Iceland is a large island, habited by a nation with even larger ideas. Some don´t consider 320.000 a large population but Icelanders think on a much larger scale.

More books are published per capita in Iceland than in any other European state, theatre attendance is higher, so is the number of concerts, cinema attendance etc.

Today, Iceland´s capital, Reykjavík, is virtually an ongoing banquet of visual arts, classical music, rock, literature and modern dance from the world´s far corners. With every passing year it attracts more international media attention, tourists and cultural innovations. A number of successful music and arts festivals have demonstrated that Reykjavík is an ideal venue for cultural events on a larger scale.

Located on the top of the world, Iceland is an independent island between the continents of Europe and Northern America.

The geographic location makes RIFF a naturally ideal meeting point for filmmakers from either side of the Atlantic Ocean to explore various currents in the art of film making. RIFF brings together the best of East and West and we find it appropriate that we cross limits in our film selection, look beyond borders and present cutting edge films.

Innovation. The festival’s Grand Prix category, entitled “New Visions”, is limited to first and second works only. RIFF has thus carved a significant niche for itself among film festivals in terms of presenting and promoting new talent.

Networking is an important part of the festival’s activities, between young filmmakers and those with experience; between Icelandic (Nordic) cinema and international cinema; and between filmmakers and international studies of film and culture. RIFF also operates a market for films where new Icelandic film productions are presented to international industry professionals, such as buyers and distributors. Location scouting is also provided during the festival and several collaborations have materialized from such meetings between Icelandic and international professionals.

Dialogue has from the beginning been a basic theme in each edition of RIFF. The festival has always seen it as a duty to initiate a dialogue with the community and about it, between filmmakers and festival guests, between different cultural worlds, between different art forms, between film studies and filmmakers etc. The festival has always emphasized the screenings of documentaries, especially those that revolve around environmental themes and human rights. RIFF organizes panel talks, lectures and debates about various subjects concerning our society, culture and other contemporary affairs. We believe that by these means a valuable connection is forged with the community and knowledge is both absorbed and distributed; RIFF, in it’s own way, is a knowledge generation hub.

WORLDdocs / CULTUREdocs – aims to present the most interesting documentaries of the film industry each year.

Midnight Movies – sheds light on the dark corners of cinema, featuring low-budget films, b-films of all sorts and experimental and alternative works, often with cult status.

Icelandic Panorama – opens up the world of Icelandic filmmaking and showcases it to the outside World, thus building a bridge between Icelandic cinema and international filmmaking.

FOODdocs – revolves around feature films and documentaries about food; presented for the first time in 2009 in collaboration with Slow Food organisation.

Focus On – This special section offers insights into the film production from a certain country.

Emerging Masters – This section offers insights into the works of specific filmmakers.

Focus On (Works of the Honorary Guest) – This section offers a rare opportunity to see, on the silver screen of a movie theatre, the classic films directed by each edition‘s recipient of the RIFF Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement.

RIFF’s Talent Laboratory is for young talents from Europe and America. In the Laboratory they are given the chance to meet up in Reykjavík and experience what is going on in film making on the other side of the ocean.

RIFF s Talent Lab was held for the sixth time in 2011. Among lecturers were James Marsh, Lone Scherfig, Bela Tarr.

The main objective of the Talent Laboratory is to help young filmmakers make first hand contacts with film producers and other professionals who can help and consult them with their first feature film.

The Talent Laboratory will last for 4 days, during which the filmmakers will participate in master classes and discussions with already established names within the film industry. Education and entertainment will go hand in hand. The schedule will be packed with great films, workshops, events and seminars.

The transatlantic talent laboratory is inspired by Iceland’s location just between Europe and North-America. A location that can bridge the gap between the two continents, geographically and culturally.

Talents planning their first feature or other project will be given the chance to pitch their films project to experienced producers that attend the festival. Furthermore talents are offered to send in their short film or documentary and compete for the Golden Egg, a reward specially designed to encourage young filmmakers. A selection of the submitted works will be screened at the festival.
