Brief Outline of the genre: Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Usual Lyrical Content: Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis.

Famous Rock Artists

The Beatles: The Beatles were an English rock band that formed in Liverpool, in 1960. With John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling music artists in the United States, with 178 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act.

AC/DC: An Australian hard rock band, formed in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, AC/DC continued as members until Malcolm's illness and departure in 2014. Commonly referred to as a hard rock or blues rockband, they are also considered pioneers of heavy metal and sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71.5 million albums in the United States alone, making them the tenth-best-selling band in the United States and one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.

Conventions of the GenreClothing: In terms of clothes it is

natural to find artists of the rock genre wearing black or dark coloured clothing, skinny jeans, leather and even sometimes make up.

In terms of camera angles close ups on the lead singer and the rest of the band can be seen being used often. It is also likely to see mid shots of the band playing their instruments and the lead singer singing. To create the feel that the viewers are watching the artist live, quick shot changes and pans around the stage are used in music videos.

Conventions of the GenreMusically, rock has centred on the electric

guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass guitar and drums.

It is also typical to find that music in the rock genre is song-based.

Similar to the R&B genre, it is quite common to find this genre predominately filled with a specific ethnic group. This is why the dominance of rock genre is mostly white, male musicians. With this dominance it has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music.

Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music.
