The crisp fall air and the changing colors caught my grandson Noah’s attention yesterday. He climbed up on the wall so that he could examine the colored crepe myrtle leaves. “They weren’t like that yesterday! Now they are red and orange. Grandma, have you seen what has happened?” Change is always happening. Most things don’t stay the same and there are so many changes in God’s world, that we often miss seeing them in all their glory. It is with gratitude that we honor the officers completing their terms of service: Carrie Garrett, Andrea Curry, Annette Gaines, Hilde Winston, and Joyce Lolohea Latu. Each woman will continue their commitment to service in the name of Christ. We’re starting this fall with new officers on our UMW Dis-trict leadership team. What a dream team they are! We experienced a time of sharing in a retreat led by the Reverend Karen Gardner. We stand together, ready for what may come with a closer knowledge of the God given gifts and talents of each member. Please welcome Rosie Guadarrama, Annie Solomon, Faye Coates, Gretel Noble, and Paulette Bruggeman. You can get to know them through their articles in River Talk. You have a very strong dedicated leadership team who is here to help you in any way. We will inform you of events, resources to assist your studies, and strive to maintain contact with you throughout the year. We are honored when invited to your meetings as a speaker or a guest. Feel free to call or email me with any question or suggestion you may have.

Our UMW leadership training event is January 18, 2014, at the Temecula UMC. Take a few minutes today to mark this date on your cal-endar for January and plan to publicize the event at your local organization. Look for a personal invitation from your counterpart in mid December. We all had the opportunity for training from our conference leaders and are now eager to share our information with you. In addition to specific training for leadership, we will offer UMW 101, a presentation for all. It is an overview of UMW that you won’t want to miss! The changing of the seasons marks a rich time of cele-brations. May the Lord Jesus come into all our hearts at this time of gratitude and love. I pray that the Lord Jesus can fill the emptiness and wanting within all of us so that we can say, “Come into my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for Thee.” Blessings and peace, Mary Hawkins Riverside District President [email protected] 909-793-5171

River Talk 3 November 2013

I am a retired educator of 46 years (Alabama, North Carolina, and California) in Elementary and Middle Schools, now living in Twentynine Palms, with an origin from Montgomery, Alabama. I was taught early in my childhood by my father (an AME Zion minister) that all humans are significant. Spiritual development and educational growth have been instru-mental in shaping my philosophy about Human Rights for "all". My advocacy for "all" led to being elected as the Human Rights chairperson and president of my local teachers' association. These positions permitted me the ability to present by-law changes that created opportunities and resources for children, youth, and women in the schools.

Later, I became involved in the UMC of Twentynine Palms. After attending for a few months I was invited to a Women's group meeting. At this meeting, the mission and vision were shared in great detail. The women were so passionate about living the vision. It motivated me to acquire more information about United Methodist Women, to join the group, and to become an active member. I have held several positions in my local unit. Presently I serve as vice president. I look forward to serving the Riverside District United Methodist Women in this capacity. Annie H. Solomon 760- 221-6650 [email protected]

Vice-President

Greetings to all, Thank you to the presidents and secretaries who have sent their 2014 unit officers. Continue to send those lists as soon as possible. I know some of you have said that your officers won’t be installed until December, but I do need the name of your president right away so she can be included in the conference directory. I think I have emailed or mailed forms to all of you. If I missed your unit, please let me know. For those churches without UMW units, I will be contacting the

church for a contact person. I am looking forward to officer training in January. I thank God for each of you. Peace, Janyth Dison 1558 E. Citrus, Redlands, CA 92374 Phone: (909) 792-8969 Email: [email protected]

Let’s connect: we are as strong as our helping hands.

Dear Sisters in Christ: What a pleasure to be back on the District Team as the Membership Coordinator. Most of you remember me as the previous District Treasurer. In my personal life taking a two year sabbatical from the team allowed me to finish my studies in Ayurveda. I now serve as an Ayurveda practitioner, Reiki Master and Yoga Instructor and serve as Chair for the Claremont Wellness Professionals. I made history this year as the first deaconess to become an alumni of CLSC (Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle), the oldest reading group in the United States. Our honoree was Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and it was indeed an honor to have her physi-cally there with us. With God’s grace I will move up a step and join the Seven Seas in 2014. I also finished my credentials and now stand before you as a Certified Lay Minister. This year I had the honor of visiting India twice, four weeks in January to specialize in Panchakarma (Ayurveda) and four weeks in June to learn Jainism. While 2014 is starting slow, I am scheduled to take an Ubuntu (UMW) group to Costa Rica in September 2015; please join me if you are able. As you recall I am a Deaconess and urge everyone who knits/crochets to make baby blankets and/or shawls for

