Ruger quietly announced the temporary discontinuation of

its rotary-magazine, bolt-action rifle line in September 2016 to in-clude all 77/22, 77/44, 77/17 and 77/357 variants. This unique se-ries dates back to the 1984 intro-duction of the 77/22R and RS .22 rimfires, the first bolt actions to incorporate the use of the Ruger 10/22 magazine. Beyond appro-priately designed bolts and maga-zines, these rifles closely represent scaled-down versions of the orig-inal M77 centerfire rifle from the late 1960s.

In Rifle No. 291 (March/April, 2017), this column was used to cover the surprising production halt. Difficulties were encountered at the time in regard to current, de-tailed information, likely resulting from Ruger planning several sig-nificant staffing changes. This in-cluded the upcoming retirement of the company’s CEO and resultant changes in upper management, plus further moves in its public re-lations staff. All of this was played out this year about the time April turned into May.

As this is written in July, how-ever, the good news is several of these rifles have been put back into production for an unspecified period of time. The following mod-els supposedly are – or soon will

be – on dealers’ racks by the time this issue is published.

• 77/17 .17 Hornet, stainless steel barreled action, laminated stock, 24-inch barrel

• 77/17 .17 Winchester Super Mag-num (WSM), stainless steel, walnut stock, 24-inch barrel

• 77/22 .22 Hornet, blued steel, walnut stock, 20-inch barrel

• 77/22 .22 Hornet, stainless steel, laminated stock , 24-inch barrel

• 77/357 .357 Magnum, brushed stainless, synthetic stock, 18.5-inch barrel

• 77/44 .44 Remington Magnum; blued steel with walnut stock, matte finish with synthetic stock or brushed stainless with synthetic stock; 18.5-inch barrel

While the above is significant news, note there is no mention of

77/22 .22-caliber rimfire or 77/17 .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) offerings. A source at Ruger re-cently indicated that when news spread of the discontinuance of the 33-year-old, bolt-action de-sign, fans of the rifles were up-set enough – in fact, “outraged at first” – that the rifles listed above were put back into production, and an announcement was made July 2017. As for the possibility of .17 HMR, .22 Long Rifle (LR) and .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) models being produced in the near future, there was no earmarked date, but “the rimfire cartridges are currently being con-sidered.” All of this begged a final question: Had changes been made to the relaunched rifles listed above? “No,” I was told, “they are being made with the same parts.”

When introducing new car-tridges, Hornady Manufacturing has had a long partnership with Ruger, and the latter’s 77/17 was perhaps the first walnut-stocked rifle available to accommodate the .17 HMR and the more recent cen-terfire .17 Hornet, a modernized (altered case shape, new powders and bullets) version of the old .17 Ackley Hornet from the 1950s. Still more recent is the Ruger 77/17 .17

WSM, a 2013 cartridge developed by Winchester Ammunition and its industrial impact tools division.

Having shot all of these car-tridges in bolt actions, they have proven to be accurate from sev-eral Ruger and Savage rifles, but the only one I kept is a Ruger .17 Hornet with a 24-inch barrel. Even with its 5-pound factory trigger pull, if I do my part, it will group 10 shots under an inch at 100 yards when shot from a bench using Hornady 20-grain V-MAX Super-formance Varmint factory loads that provide an average velocity of 3,755 fps as chronographed 10 feet from the rifle’s muzzle. That’s about as fast as the cartridge gets.

Whether Ruger expands the rotary-magazine, bolt-rifle line by bringing back the .17- and .22-cal-iber versions depends largely on what the shooting public requests. I suspect now, as was the case last fall, the Ruger American Rimfire rifle is still selling well enough that it’s using up a lot of the com-pany’s time and energy. If rimfire fans prefer a classier rifle with a nicely shaped hardwood stock, read on.

