Welcome to the Autumn season at the RNCM

We reach the grand old age of 40 this season and, amongst a series of special anniversary projects, our Ludwig van festival celebrates the music and legacy of Beethoven, with days devoted to the first and second symphonies this Autumn (22 November and 14 December), the festival continuing after Christmas through to June 2013 (see page 35).

RNCM Opera presents for the first time one of Claudio Monteverdi’s operas, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (9, 11, 13 and 15 December). In total contrast, we present two operas virtually still wet on the page, as Music Theatre Wales and Scottish Opera collaborate to bring us a double-bill first seen at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival (7 November).

One of jazz’s greatest drummers, Jack DeJohnette visits the UK this Autumn with a band that includes the equally legendary Don Byron (13 November). American pianists Fred Hersch (10 October) and Uri Caine (22 November) also feature, and the Nu Civilisation Orchestra celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence with a tribute to Joe Harriott (20 October), this as part of the UK-wide Lively Up! Festival. The RNCM Big Band kicks off another year with two projects: with saxophonist Dave O’Higgins and band leader Pete Wraight (17 November) and a Christmas show featuring the remarkable vocals of Liane Carroll (12 December).

Another fine jazz voice breathes new life into the poetry of W B Yeats, as Christine Tobin sails to Byzantium as part of this year’s Manchester Literature Festival (21 October). A second collaboration with MLF (16 October) explores the story of the première of Shostakovich’s ‘Leningrad’ symphony, through readings from Sarah Quigley’s new novel and a live performance of the composer’s Eighth String Quartet. There are yet more stories, real and imagined, from Kathryn Tickell’s Northumberland (27 October) and Seth Lakeman’s Dartmoor (19 October). From over the ocean, we welcome the latest artist riding high on Portugal’s remarkable Fado revival, Carminho (12 November). And three shows together demonstrate the incredible depth of music created here and now: the latest project from Jóhann Jóhannsson, a new score for the 1929 silent film Pandora’s Box created in collaboration with Opera North Projects (2 November); the not-so-silent sonic experiments of Norwegian band Supersilent, working for the first time with ex-Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones (16 November); and a new project from new band Vulgar Display, which promises to explore the territory where the classical piano trio meets heavy metal (6 December).

We feature Simon Bainbridge’s work in the festival Music Space Reflection, in partnership with the BBC Philharmonic (18 -19 October), as well as regular Autumn features, the RNCM Saxophone Day (28 October), the RNCM Wind Weekend (10 -11 November) and the third edition of the RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition (26 November -1 December).

RNCM piano alumnus Christian Blackshaw brings an all-Mozart recital to RNCM, following glowing national reviews (23 October), whilst Paul Lewis and Imogen Cooper play piano duets together for the first time (10 December). Also in the run up to Christmas, The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments bring the music of angels to life, using many of those eponymous strange and ancient instruments to do so (8 December).

The Heath (30 October) and Brodsky Quartets (4 December) give recitals, alongside a typically strong programme from the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society, featuring the Sacconi (24 September) and Goldner Quartets (17 December), the Cropper/Welsh/Roscoe

Piano Trio (15 October), and violist Maxim Rysanov (19 November). Rysanov also gives a masterclass (20 November), as do mezzo-soprano Ann Murray (17 October) and marimba star Keiko Abe (2 October). Finally, Manchester Camerata’s season features Mozart concertos and Haydn symphonies in the first concerts of a three-year exploration (13 October and 24 November).

You’ll find over 20 free lunchtime concerts this Autumn, with regular performances on Mondays and Thursdays and occasionally on Fridays too. And look out for our free Spotlights, a chance to see a little of the music that we make here at the College every day of the year.

We look forward to seeing you at the RNCM this Autumn, celebrating our anniversary year through the experience of live music-making.

Celebrating 40 years This season the RNCM celebrates its 40th birthday. Over four decades the College has nurtured over 5,500 students, many of whom are shaping the artistic world in the UK and far beyond as performers, composers, teachers, artistic administrators and much more besides. And from the very start the College has placed performance at its heart, presenting an artistic programme across four public performance venues that plays a major role in the cultural life of our city, Manchester.

The idea of bringing together the Northern School of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music was mooted as early as 1955, but it wasn’t until 1973 that this vision became a reality, right here on Manchester’s Oxford Road. One of the founders of the new RNCM was Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, and we celebrate her own 100th year at the Opening Concert of our celebrations on 15 November, a recreation of the first programme performed by an RNCM orchestra, 40 years to the day that the first notes were played (see page 22).

