ROCHESTER RED WINGS GAME NOTES - 4.7.16 UPCOMING PROBABLES 4/8 @ SWB 6:35 pm LHP Pat Dean vs. RHP Kyle Haynes WHTK 1280 4/9 SWB 4:05 pm RHP Jose Berrios vs. RHP Nick Rumbelow WHTK 1280 4/10 SWB 1:35 pm RHP Alex Meyer vs. RHP Anthony Swarzak WHTK 1280 4/11 LHV 6:35 pm LHP Logan Darnell vs. TBD WHTK 1280 LAST SEASON: Rochester finished 77-67 for the third straight season after never finishing with identical records in back-to-back years in franchise history. Reynaldo Rodriguez was named Team Most Valuable Player after pacing the International League with 81 runs scored while he finished in the top five of the league in doubles, triples, extra-base hits and total bases. James Beresford hit a career-high .307 with a career-best 153 hits, good for second in the league behind IL MVP Matt Hague of Buffalo. Both Rodriguez and Beresford earned IL post-season All-Star honors. Two stalwarts in the Red Wings rotation were Pat Dean (179.0) and Taylor Rogers (174.0) who finished first and second in all of Minor League Baseball, respectively, in innings pitched. Dean led the league with three shutouts. Despite career seasons from several players, Rochester finished second in the IL North, 4.0 games behind Scranton Wilkes-Barre, and 6.0 games behind Indianapolis for the Wild Card. NEW FACES: Despite 12 of the players on Rochester's Opening Day roster having experience with the Red Wings a season ago, only one that appeared in last year's Opening Day lineup has a chance to play in tonight's game. Reynaldo Rodriguez batted fifth and played first base for the Wings on April 9 in Buffalo, the only starter in the batting order that may play today. Of the other eight starters in the lineup, only Eddie Rosario remains in the Twins organization. Alex Meyer started Opening Day a year ago and Logan Darnell appeared in relief but both are penciled in to pitch the fourth and five games of the season, respectively. ANOTHER WINNING SEASON IN THE ROC: As mentioned above, Rochester finished 10 games over .500 at 77-67 for the third straight season. It marks the first time the Red Wings have finished at least 10 games over .500 three straight seasons since legendary Joe Altobelli's clubs finished four straight seasons above .500 from 1973-76. SHUTOUT NOTES: Rochester recorded 21 shutouts in 2015, most by an IL team since Tidewater had 21 in 1975 and most by a Red Wings team since recording 24 in 1974. The Red Wings had nine shutouts in August alone, more than three teams (Charlotte-8, Pawtucket-7 and Toledo-4) had all season and tied with two other team's (Syracuse and Louisville) 2015 total. The Palm Beach Cardinals (Florida State League), Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs (National League) tied with Rochester for the most shutouts across MLB and MiLB. REY OF HOPE: Last season, Reynaldo Rodriguez became the first Red Wing with more than 34 doubles in a season since Luis Rodriguez had 35 in 2003. He and Danny Oritz - now with Indianapolis - became the first pair of Wings teammates with more than 30 doubles in a season since Garrett Jones and Randy Ruiz each had 33 in 2008. Rodriguez ranked near the top of International League in runs (1st, 81), extra-base hits (2nd, 57), doubles (2nd, 34), RBI (4th, 80), total bases (T-5th, 224) and triples (T-5th, 7). He set or tied a career- high in RBI, runs and triples. NOTHING MINER ABOUT IT: Top Minnesota prospects fill this year's Opening Day roster as six of the top 13 Twins prospects and three of the top five in the organziation according to MLB.com will open the season with Rochester: RHP Jose Berrios (#1), OF Max Kepler (#2), INF Jorge Polanco (#5), OF Adam Brett Walker (#10), RHP Alex Meyer (#11) and LHP Taylor Rogers (#13). Berrios (#18), Kepler (#43) and Polanco (#96) are ranked among MLB. com's Top 100 Prospects. OPENING AT SWB: Rochester will open the season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the first time since beating the then-Red Barons 6-3. Of the 36 previous Opening Day lineups since 1980, the Red Wings have opened against Scranton/WB only four times.