CZ’S 455 VarmInt .17 HmrCZ sporting rifles built in the

Czech Republic began showing up in the U.S. in noteworthy num-bers in the 1990s, thanks to a few intrepid importers. By the end of that decade, Česká zbrojovka, Uherský Brod recognized the vast marketing potential for its guns in the U.S. and launched its own importation subsidiary, CZ-USA, first located in California then moved to Kansas City, Kan-sas. Since then, American shoot-ers have grown quite fond of CZ rifles, including the Model 455 Var-mint.

The rifle was introduced in 2012 as a new rimfire option as the company was in the middle of phasing out its Model 452 rim-fire rifles, the origin of which (the Model 451, apparently built as a military training rifle under the duress of war) dates back to the early 1940s. There is currently one Model 452 listed in CZ’s catalog,

a left-handed rifle of limited pro-duction.

At first glance, the Models 452 and 455 appear nearly identical, though there are two notable dif-ferences: The 452 barreled action is held to the stock with a sin-gle screw located roughly in the center of the bottom metal while the 455 has screws at both the front and rear of the receiver. Secondly, 455 rifles feature user- interchangeable barrels. The 455 Varmint test rifle’s heavy .17 HMR

Much like Ruger, CZ-USA has had a strong relationship with Hornady, quickly introducing rifles chambered for various cartridges such as the .17 Hornet, .204 Ru-ger, .17 HMR and .17 Mach2. CZ currently lists more than a dozen

barrel (.860 inch in diameter) can be swapped out with a .22 LR or .22 WMR sporter barrel and proper maga-zine. Unlike the 452’s threaded bar-rel, 455 barrels are cut to provide a push fit into the receiver and are properly headspaced and held in place with screws. Stocks for the 455 are also interchangeable and have been covered in this maga-zine. (Rifle No. 283, “CZ 455 Amer-ican,” November/December, 2015.)

rifle options for the first three car-tridges but none for the .17 Mach2, which never became as popular as the cartridges preceding it.

The Model 455 Varmint rifle is quite a looker with a nicely blued barreled action and attractive stock of dark, Turkish walnut. The forend is wide enough for bench shooting, and its grip is nicely checkered. It was requested to test several current CCI and Fed-eral .17 HMR loads. Before it was fired for accuracy, its trigger pull was weighed with a Lyman digital scale that revealed an average of 3 pounds, 1.6 ounces. Pull weight can be adjusted, and doing so may have improved the group sizes listed in the accompanying table. It appears appropriate, however, to review rifles for accuracy be-fore adjusting trigger pull weight, for it seems to me most factory rifles, especially rimfires, are rarely disassembled – even more rarely are factory rimfire triggers adjusted.

With a Weaver T-Series 24x 40mm AO scope that features a fine reticle with a 1⁄8-MOA dot, the rifle shot well enough from a por-table shooting bench and sand-bags. As can be seen in the table, the loads tried provided good ac-curacy and velocity, but just like any other rimfire or centerfire rifle, this 455 Varmint shot smaller groups with some loads than it did with others. In fact, CCI’s 20-grain FMJ loads were the only load of the five tested that have been omit-ted from the table, because every third cartridge or so failed to ex-tract from the rifle. There were no problems whatsoever with the four other loads listed.

Having heard conflicting stories regarding exactly who first devel-oped a .17-caliber magnum rimfire cartridge, it is appropriate to say that any development preceding the .17 HMR died on the vine with no commercial viability.

One known example includes the .17 Magnum Rimfire, or .17 FMR, Federal Cartridge was tinkering with in the early 1990s. There

is a short reference to this car- tridge in Layne Simpson’s 1992 Gun Digest “Rifle Review” column. The cartridge was also covered about the same time in Shoot-ing Times by Rick Jamison. Hav-ing known them both for about 16 years, conversations revealed that Federal did take a run at it with no apparently beneficial outcome. This was largely due to inefficient powders available at the time. Al-len Jones, who retired from CCI/Speer’s development engineer-ing department some years ago, also said CCI was, to some extent, “evaluating the idea” of a .17 rimfire magnum, citing several manufac-turing difficulties involved in mass producing rimfire ammunition, not the least of which is powder bridg-ing. Take a .22 WMR case and neck it down to accommodate a .17-cali-ber bullet, and bridging of the pow-ders available at the time became an even greater difficulty to deal with.