A week later we open Ludwig van, a six-month Beethoven festival that explores how this composer transformed Western classical music forever. The festival features not one, but two Beethoven symphony cycles, plus weekends dedicated to his chamber, string and keyboard

music, and a contemporary festival-within-a-festival that re-invents his music for the 21st century (see pages 25, 33 and 35).

In November, we launch the RNCM in the City series, a gift to Manchester of 40 free public concerts featuring music of all shapes and forms in 40 different venues across the city. The first concert will take place at the Town Hall (see page 26) and the line-up of all 40 concerts will be announced in the Autumn.

RNCM in the City runs through to June 2013, as does the Ludwig van festival, which closes with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at The Bridgewater Hall on 28 June, 40 years to the day that the RNCM was officially opened by HRH The Duchess of Kent in 1973. Before then we’ll be working in partnership with the Britten-Pears Foundation to reinvent Benjamin Britten’s Young

Person’s Guide to the Orchestra for the digital age, celebrating our partnership with Opera North with an Opera Gala on 22 January, and enjoying An Enchanted Evening with Sir Willard White (currently the RNCM’s President) at The Bridgewater Hall on 12 June. And to close our celebrations we will be creating the latest in a series of large-scale musical installations for major public spaces, this time working for the first time in an iconic site in London.

Fred HerschFred Hersch is one of the most highly praised, prolific pianists of his generation. He has crafted a signature approach to the standard jazz repertoire, breathing fresh life into time-tested classics with keen insight and extraordinary technique, whilst his own lyrical compositions show a disarming combination of quirky ideas and dazzling beauty.

From the early 70s onwards, the Grammy-nominated Hersch worked as a sideman with jazz legends such as Art Farmer, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz and has collaborated with Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell. The New York Times described him as being ‘a pianist, composer and conceptualist of rare, imaginative power’.

The Conductor Manchester Literature FestivalSarah Quigley, Clark Rundell, David Horne and Torelli String Quartet

New Zealand author Sarah Quigley reads from her bestselling novel The Conductor. It retells the story of the performance of Shostakovich’s seventh symphony during the siege of Leningrad in 1942, following Shostakovich and the conductor of the infamous performance, Karl Eliasberg. Interweaving fact and fiction, Sarah beautifully explores themes of friendship, survival and the power of music to sustain people in the darkest of times. Sarah will be joined in conversation about her research and inspiration for the book by RNCM’s Head of Conducting Clark Rundell and composer David Horne. Musicians from the RNCM will bring the evening to a close with a moving performance of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 8, a score dedicated to the victims of fascism and war.

Nu Civilisation Orchestra Parallel: A multi-media concert celebrating the music of Joe HarriottA be-bop player at heart, Jamaican free-form jazz genius Joe Harriott fused the influences of Charlie Parker with his own Jamaican musical sensibilities. He also sought inspiration from visual artists such as Picasso. Brainchild of double bassist Gary Crosby OBE, and conducted by Peter Edwards, the Nu Civilisation Orchestra is one of the UK’s most exciting and most diverse jazz orchestras. In Parallel, this outstanding ensemble explores the interaction between musical and visual improvisation as Harriott conceived it, creating an engaging, multi-dimensional and highly accessible tribute, enriched with art created by rising star visual artist, Emma Godebska.Parallel is part of the Lively Up! We’re delighted to welcome RNCM alumnus Christian Blackshaw back to the College for the latest in his series of Mozart Sonata recitals, which have been receiving rave reviews across the country. The Financial Times described his January Wigmore Hall performance as ‘exceptional - both for the quality and integrity of his playing’ and pinpointed ‘a kaleidoscope of feeling’ that Blackshaw unleashed in Mozart’s often underestimated music for solo piano.

Christine Tobin: Sailing to Byzantium Manchester Literature FestivalSailing to Byzantium is an evocative collection of 12 poems by W B Yeats set to music by the Irish singer-songwriter and BBC award-winning jazz vocalist Christine Tobin. The poems range from Yeats’ early work through to his final collection, from love poems such as When you are old, to works that chart his desire to find a deeper spiritual truth, as in the epic Sailing to Byzantium. Joined by a stellar quartet featuring Phil Robson on guitar, cellist Kate Shortt, pianist Liam Noble and Dave Whitford on double bass, Christine and her ‘24 carat voice’ (as described by The Guardian) bring great warmth and luminosity to Yeats’ poetry through these inspired settings.