Assembly this April in Louisville, KY. I will pick them up when I visit you. I am still involved in Women4Women and continue to make Peace Pals for the children around the world. Please call upon me to visit your units/organizations to assist with organizing or reorganizing, or simply to reconnect. I urge you to assist me with 100% compliance and com-plete the membership report form (on page 22) by the end of the year, but at the latest by January 15

th. I am

only as efficient as you allow me to be and together we will shine with all the colors of the rainbow. All hands in! Praises for our abundance and blessings for peace and love, Deaconess Rosie Guadarrama [email protected] (H) 909-981-3720 (Cell/text) 909-908-4621

All too soon another year is coming to an end and with that comes the accountability regarding how much we fulfilled our purpose this past year. It is time to fill out and send in the "Is Your Church a Mission Today Unit?" form. The 2013 form is attached in this newsletter, on pages 17 and 18. If you have not already done it on the 2012 form it is not too late. The 2013 Forms are due December 15, 2013. Send the completed forms to me. One change that you should be aware of is that the title Mission Coordinator for Education & Interpretation is now simply Mission Education Coordinator. We need to edu-cate ourselves about the opportunities for missions out there so that we can pass these on to our members and encourage them to get involved in working in our Lord's vineyard. The Fall celebration on October 26, 2013 was a big suc- cess. Our past Bishop, Mary Ann Swenson, reminded us of the power of sisterhood, which was what empowered

the United Methodist Women to be the #2 women's or-ganization. We need one another to become missionary churches and units. We are to practice our love for Christ in our everyday life. As the year draws to a close, let us think of how we will reach out to those in need and support the four Mission projects in the CAL-PAC confer-ence. There are a lot of resources on our website: www.umwmissionresources.org for our growth and spiri-tual development. May God bless you during this Holiday season. I am looking forward to seeing you at the training session in January 2014. Sophia Blankson Mission Education Coordinator 909-822-8597 [email protected]

Mission Education

Hello! Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Paulette Bruggeman and I am a member of the First United Methodist Church of Riverside (FUMCOR). I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother to a wonderful family. My husband and I were both born and raised in the Christian faith. While raising our three girls I held office positions that ranged from Receptionist to Purchasing Agent. Full time work and busy schedules kept us from attending church on a regular basis, but mostly it was our internal struggle in finding a church that we could all agree upon. Even so, God has always been in our everyday lives. The girls are grown with children of their own and it’s been almost 4 years ago that my husband and I joined FUMCOR where we were warmly welcomed and feel very much a part of God’s family there.

I believe that prayer and education are both vital in one’s faith journey, but service is also a very important part. So, when I was asked to accept the position of District Program Resource Coordinator for the Riverside District I felt God was providing an opportunity for me to serve Him and I said “Yes”. The books that will be available in the 2014 Catalog give us a wonderful opportunity to educate ourselves to the needs of others and strengthen our relationship with God. I look forward to meeting each of the Local Program Re-source persons in the Riverside District this coming Janu-ary and with assisting them during the next 2 years with their Reading Program. Greetings to All, As a district officer, I am always very appreciative of all the effort and hard work that the local unit does to host a district event. And for our Annual Meeting on September 28 at Victorville UMC, many thanks for such a wonderful job by Carolyn Richardson as our registrar and the United Methodist Men for a delicious spaghetti luncheon! Kudos to all of the ladies of the Victorville UMW unit. It was good to see and talk to so many of you at the meeting. At lunch, I was sitting at the table that included Dorothy Smith, co-president of Temecula UMW, who is hosting the Leadership Training Event in January 2014, and Annie Solomon, the new VP of RD UMW. Both of them were born in Alabama, and so was I. Doro-thy attended the same college as I did (Tuskegee Uni-versity), had the same major as I did (nursing), and is a member of the same sorority as I am (Delta Sigma Theta) and was in Washington, D.C. in July for the 100

th

year anniversary! Annie’s sister lives in Montgomery, AL and is also a member of my sorority. My sister lives in Montgomery, is a member of my sorority and she and Annie’s sister are members of the same chapter! What a small, small world! The RD UMW 2014 Budget and pledge to Cal-Pac Con-ference UMW were approved. Both are included in this issue of River Talk. We are now in the fourth and final quarter of the fiscal year. There are several active units that have not given toward our 2013 pledge of $70,000. Please remember that all money (Mission Giving and Designated Gifts) needs to be submitted to your district treasurer by No-vember 30. Please mark your calendar with this date. And remember to make all checks payable to Riverside

District UMW. A remittance form must be submitted with all funds. To become a 5 Star Unit, contributions to all five (5) channels of Missing Giving must be met. Do-nations to local organizations should be mailed directly to the organizations. Please see Report on Mission Giv-ing in this issue of River Talk. Total amount of giving is $42,106.32. We need $27,893.68 to meet our pledge of $70,000.00. Please continue to give! Many thanks to the 37 units/individuals who donated $1,267.45 for the Can-dle of Commitment. Claremont UMW was the highest donor of our district ($448.50) and of all the 8 districts, Riverside District had the highest number of donors and donated the most money. Great job! Reminder: All local units need to submit a yearly audit to the district treasurer. I have included an audit form (Schedule of Cash Activities), page 9, and 2013 Local Unit Annual (End of Year) Treasurer’s Report, page 8, in this issue of River Talk. Please send these forms to me. And starting January 1, 2014, please send all monies to incoming Treasurer Gretel Noble. This is my final article as your district treasurer. I have enjoyed serving you and the Riverside District for the past 4 years in the positions as MC of MNO and treas-urer. I will see you at our 2014 spring meeting. Until then, take care and enjoy the holidays! Peace, love and God’s blessings, Annette Osborne Gaines, Treasurer (outgoing) Email: [email protected] Phone: 909-792-2385