Now fast-forward about a de-cade, to when Hornady ballistician

Dave Emary was several years into the development of his own .17 rimfire magnum cartridge: “I had made a test barrel and several rifles, and we were killing prairie dogs before anybody else knew about it,” Emary said. “I did the cartridge design, chamber design and ballistics.” In mid-2000, Hor-nady approached CCI to load the .17 HMR. “Brett Olin [CCI/Speer, retired] deserves a lot of credit for taking a demonstrated concept and mass producing it,” Emary said. “The cartridge was intro-duced in the fall of 2001.”

The cartridge came to fruition due mainly to the use of newer powders, and it has been said that the powder-bridging problem was solved by charging the case before necking it to .17 caliber, though that note could not be substanti-ated at this time; most people in-volved at the time have long since retired. Hornady naturally had ex-clusivity to market the .17 HMR for some time, after which CCI began selling it under its own label. R

Nosler introduced its Model 48 bolt-action rifle in 2006. Since then, the line has grown to contain five vari-

ations of the rifle, including this year’s Long-Range to cash in on the current trend of long-range shooting. Over the course of a few weeks I shot a Long-Range .30 Nosler to see if the rifle lived up to its minute-of-angle (MOA) guarantee, and to see how well it shot from field positions.

The Long-Range rifle is based on a long-action version of the Model 48. The action certainly reflects influences of the Remington 700 with a push-feed bolt, a plunger ejector on the recessed bolt face and large ejection port. A two-position safety does not lock the bolt closed in the engaged position, and a slot in the right bolt lug rides on a rail in the action. An alu-minum trigger guard and floorplate are standard.

The Model 48 does have many distinctive features. The receiver has a flat bottom with an integral recoil lug threaded on the bottom to accept the front action screw. The “M16” style extractor is a spring-loaded

NOSLER MODEL 48 LONG-RANGE

leaf located on the left side of the right locking lug and hooks over a cartridge rim. The plunger on the bolt face throws cartridges and fired cases from the receiver when they clear the ejection port. A trim bolt release is located at the left of the rear bridge. The Timney trigger is set at a perfect 3 pounds.

The Long-Range is chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Winchester Magnum and the .26, .28, .30 and .33 Noslers. Rifles for all cartridges feature a 26-inch bar-rel Nosler states is “heavy.” The Shilen stainless steel barrel looks more like a “medium” contour with a diameter of 1.15 inches in front of the receiver that tapers to .65 inch at the muzzle. A removable muzzle brake threads onto the muzzle; rifle length is a long 48.5 inches with the brake installed. Removing the brake shortens that length by 2 inches. A cap screws flush onto the muzzle to protect the threads and gives the muzzle a finished look. All the metal is coated with CERAKOTE.

The barreled action is attached to a Manners Com-posite Stocks MCS-T Elite Tactical synthetic stock with the rear and front action screws passing through aluminum pillars cemented into the stock. Bedding material, on the inletting for the rear tang, around the recoil lug recess and on the flat behind the recoil lug, completes the bedding. The barrel is free floated. Bedding is tight, and a lot of back-and-forth rocking of the barreled action is required to separate it from the stock.

The Manners Elite stock is made entirely of carbon

fiber with a weight of 28 ounces, complete with a one-inch-thick Decelerator recoil pad. That is light for a full-size stock with a 10.75-inch-long forend that is 1.75 inches wide at the tip with a broad, flat bottom.

