On behalf of Riverview Town Council, I am happy to present the Summer 2014 Events & Activities Guide. Summer is a great time to get out and explore our community. Take advantage of the many sports and leisure activities, walking trails and open gardens. If you’re more of an indoor person,

there are plenty of wellness classes, arts and theatre shows worth discovering all year long. We are fortunate to have diverse facilities and activities operated by our own municipal staff and by many volunteers who share their time and skills with the community. You’ll find that being active in Riverview is convenient, affordable and never boring.

Town Council takes sports and recreation services seriously because we know they’re important to you and vital for the health of our community. After consultations with the public, local students, seniors, and enthusiastic recreation user groups, we are now ready to examine the cost of building a community wellness centre and revitalizing the Byron Dobson Arena. Both projects are needed to meet the current and future demands on our facilities in Riverview. The long-term benefits of this project will be felt not only by the recreation community but also by our local economy since many businesses rely on the sports tourism industry in our region. You’ll find updates about the community wellness centre and all other Town of Riverview news on our website and the Town’s Facebook and Twitter pages (learn about our different social media channels on page 23 (“get connected info”). It’s easy to stay connected and informed about new plans taking shape in our community.

Whatever your family chooses to do this summer, I hope you make it a happy, healthy and safe season in Riverview.

Ann Seamans,Mayor of Riverview

It is my pleasure to once again welcome you to view another amazing Summer Events and Activity Guide. We have a variety of exciting activities planned for visitors and residents to enjoy this summer and we hope you will use this guide as a tool to learn about the special events taking place throughout Riverview. These program offerings have a profound impact on the well being of our citizens and the health of our community.

As the weather gets warmer and you venture out to enjoy our natural beauty by walking Riverfront Park, biking the paved trail on Gunningsville Boulevard, cooling off at the splash pad, planting in the community garden or sharing a picnic lunch with friends and family during a concert at Caseley Park, we encourage you to take a moment to ensure you and your family are prepared to have a fun and safe experience.

This Guide is full of opportunities for fun, learning and personal development. We invite you to use the Guide as a tool, not only to discover activities of interest for you and your family, but also as a way to make the most of what Riverview has to offer.

Our ongoing investments in parks and playgrounds through such projects as a continued focus upon developing Mill Creek Nature Park, the completion of the Rebecca Avenue play area, as well as improvements to the safety of existing playgrounds are examples of our commitment to improving our community. Additional improvements we are excited to highlight for 2014 are the implementing of the Active Transportation Plan through the installation of bike lanes, safety signage and a related public education program as well as an expansion of the community gardening initiative, all of which will have significant impact upon active and healthy living throughout our Town. We are also hard at work to implement online registration for all of our programs in late 2014.

If you have comments or questions for our recreation team please let us know by visiting our website at townofriverview.ca or by calling 387-2024. We are your partners in the ongoing and lifelong endeavor of active and healthy living.

Keep active, have fun and enjoy our great outdoors!

6 yrs*+CAMPDiscoveryInclusion in recreation is essential for meeting the leisure needs of individuals with special needs. Our leaders work closely with the participant & family to provide an enriching recreation experience in the least restrictive environment.

• This summer program is offered free of charge and is based on a drop-in system. Due to limited staff numbers, we cannot facilitate one-on-one interaction; however we welcome support workers.

“A Great Place to Grow” Community Garden located next to the Coverdale Centre on Runnymeade Road will be expanded this year. Special thanks to Kent, Riverview for donating a garden shed in 2013. Presently, in addition to the shed, there are two raised beds but by late spring the Volunteer Community Garden Committee with support from the Town of Riverview plan on having 50 plots some of which will be raised for easier access. Plots will be approximately 4’ X16’ and the annual fee will be $20. We are still looking for more volunteers to help with the development of this

garden. This includes: committee work, building, maintaining the garden and educational workshops. It is our hope that the Community Garden will be a safe and welcoming place where people will be able to gather and share their knowledge and information. Gardening is a great way to be physically active. For more information on how to become part of this great community initiative please come to our information session on Tuesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at the Riverview Library, 34 Honour House Court or call 387-2024.
