During the Course

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course should be taken by geophysicists, geologists, engineers who wish to have better

understanding about how seismic and log data relatde to rock and fluid properties.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course covers fundamentals of Rock Physics and Statistical Rock Physics, ranging from basic

laboratory and theoretical results to practical recipes that can be immediately applied in the field. We

will present qualitative and quantitative tools for understanding and predicting the effects of lithology,

pore fluid types and saturation, stress and pore pressure, and temperature on seismic velocity. We will

present case studies and strategies for quantitative seismic interpretation and, suggestions for more

effectively employing seismic-to-rock properties transforms in reservoir characterization, with emphasis

on seismic interpretation for lithology and subsurface fluid detection. The course is recommended for all

geophysicists, reservoir geologists, seismic interpreters, and engineers concerned with reservoir

characterization, reservoir delineation, hydrocarbon detection, reservoir development and recovery

monitoring.

COURSE OUTLINE

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Tapan Mukerji - received his BS in physics in 1986 and his MS in geophysics in

1989 from Banaras Hindu University, India. Tapan joined the Stanford Rock Physics

group in September of 1989 and completed his Ph.D. in geophysics in 1995 from

Stanford University. He is currently co-director of Stanford Center for Reservoir

Forecasting. His research and teaching is in the area of Rock Physics. His current

focus is to develop ways to use rock physics knowledge to help bridge the gaps

between seismic methods, interpretation, reservoir flow simulations, and

geostatistics.

Tapan (along with Gary Markov and Jack Dvorkin) published "The Rock Physics Handbook" in 1998,

and (with Per Avseth and Gary Markov) Quantitative Seismic Interpretation, in 2005. He was awarded

"Karcher Award" by the SEG in 2000. His Professional activities and experiences are Co-director SCRF

(2008-present); associate editor, Geophysics, (2001-present); invited instructor, Mathematical

Geophysics Summer School, Stanford, (2001); co-chair, technical committee, 11th Venezuelan

Geophysical Congress, (2002); proposal review, Department of Energy and American Chemical

Society (2003-present); manuscript review for professional journals; member, AAAS, AGU, SEG.