The stock has a high comb that drops only .38 inch from the bore’s centerline. A slot in the nose of the comb provides clearance for the retracted bolt. A slight forward slant to the comb pulls it away from the face during recoil. In the tactical style, the grip is nearly ver-tical with a palm swell on the right side. The grip is so large my hand would not fit around it. Rough pan-els on both sides of the forearm and grip provide a good grasp on the stock. The stock is available in five camouflage patterns.

A rifle called the Long-Range will be mostly shot from the prone position in the field. Usually, a stock dedicated to prone shoot-ing has a slightly longer length of pull than a stock used while stand-ing or sitting. The test rifle’s stock, however, has a 13.5-inch length of pull, which is about standard for a general stock.

Nosler recommends breaking in the new barrel on its rifles. “When new barrels are made, steel is un-evenly stressed and microscopic burs and rough-spots are created,”

Nosler’s website states. That does not give credit to Shilen’s ability to make a finished barrel. A look with a Lyman borescope into the Shilen stainless steel barrel on the test rifle showed the lands and grooves were fairly smooth from breech to muzzle, with the metal’s grain running with the bore. Very few places in the bore had slight cross-wise tool marks in the grooves.

To relieve metal stress and put a final polish on a bore, Nosler rec-ommends cleaning the barrel af-ter each shot for 10 rounds, then clean after every three shots for 15 rounds, then clean the barrel after five shots. The barrel must cool between each series of shots. All that counting makes my head hurt. Plus, watching clouds sail past becomes boring while wait-ing for a barrel to cool between shot strings.

I pampered the barrel by shoot-ing a few shots and spending a minute between shots while ad-justing the Meopta scope to dial it in at 25 yards, then went through the same process to sight in the scope at 100 yards. No more than five cartridges were fired in a row, because that many shots heated the barrel enough to cauterize a wound.

The Long-Range, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces, is rather light for a .30-caliber magnum. The weight, however, was increased to 9 pounds, 13 ounces with the ad-dition of a Meopta ZD 6-24x 56mm RD scope in Burris Signature rings and two-piece bases. That’s a load.

The .30 Nosler joins a crowded field of .300 magnum cartridges. Nosler says its cartridge combines the attributes of other .30-caliber magnums. “The 30 Nosler eclipses the velocity of the 300 Weatherby, headspaces on the shoulder like a 300 RUM, has an efficient powder column like that of the 300 WSM and fits in the same standard length action of a 300 Winchester Magnum . . . ,” Nosler’s website states.

The .300 Winchester Magnum is certainly the .30 Nosler’s main competition. Thumbing through my handloading records, the .300 Winchester fired 180- and 200- grain bullets about 50 to 70 fps slower than the Nosler cartridge. It’s about a wash between the two cartridges, though, because the Winchester Magnum loads were fired through a 24-inch barrel, and .30 Nosler loads are shot from a 26-inch barrel. The Nosler Re-loading Guide 8 shows the Nosler

Redding makes several reloading die options for the .30 Nosler. After firing Nosler cases two times, they had barely stretched.

Trophy Grade .30 Nosler cartridges loaded with 180-grain AccuBond bullets shot this five-shot group at 100 yards.

This group was shot at 300 yards from the prone position. The Trophy Grade ammunition contained 210-grain Accu-Bond Long Range bullets.

cartridge shoots 175- to 210-grain bullets from a 26-inch barrel about 100 fps faster than the Winchester cartridge with the same weight bullets from a 24-inch barrel.

Shot from the test rifle, .30 Nos-ler velocities were quite close to velocities listed for two of the company’s Trophy Grade .30 Nos-ler loads. Ten feet from the rifle’s

muzzle, AccuBond 210-grain Long Range bullets were about 30 fps slower than the 3,000 fps Nosler lists, and 180-grain AccuBonds were about 100 fps short of the 3,200 fps Nosler recorded.

The length of those fired cases measured 2.550 inches, under the .30 Nosler’s maximum case length of 2.556 inches. The cases remained pretty much the same length after full-length sizing them in a Redding custom sizing die.

