weather, time of year, local regulations or demand, some facilities may not be available - this will particularly be the case outside of high season (July and August) when the campsites are quieter.

InsuranceThe cost of our overseas trips includes travel insurance cover for each member of your party (except anyone normally resident outside the UK). Your insurance is covered under a master policy specially arranged through Fogg Travel Insurance Services Limited. The insurance is valid for trip departures between 1st January 2015 to 31st December 2015. A summary of cover can be found below and on our website: www.rockley.org/schools/teachers

On activity sessions, this responsibility is delegated to the Company’s staff. Whilst at centre, the Group Leader will, on a daily basis, nominate two adult members of the group to be the duty contact staff throughout the day, evening and night for the group. Where damage is caused to the Company’s equipment e.g. boats, tents, etc as a result of willful damage by a group member or under the influence of drink or drugs, or as a result of a group member not obeying the Company staff’s instructions, then the group will be responsible for the full amount of the repair or replacement. The Company expects all members of a group to have consideration for other people. If in the Company’s reasonable opinion or in the reasonable opinion of any other person in authority, you or any member of your group behaves in such a way as to cause or be likely to cause danger, upset or distress to any third party or damage to property, the Company is entitled, without prior notice to terminate the trip of the person(s) concerned. In this situation, the person(s) concerned will be required to leave the Company’s centre. The Company will have no further responsibility toward such person(s) including any return travel arrangements. No refunds will be made and the Company will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of the termination.11. Force MajeureThe Company reserves the right to cancel/curtail your trip due to circumstances amounting to ‘Force Majeure’ - these include, but are not limited to, war, riots, government action, terrorism, fire, weather conditions, strike action and all similar events outside the Company’s or the supplier of contracted services’ control which prevent or effect the Company’s contractual obligation. Where such circumstances occur the Company will not be liable to pay you refunds or compensation.12. Company liabilityThe Company accepts responsibility should any of the services which we are contractually obliged to provide prove deficient or not

of reasonable standard. This includes responsibility for the acts or omissions of any of our employees, subcontractors and suppliers. Save that as detailed below, no liability is accepted for death, injury or illness. The Company does not accept liability or responsibility for personal injury to, or the death of any participant howsoever caused unless by the proven negligence of the Company, employees, suppliers or subcontractors. In addition, the Company is NOT liable for death, injury or illness caused by an activity outside of the Company’s activities. The Company cannot accept liability for causes of dissatisfaction which are not notified to us, in writing, within 28 days of completion of the trip. The Company is only liable for the provision of special requests where the Company has confirmed their availability in writing beforehand. 13. BrochuresThe Company’s brochures are prepared some months in advance. Every reasonable effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the facts contained in the published brochures. If the Company ascertains or is notified of any subsequent changes to the published details herein, the Company will advise you as soon as is reasonably possible. 14. Personal propertyYour personal property, including baggage, is your own responsibility at all times, unless any loss or damage is due to the negligence or failure of the Company to carry out its responsibility. 15. EquipmentAll the dinghies used by the centres are fully approved by the Royal Yachting Association as suitable for teaching sailing. All buoyancy aids are of an approved design. 16. Travel ticketsAll travel tickets or other vouchers provided before the trip are valid for that particular trip and no refunds can be made if lost, mislaid or unused. 17. Company staffIn the interests of the safety of the group, as well as individuals, the Company’s Representatives have complete discretion over all waterbased activities and any other activities arranged by the Company regarding weather conditions and their assessment of group members’ ability. All waterbased activities are offered subject to availability. The Company cannot be held responsible for loss of use of watersports equipment due to

adverse weather conditions.18. Restaurants and local facilitiesIn early and late season some restaurants and local facilities may be closed and although mentioned in the brochure and Group Leader’s Guide, cannot be guaranteed. 19. Special requestsAny special requests must be clearly notified to the Company in writing. The Company will endeavour to meet any special requests made by you and ensure that these are forwarded to the appropriate persons. The Company cannot guarantee, however, that special requests will only be held to form part of the contract between you and the Company when they have been confirmed in writing to be guaranteed by the Company. 20. ComplaintsIt is the Company’s aim to give you an enjoyable and trouble-free trip. If you do have a problem or complaint it is important and in your own interest to tell your Centre Manager so that steps can be taken to resolve the matter on the spot. If your complaint cannot be resolved there and then, please complete one of our Client Liaison forms at the centre and notify us, in writing, immediately upon your return. Because of the difficulties of investigating a complaint too long after the event, the Company cannot consider any complaint unless it is received, in writing, within 28 days of your group’s return from their trip. Disputes arising out of, or in connection with this contract which cannot be amicably settled may be referred to arbitration, if you so wish, under a special scheme which is administered quite independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.21. ImagesFrom time to time authorized parties may carry out photography and/or video recording. You agree that we may use such images in promotional, advertising or publicity material in any form whatsoever. You further agree that copyright rests with such authorized parties and/or the Company. 22. FeedbackThe Company may use your written feedback in promotional materials whether this is received in the form of letters, our customer satisfaction questionnaires or in emails. If you would rather not be quoted, please let us know on any written feedback you send us.
