Rock & Roll: A Visual Fable About Pictures

How to draw ideas by Dan Roam www.napkinacademy.com

Once upon a time, there were two friends.

Their names were Rock and Roll.

Rock was a bit stiff.

Clunk.

Roll was a bit loopy.

Although very different, they understood each other well.

“ ” “ ”

One day, Rock had a great idea.

!

The problem was, the idea was a bit… complicated.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...

And the more Rock tried to clarify, the less either of them understood.

To help out his struggling friend, Roll suggested that Rock try to draw his idea.

To which Rock said…

But I can’t draw!

To which Roll replied…

Of course you can!

Through videos, Dan Roam (The Back of the Napkin guy)

shows you how to draw and communicate anything.

You’ll start as a RED BELT novice, learning the basics.

Drawing shapes…

Like this.

And this.

And this.

And basic objects…

Like these.

And these.

And even this.

And stick figures.

Like this.

And this.

And this.

I can draw those!

Rock was excited.

So Rock did.

And did.

And did.

And did.

Well, whaddya know…

You’re awesome. I’m amazing.

But wait, Rock – there’s more!

Once you can draw the basics, you’ll take it up a notch.

You’ll advance to YELLOW BELT, where you’ll learn to draw the six elemental pix.

A portrait, a chart, a map, a timeline, a flowchart, and a summary.

These six elemental pix are the building blocks of all visual ideas.

When you can draw them, you can draw anything.

Why don’t you try? Start by drawing a simple little portrait illustrating WHO is involved in your idea…

So Rock drew a little portrait.

Then he drew another portrait.

They showed who his idea was about.

That’s you and me!

That wasn’t so hard, was it Rock?.

Looking good. I’m SO amazing.

Then Rock drew a chart to show amount.

I can’t move at all and you’re all

over the place! Looks about right to me.

Then Rock drew a map to show position.

We’d both like to shift our locations

more easily. That’s for

sure.

Then Rock drew a timeline to show sequence.

I think better movement could

happen in a series of steps.

Makes sense to me.

Then Rock drew a flowchart to show how.

Imagine if we took some of

your movement… Okay…

Then Rock drew a flowchart to show how.

…and used it to power my

movement. That could

work!

Finally, Rock drew a summary to show why.

Then we could travel together!

How great would that be!

Wow, Rock. Look what you just drew!

There’s your whole idea in 6 simple pictures!

These people…

In these quantities…

In these locations… Move in this sequence…

Triggering this…

To this effect!

And that’s not all.

Yep. There’s more!

Because when you advance to master BLACK BELT lessons…

… you’ll learn how to make powerful presentations and viral videos from your drawings!

So those little drawings become a video…

…that you can share with the world!

Sales? Training? Product development? Teaching? Innovating? Leading?

Add a little Rock and Roll to your ideas with pictures. It works.