Case length remained unchanged after firing and sizing them a sec-ond time.

With handloads, extreme veloc-ity spreads ranged from 37 fps to 22 fps when chronographing five shots using Nosler 190-grain Cus-tom Competition bullets. Velocity spreads varied from 47 fps to 11 fps with 190-grain AccuBond Long Range bullets. As far as velocity,

as well as a range of target equip-ment. Parker-Hale also made a living through the 1950s market-ing army-surplus Lee-Enfields of various models and marks, and in various degrees of “sporteri-zation.” The Parker-Hale name on a Lee-Enfield hunting rifle from Canadian Tire (as we lusted after in the 1950s and ’60s) was a guar-antee of quality and accuracy.

The sniper rifle supplied to the Canadian army was based on Parker-Hale’s M82, which in turn was built on a Mauser ’98 action. Parker-Hale did not manufacture these actions; instead, they were obtained from different sources, including the Spanish Santa Bar-bara. Parker-Hale rifles imported to the U.S. had model designations – the Model 81 Classic, Model 1200, Model 1100 Lightweight, and so on. I owned a Lightweight 6.5x55, with which I hunted in the late 1980s.

Good as it was, however, the Parker-Hale was still an old-style bolt action in conventional cali-bers. After 2000, it was replaced in Canadian service with a mid- range (up to 1,312 yards) .338 Lapua rifle, and by the McMillan TAC-50, for the decidedly unconventional .50 BMG cartridge. According to what scanty and unconfirmed sources are available, it was fitted first with a Leupold scope, later replaced by a Schmidt & Bender 5-25x.

This is the rifle with which the unidentified Canadian sniper made the 3,871-yard shot, as well as those made by MCpl Rob Furlong (2,657 yards) in 2002 and MCpl Arron Perry (2,526 yards) a few weeks before. Both occurred in Afghani-stan. Perry’s shot broke the record set in Vietnam in 1967 by American Carlos Hathcock. Both Furlong and Perry were members of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), one of the most famous regiments in the Canadian army.

After the 3,871-yard shot, a Can- adian army spokesman made the somewhat rash statement that, since it bettered the previous re-cord by 1,165 yards, it was a re-cord that might never be broken. I wouldn’t bet on it.

Colt’s Single Action ArmyDave ScovillThe Colt SAA is as popular today as it was in the past. This legendary revolver played an important role in the history of the American West. In this detailed volume, Editor Dave Scovill shares his knowledge of how to develop accurate loads for these fine guns and the skills needed to shoot them. From the original first-generation guns to the replicas that are available today, this book is the definitive source on reloading and shooting the Colt Peacemaker. Shooting World War II Small ArmsMike VenturinoMike’s new book will be one of the most comprehensive books available on WWII firearms. He also has worked up reloading data for these firearms, some of which is only available in this book. If you love WWII era firearms or own one, this book will help you learn more about it and show you how you can shoot it today.

Catalog # 554.7 . . . . . . . . . HB $54.00

Shooting Sixguns of the Old West Mike VenturinoConsidered in all its styles and calibers, more SAAs were made from 1873 to 1900 than any other single type of American revolver. However, it was not the only handgun about, nor was it the first revolver to take the then new metallic cartridges. From 1870, when the era of metallic cartridge firing sixguns began until 1900 which is generally considered the end of the Wild West, Colt, Remington, Smith and Wesson, Merwin & Hulbert, and a few other lesser known companies collectively produced hundreds of thousands of metallic cartridge firing sixguns. These handguns were at least of comparable quality to the Colt SAA, and some exceeded it by a wide margin. As far as actually shooting such guns, aside from the Colt Peacemaker, very few Old West sixguns have ever been put back into use. That has started to change, and this has probably come about from the enthusiasm generated by the great sport of cowboy action shooting.
