WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL

I can’t believe it’s finally here.

We’ve worked hard to get ourselves back up North.

There’s been many late nights and long days leading up to this year’s festival -- carving out campsites, cobbing ovens in a lightning storm, working on the cabin for our food vendors. Before that - working on grants; attending workshops and conferences. Posters and graphics with Yan o’Piebird (many many thanks go to this kind talented person). In the end, this year’s festival would not have happened without our members who are now numbering more than 80. Wow. Makes me cry a little. Please renew your memberships in October and let’s keep this going!

One member, Kevin Cote, became our lead groundskeeper. This “pioneer of the future” moved out here full-time and has worked every day for sometime now. Others have been out every weekend. Some only once but the hand and help they gave happened at the right time and moved the work forward. Mike came from Hamilton and Dan and Ina from Montreal. Dan C. always lending a truck or a sauna or a generator - thanks for the fire pits. This year has been encouraging. Whenever there has been a need someone has stepped in to keep things going.

There’s been some sweet nights by the Sturgeon River - mistaking fireflies for flashlights, hearing partridge beats and owl hoots, and having a sauna in the Boler at the end of a hard day’s work along with a cool refreshing jump into the Sturgeon.

We’re quite happy that Fishers’ Paradise has agreed to host the festival and we hope to continue a very long relationship with them in this little piece of paradise. Chris and Julie were Toronto based before they decided to head North to raise their family. You’ll see their three children’s names as you walk along the trails -- Linden’s Lane, Paulie’s Path, and Willow’s Way. This property is their home and we’ve been invited to share it for the weekend. Enjoy and please treat it well so that Fishers’ Paradise and R&S may grow together!

River and Sky Arts in the Woods incorporated as a not-for-profit last year and is run by a board of 13 super generous and kind and creative individuals. We have no paid staff. We are fortunate to be funded and advised by Heritage Canada, Ontario Arts Council along with Community Economic Partners’ Neil Fox - who brought Fishers’ Paradise and R&S together to meet. Special thanks to the other non-profits that help us out - Eat Local Sudbury, ReThink Green, Myths and Mirrors, and the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals as well (we are their newest member!). We hope to partner with many more in the years to come.

Thanks to Lara and Sebastian and Quinn for believing in this and working so hard along with me. I know I am crazy but it is amazing what we can do when we all work together.

Enjoy the show and the beach and each other!

Peter Zwarich, Festival Director

HAPPy CAMPERS

OUTDOOR ADVENTURESLaurentian University’s Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program will provide a plethora of camping and outdoor skills and programs at the festival: tarpology 101, don’t lose your canoe off your roof, and who needs matches to light fires... to name a few. Also, free canoe use will be available throughout the weekend.

FAMILy ZONE SATURDAY, 10:30 AM To noonFamilies are not allowed outside the designated Family Zone. Just kidding. The Family Zone is located beside the main stage and will host various kids games and fun activities for the whole family.

Q&ACan I start a fire? Good question. With fire bans in effect over much of the north this summer, stay tuned: announcements will be made at the festival. Be sure to have water standing by if you need to douse the fire in an emergency. Smokers, be very careful. It’s really dry out here. Be sure to butt out safely. The Northeast Regional Forest Fire Information Hotline is 1-866-357-8422.

Can I swim? Can you? If so, go for it! If not, then take care. Our beach area is unsupervised and the Sturgeon River has a mild current. You can also feel free to jump in the Oxbow beside the main stage too, if you want to cool off.

What about smoking? You’re an adult. Do what you want, but please, don’t teach kids how to smoke. That’s just not cool. Discretion is always appreciated. Make sure your butts are well put out and disposed of properly.

Woof? Dogs are awesome but need to be on a leash. Please don’t bring them directly in front of the main stage or on the family beach. There is a Dog Zone!

Where can I pee and poo? Outhouses and blue portable toilets.

Where can I wash my body? There are no shower facilities this year. If you want to freshen up, go for a swim! Don’t use soap or shampoo in the river! That’s just not cool. We’re not in the 50’s anymore. Biodegradable soap is your new best friend.

What if I see a bear? You’re in the middle of the woods. This land is their land. Don’t leave any food out. Clean dirty dishes. Back away slowly. So far, none have been spotted on the property.

Where’s the closest medical facility? West Nipissing Community Health Centre, 145 Main Street, Sturgeon Falls. It has an emergency department. It’s about a 25 minute drive. St. John Ambulance is also on site at the festival, ready to help out.

Where’s the closest place to buy booze? Turn left as you leave the property and 9 kms will take you to the LCBO in River Valley. River Valley also has a chip stand. Or turn right, and about 6 kms will take you to Field’s LCBO in its general store. You can buy cake at the store too!

Can I have glass bottles? Please avoid glass. Pour it into a cup and you’re gold. Absolutely no glass will be permitted near the main stage.

What do I do with this program once the festival is done? Keep it as a souvenir, recycle it or burn it.

FARAWAy NEIgHBOURS (North Bay, oN) 8:00 PMFaraway Neighbours is an ambient folk trio from North Bay taking a page or two from influences like Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, and Grizzly Bear. ShotGUn JImmIE (Sackville, NB) 9:00 PMShotgun Jimmie comes from the heart of the heart of New Brunswick. He plays from the heart of his heart. Your ears perk up and he starts singing about all his friends, who remind you of all your friends. His words are full of carefree consideration. He is a performer whose pronunciation of the word ‘stuff’ can be transcendent.