Hello again, It was great seeing many of you at Westwood UMC for the Annual Celebration. It was a wonderful day starting with our district officer training and then continuing on with the celebration with our past and present Bishops, Mary Ann Swenson and Minerva Carcaño. We had worked hard the months preceding September to have the slate ready for the election, and I am glad to say it is done! We still are hoping to fix the election procedure to get the correct officers elected in the correct odd or even year as stated in our standing rules. We had a few setbacks, but are determined to get it right!

So hope to see you at the Leadership Training at Temecula UMC January 18. Happy Trails and God Bless, Gayle Gebhart 760-936-9840 [email protected]

Thanks to the many UMW organizations that have kept the hospital well supplied with small stuffed animals! Saint Paul/Del Rosa brought a generous bag filled with bears for the needs of the hospital. At our last general meeting, Ron Van Winkle spoke about his early involvement in the start of the Ronald McDon-ald Homes. His own son was seriously ill and in need of hospital care for over more than a three year period. One parent always spent the night in his room on an uncomfortable somewhat reclining chair covered in vinyl. His son recovered and at the end of this stressful time, Ronald McDonald homes became a reality for families whose chil-dren are critically ill. Families can be near their loved one and available at a minutes’ notice to hurry to the hospital as needed. Our next general meeting and installation of the Auxiliary board will be January 27th, 2014. Our own chaplain the Reverend Brenda Simmons will share her experiences. The Methodist Hospital of Arcadia is one of two teaching facilities that offer hands on training for chaplains. Mark your calendar today and plan to join us at the Methodist Hospital. My life started in St. Louis. Missouri. I was raised in east St. Louis, Illinois, just across the river. Our family moved to Detroit, Michigan where I went to high school and Wayne University. In 1960 I got married and was the wife of the late Daniel R. Coates, Jr., the love of my life for 52 years. He was in the Air Force and we were fortu-nate to live in Europe for seven years. I continued my music studies and performed in operas as a mezzo so-prano. I was the number one soloist at the chapel on every base where we were stationed. I have two sons, Daniel R. Coates, III, and Dr. Derrick C. Coates. I am blessed with four grandchildren, two grand-daughters and two grandsons. One son was born in Germany, and the other was born at Andrews Air Force Base. While we were stationed at Andrews, I sang in the White House for President Lyndon Johnson. Before moving to Rialto, our base was the Pentagon. I was appointed the official soloist for the city of Rialto by the mayor and city council. I was also the first woman of color to be elected president of the Federated Woman’s Club of Rialto. After settling in Rialto, I quickly became a fighter for my children……and for the children whose parents were not visible. I was not afraid to speak for justice at every op-portunity. I have always tried to do God’s will and I be-lieve that God led me to follow this path. I have been a United Methodist for 38 years. During

those years I have served in many varied roles within the church, UMW, and Church Women United, where I served at the state level as Spiritual Growth Leader. In the Riverside District I have served in several leadership roles. I am the past president and current vice president of our local UMW organization. I am thrilled to be coming back to the Riverside District Leadership team having previously served both as a Conference and District offi-cer through mission education. I am exceedingly happy to have been asked to chair Spiritual Growth, because the call is deep in my heart! This helps others and it helps me to express my spirituality. Feel free to call me at any time and I will be there for you. I feel that we are helping each other on our spiritual journey. I had been the caregiver for my husband for a long time. Getting back into church leadership has done much to relieve the pain and grief that I still feel. God is good! He will lift our burdens and care for us. It is my prayer that we all can do God’s work and love each other as Christ loves us. Yours in Christ, Faye Coates 909-820-0935

From UMCOR website:

November 11, 2013—The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) approved an emergency grant in

response to Super Typhoon Haiyan, a category 5 storm, which barreled through the Philippines on Friday, No-

vember 8.

The $97,000 grant will provide emergency food, water, and water purification tablets to 7,500 individuals (or

1,500 families) in Tacloban City, Leyte Province, an area worst hit by the typhoon. To ensure that food is deliv-

ered in a timely fashion, it has been UMCOR’s strategy to purchase food locally to support local economies, and

provide culturally-appropriate food to those who lack ready access in the aftermath of a disaster.

UMCOR funding will also build the capacity of local UMCOR Philippines’ staff and volunteers for meeting

emergency needs. In the coming days, UMCOR will be conducting needs assessments and planning additional

assistance, including material assistance through the UMCOR Relief-Supply Network.
