Artist’s statement

Greetings old friends, new friends, soon to be friends and welcome to my painting website. I have been painting for about 25 years and, until recently, it has been somewhat secondary to my love of landscape architecture. Now, at the ripe young age of 68, change is in the air and I find myself painting daily. Like so many abstract painters, my first several years of experimentation were concerned with representational watercolor, almost always of elements within the many different types of international landscapes where my profession carried me. I rarely have thoughts, other than maybe colors in motion, when commencing a new painting. My process is very much about 'nowness'. It happens now and returning to a piece in process, there is simply another now. I choose not to think about it but rather to emote about it because the heart works at lightening speed compared to the mind. This is the incredible beauty of the abstract process. Sometimes, they are just not meant to be finished now and they may take a week, a month, or even a year until that feeling comes along but then again, periodically, it may take just an afternoon from start to finish. The medium these days consists of acrylic, ink, oil pastel, metallic watercolor, and periodically natural vegetable and mineral pigments from India which are highly staining. I consider most of this work to be 'abstract landscapes' so I try to experience many different types of rural and urban landscapes and generate quick images to be developed back in the studio. Also, the outside abstract 'plein aire' painting process is just great, especially when sharing the time with painting friends.