John K. SAmSon (WiNNiPeg, MB) 10:00 PMIf one were to make a list of Canada’s greatest songwriters, John K. Samson could be near the top. Certainly, in a generation, there are few who can compare. Known for his work leading the Weakerthans, JKS stepped into the spotlight on his own in 2012 with ‘Provincial’, a record of substantial yet delicate proportions. Wry and clever but always accessible, we are honoured to present John K. Samson on the River and Sky stage.

ShRED KELLy (FerNie, Bc) 11:30 PMShred Kelly is a formulation of friends and foot stompin’ good times born in British Columbia’s East Kootenay area. The five-piece band is best known for mixing clawhammer banjo riffs that tear the fabric of space and time with high voltage guitars, fierce drums, and hauntingly sweet harmonies to produce a sound that has been properly coined “Stoke Folk”.

hARLAn PEPPER (haMiltoN, oN) MidNightHarlan Pepper channel the ghosts of long-gone AM car radios and haunting the dusty aisles of small town vinyl record bins. Their sound conjures up a session where Gram Parsons, Buck Owens and Hank Williams pay a Basement Tapes visit to sit in with contemporaries like Joel Plaskett and Jeff Tweedy. Expect a set that rolls along with the top down.

CoASt REDwooD (SudBury, oN) 1 PMCoast Redwood’s music is heavy on guitars, but not necessarily heavy. Occasionally pretty, but never prissy, with lots of room for pushing each other around and one-upmanship. Their live show is known for high energy hooliganism, guitar solos and fights, dancing crowds, and much spilled milk.

thE mEttAPhoRS (North Bay, oN) 2 PMThe Mettaphors combine warm rustic accompaniment with Joni Mitchell-esque vocals that can make the coldest winter’s night feel like a sunny Summer day at the beach.

LIttLE SIR ECho (SudBury, oN) 3 PMLittle Sir Echo is a sonic blast of 50’s guitar instrumentals, 60’s surf-rock and music inspired by old Spiderman cartoons. Bring your comic books, vintage swim trunks, and sunscreen.

MAIN STAgE

honhEEhonhEE (MoNtreal, PQ) 7:00 PMMontreal’s Honheehonhee make contagious whooping rock with an incurable fervor. Amazingly energetic and inspiring, think Los Campesinos, Born Ruffians, with a sprinkle of Hooded Fang. The perfect jump start to Saturday night.

LIbRARy VoICES (regiNa, Sk) 8:00 PMLibrary Voices could very well be the Dark Knight of indie rock. At every turn they’ve been met with curses of mythical proportions: stolen gear, floods, fires, and yet, they refuse to let anything bring them down. One of Sudbury’s favourite acts over the years, Library Voices is sure to impress with their energetic sound and intelligent songwriting.

yoUnG GALAxy (vaNcouver, Bc/MoNtreal, PQ) 9:00 PMYoung Galaxy, a hard working, hard rocking band from Montreal are sure to impress this summer at R&S. Their critically acclaimed breakthrough album, “Shapeshifting” was listed for a Polaris Music Prize in 2011- and appeared on numerous ‘album of the year’ lists. Cutting edge electronica combines with dreamy space pop, they will satisfy whether you’re fishing out on the grass or dancing stage-side.

hoLLERADo (ottaWa, oN) 10:00 PMThey’ve become one of the most lovable groups on the planet thanks to their insanely catchy and energetic guitar pop, boundless creativity and a relentless DIY approach. Starting from the humblest beginnings as a moving company called Haulerado in 2006, the charismatic band drew favourable comparisons to Supergrass, Stephen Malkmus, and Weezer before being hand-picked by Jack White for opening duties. Save a little energy during the day for this set.

CAMPFIRE

AIR QUotES (SudBury, oN) 11:20 PMAir Quotes is a multidisciplinary performance incorporating audience participation with edited video, prepared soundscapes and live music. The perfect beginning to a long dark night in the forest.

moon KInG (toroNto, oN) 11:45 PMDaniel Woodhead and Maddy Wilde, use a variety of instruments including a 12-string guitar, surf guitar and drums to produce their “electronic-folk” sound. Woodhead describes their music as “fast and upbeat but it is layered with textured vocals- soft with a loud underbelly.”

PIStoL GEoRGE wARREn (SudBury, oN) 12:30 aMPistol George Warren groove like Motown in its prime and if you give em a sniff you’ll catch a wif of some old Nashville. (this writer is not to be held accountable for any incidents stemming from smelling of the band.) This is their second year at R&S and you’ll find PGW nice and cozy at the campfire set.

GREAt AUnt IDA (vaNcouver, Bc/toroNto, oN) 1:00 PMGreat Aunt Ida might not necessarily be related to you, but that’s okay. If she is, you’re a lucky person indeed. A lovely voice, nimble fingers and a knack for writing songs that are both quiet, quirky, sometimes a little bouncy and always thoroughly captivating.

ChAD VAnGAALEn (calgary, aB) 2:00 PMOnce or twice in a generation, a Canadian artist comes along that transcends his peers - one that in a seemingly effortless way reaches brilliance. Chad Vangaalen is one such artist- equally gifted in the visual arts as music, his work seems to have emerged from another temporal plane. Magical, enlightened, unorthodox, and yet accessible to any and all, River and Sky is at long last, honoured to present Chad Vangaalen.