A closed door that sparks an obsession so strong the boundaries between reality and fantasy begin to blur. A modern day bar where three people trying to escape their past collide uncovering a terrible secret and unleashing inevitable tragedy. Premièring at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival, both of these short operas, penned by two of the UK’s finest young composers, explore the capacity of the mind to shape our lives, whether through the potency of imagination or the overwhelming power of memories. CarminhoCarminho is Portugal’s brightest new star. Her first album, Fado, was a burning statement of intent from a 25-year-old who realised after attending university and travelling the globe that singing the music of her homeland was her calling in life. It went on to be named the best album of 2011 by Songlines. Her new album, Alma (Portuguese for ‘soul’), was released in March of this year and portrays a woman growing in spirit as well as talent; combining traditional fado songs resurrected from the dusty tavernas of old with her own music and new arrangements of the work of Brazilian greats like Fernanda Maria and Vinicius de Moraes, Carminho’s voice glistens with potent, raw tenderness as it soars over quintessential Portuguese and acoustic Spanish guitars.

Over the next seven months we will be celebrating the RNCM’s 40th anniversary with a programme of special events that will toast the many achievements of the RNCM over four

decades and set the scene for the years ahead. You can read more about what’s planned on pages 4-5.

We launch our celebrations with a concert in honour of Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, the driving force behind the creation of the College, to celebrate her 100th birthday this year.

The combined force of one of the world’s most questing musical units and Led Zeppelin’s legendary multi-instrumentalist resonates deep over a select set of UK dates. The art of instant composition will be taken to beautifully realised places by this peerless group of musicians.

The Norwegian ‘deathjazzambientavantrock’ ensemble Supersilent have just one rule: no rehearsals. Every recording and concert is entirely improvised, approaching each show with a conceptual rigour that makes each one a distinct and coherent soundworld. Following his unparalleled career as founder member of Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones has worked with artists including Diamanda Galas, REM, Brian Eno, Seasick Steve and Nickel Creek. He released his début solo album Zooma in 1999 and ten years later co-founded the band Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme, releasing a universally acclaimed album and touring the world to sold-out venues.

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN 1One of our 40th anniversary highlights, our Ludwig van festival celebrates the music and legacy of Beethoven. Each of his nine symphonies is presented in the context of a day of study sessions, talks and a second cycle of symphony transcriptions, together looking at these symphonies with fresh eyes from all sides.

We start with Beethoven’s first symphony, a work that clearly established its composer as the inheritor of Haydn’s symphonic legacy. For further information, see pages 4-5 and page 35; Ludwig van continues with a Beethoven 2 day on Friday 14 December (see page 33).

Vulgar Display Tournament RoadkillLaunched in February this year, Vulgar Display is a new music ensemble that seeks to render an irreconcilable antagonism between extreme metal and contemporary classical music. As such, the instrumentation embraces both the brutality and aggression of the former and the (perceived) delicacy and subtlety of the latter: heavily distorted and detuned electric guitar, a percussion battery and a traditional piano trio. A number of eminent composers, including Gary Carpenter, David Horne, Emily Howard and Larry Goves, have written music especially for the project and their work is showcased tonight.

The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments The Ministry of AngelsClara Sanabras voice, renaissance guitar, oud Clare Salaman hurdy gurdy, nyckelharpa, hardanger violin Joy Smith harps, percussion Peter McCarthy basses

Angels have played a part in human consciousness for as long as we can remember. Their roles in the life of mankind are various; they appear as guardians, guides, judges and interpreters and cross barriers of culture, language, religion and geography. Many are a force for good, but there are also fallen angels, angels of death and others who are spirits of wrath, destruction, confusion and vengeance.

In this programme, The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments explores music associated with angels: the maverick and fallen, as well as the divine. Playing some of the instruments that appear in depictions of angels through the ages, this talented early music ensemble presents traditional tunes, dances, songs and carols in a celebration of these heavenly and occasionally diabolical beings.

Written in 1640 and setting a text after Homer, The Return of Ulysses is typical of Monteverdi’s finest operas, with a moralising prologue, an almost super-human hero, a large cast that includes the gods, the mortals and a number of comic characters, and a score packed with virtuosic writing.

Watched by the gods, Penelope waits on Ithaca for the return of her husband Ulysses from the Trojan Wars. Wooed on all sides by the men of the court, what she doesn’t know is that he’s already home, deposited in the dead of night on a beach by some friendly Phaeacians. Reunited by the gods with his son,
