Melissa Mortenson is the writer behind the Polka Dot Chair blog (www.polkadotchair.com). She is the mother of three who grew up in Salt Lake City but is now happy to call Kentucky home.

Her blog, the Polka Dot Chair is starting its seventh year of sharing craft and sewing ideas with readers.

She attended BYU majoring in Biology. While in college she was introduced to Art and Design by her husband

who was at the time an Industrial Design major. Even though she never changed her major, she began taking Art classes at BYU and found that she had a great love for color and design.

Melissa’s projects have been featured on numerous craft and lifestyle websites, and has had her work published in three books. She is the author of “Project Teen: 21 Handmade Gifts Your Teens with Actually Love”.

About Michelle GolightlyFrom a young age Dad taught me, “You can do ANYTHING you put your mind to, Michelle.” For some reason I believed him. I began sewing at the age of 8. By 5th grade I was making most of my clothes and designing my own clothes in 6th grade. The scratch paper for my ACT college entry test was filled with drawings of my prom dress I was creating for the next weekend.

After marring I began sewing for others: curtains, pillows, prom and wedding dresses. In the middle of the night I watched Princess Diana walk down the isle of St Paul’s Cathedral in a wedding gown with the biggest sleeves I had ever seen. With Diana inspired enthusiasm I designed equally big sleeves on my very next wedding dress. It was fantastic. Brides continue to challenge me with pictures of their dream gowns for recreation. I am inspired by fine fabrics, lace, beading, and color.

Transitioning into designing printed patterns was seamless. Since 2011 I self-published twelve patterns covering a diverse cross section: clutches, organizers, computer and iPad cases, dresses and coats for women and tweens, and even a formal/wedding dress. My first pattern, Four Funky and Fabulous Organizers, was unique enough that Patchwork Spezial magazine published it in

German. In 2014 Bernina Virtual Clubs chose to use my Sweet Clutches pattern for one of their featured pattern projects. My current project is a book of 20 bag patterns from wallets to totes with backpacks and clutches. The bags will feature unique hardware and accent skills. While sleeping, I construct each project step by step, carefully solving problems in my mind before even beginning to sew. In my pattern layout I address some of the traditional pattern weaknesses that decades of experience have had

me frustrated. I simplify and teach skills in each pattern.

I am a wife, mother of 5, and a grandmother of 10. Living in the mountains of Utah is a creative environment where I sew, babysit, hike, play and teach piano professionally. I studied music, humanities, and history in Vienna where I witnessed some of the most magnificent operas written. I performed in parks and recital halls around Europe and Asia. I stood in front of the Rembrandt portraits in the Louvre more than a dozen times. I marvel at the accomplishments of artists who extend their minds and create wonders. I am inspired by ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
