Welcome to the Town of Riverview’s Winter/Spring Events & Activities Guide.

Riverview is a community that offers exceptional indoor and outdoor activities year-round. Together with our many community groups, new events are happening in our town every season.

For winter enthusiasts, Riverview doesn’t disappoint. I encourage everyone to take advantage of our heavy annual snowfall and reconnect with nature. Discover the joy of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, skating on the rink at Winter Wonderland Park, zipping down the sliding hill and having fun in the snow. Join a swim or dance class if you prefer to stay indoors – the options are endless!

These recreational activities are complimented by a variety of festivals and special events, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. All of these factors combine to make Riverview the ideal place to live, work and raise a family.

We welcome and encourage new business. If you are interested in starting a business in Riverview or relocating an existing business, our Economic Development department provides a number of services that may be of assistance or interest to you. For more information, please visit the Doing Business section of our website.

Sincerely,

Ann Seamans,Mayor of Riverview

We are blessed to be living in such a beautiful and active community that provides such a wide variety of leisure opportunities. Winter is a magical time in Riverview to be outdoors, with an abundance of fresh air, excellent cross country skiing and walking trails, thrilling opportunities for sledding and outdoor skating, and wonderful special events including Winter Carnival. There are also many quality indoor offerings such as hockey, figure skating, and ringette.

The 2015 Winter/Spring Town of Riverview Events & Activity Guide provide a wide range of activities for all interests, ages and abilities. From active and passive, individual and group, indoor and outdoor, organized and unstructured; there is something for everyone. An exciting aspect of registering for programs this year is the choice to do it online, from the comfort of your home. We have been working hard to provide you with a modern, effective and convenient way to register for our programs and services. We hope you will become familiar with the new process.

One of the many positive aspects of living in Riverview is the abundance of year round recreation opportunities. I jog throughout Riverview year round, and I can be often found walking and running with Timber, our family husky dog, through the trails and along Riverfront Park. I also bicycle most of the year, kayak and canoe when I can, and hike areas around the tri community area including the Dobson Trail and the two nearby National parks. I can hardly wait for the first snows to cross country ski at Mill Creek Park.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Relations Department consists of a dynamic team of professionals. We are always interested in hearing from you with your suggestions for new or improved services. As we continue to grow as an active and vibrant community, your participation is crucial.

I encourage you to get outdoors and explore what Riverview has to offer you and your family.

Lace up your skates, dust off that toboggan and enjoy some outdoor winter fun! Located on Quinn Court (off Gunningsville Blvd), Winter Wonderland Park is home to Riverview’s famous sliding hill, which will bustle with activity when the snow comes to town. The sliding hill is approximately 50 feet high and provides hours of family fun and exercise sliding and snowboarding. You’ll find even more thrills on the outdoor rink, next to the sliding hill and parking lot. The park area was named in a public contest held during 2014 Winter Carnival. There is no charge to use the sliding hill or outdoor rink.

For safety reasons, the sliding hill is closed during certain weather conditions. Please obey the locked gate and stay off the hill when it’s closed. Find updates on the ‘Cancellations’ page of our website under ‘Things to Do.’ Please note that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the hill at any time (i.e. snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, four-wheelers, etc.)

Located at 50 Vernon Ave. (next to Bridgedale Community Centre) Season memberships available for family, singles or students. For more information, call Weldon Lewis at 386-6947

Tips for Helping Families Prevent Brain Injuryl Brain injuries are life-

changing and can be serious. Children and youth can suffer more severe effects, as their brains are still developing.

l 30% of brain injuries in Canada are suffered by children and youth. Many of these injuries happen while participating in sports and other recreational activities.

l It is estimated 90% of all injuries are preventable.

l Several studies suggest that wearing a properly-fitted helmet can greatly reduce the risk and severity of brain injury. For example, bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of brain injury up to 88% for everyone.

Municipal services

Did you know?l The Town keeps 130 km of streets

and 38 km of sidewalks and trails free of snow and ice.

l For an average Maritime storm, it takes between 4-5 hours to plow and salt the entire town once.

l Salt and sand are spread in combination to increase traction when temperatures fall. Always drive with caution and be mindful of changing road conditions.

l More than 700 fire hydrants are cleared as needed after every storm. You can help by keeping the hydrant nearest to your home free of ice and snow.

l In addition to plowing, Public Works crews reduce high snow piles at intersections, check for obstructed stop signs, steam thaw frozen culverts and fix water main breaks which become more frequent when the temperature dips.
