Richlands High Sschool Health Science Academy (HSA)

One of several small learning communities at RHS, the HSA is for students interested in career fields such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, dietitian,

rehabilitative therapies, and medical office administration.

APPLICATION PROCESS

• Submit an essay. Why do you want to be a medical professional and how do you see yourself in a future medical practice? Minimum of 150 words and no more than 200 words.

• Submit Parent Recommendation form.

**Completed application must be submitted to the Health Sciences Academy Director (Mr. Fields) in Guidance.

Health Team Relations

This course is designed to assist potentialhealth care workers in their role and functionas health team members. Topics includeterminology, history of health care, healthcare agencies, ethics, legal responsibilities,careers, holistic health, human needs, change,cultural awareness, communication, medicalmath, leadership, and career decision-making.

Allied Health Science I

This course investigates the health caredelivery system, its services, occupations,and related sciences. Topics include thestudy of the language of medicine, medicalmathematics, microbiology, anatomy andphysiology, diseases/disorders, diagnoses,treatments, patient/client care regimens, careerdevelopment, and future technologicalinnovations.

Allied Health Science II

This course is designed to prepare potentialhealth care workers, preferably seniors, tobecome effective multi-skilled health teammembers. The work-based learning strategyappropriate for this course is a minimum 75hour clinical internship where student internsjob shadow in health care in local hospitals,medical/dental/veterinarian offices,nursing/convalescent/retirement facilities,wellness center, cafeteria’s, etc.

Health Sciences Advanced Studies This culminating course is for seniors whoare career-focused in a health or medicalcareer. Three parts of the course include aresearch paper, a product, and apresentation. Students work under theguidance of a teacher-facilitator incollaboration with community members,business representatives, and other schoolbased personnel.

**All Content can be utilized for Graduation Project.

THINKING OF BECOMING A CNA?Nurse Aide, Level I Certification

  A student may acquire Nurse Aide Level I certification if

the student successfully completes selected core competencies in Allied Health Science I, Allied Health Sciences II and supplemental competencies identified in the state approved Nurse Aide, Level I curriculum. A drug screening, criminal background check, and up-to-date shot record (at the student’s expense) are also required. Following successful completion of Allied Health Sciences II students must score at least 85 percent on a written examination and 100 percent on a performance assessment.

NOTE* Will not be offered until Academy meets necessaryGuidelines to enact instructional/testing procedures.

WHAT ABOUT A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN?

  This rigorous on-line course is designed to prepare

students for entry-level employment as a pharmacy technician. Included in the course is a clinical experience. Prior to clinical placement, a drug screening, criminal background check, and up-to-date shot record (at the student’s expense) are required.  Upon completion of the course, students will take the exam required by the State of North Carolina for certification as a pharmacy technician. This course is offered in conjunction with Medical Sciences II/Allied Health II or within Advanced Studies.

Teen Living

This course examines life management skills in the areas of personal and family living; wellness, nutrition, and foods; financial management; living environments; appropriate child development practices; and job readiness. Emphasis is placed on students applying these skills during their teen years.

Parent and Child Development

This course introduces students to responsible nurturing and basic applications of child development theory. Emphasis is on the parents’ responsibilities and the influences they have on children while providing care and guidance.

Foods and Nutrition I

This course examines the nutritional

needs of the individual. Emphasis is

placed on the relationship of diet to

health, kitchen and meal management, and food preparation.

Foods II - Advanced

This course focuses on advanced foodpreparation techniques while applying nutrition,food science, and test kitchen concepts using newtechnology. Food safely and sanitation receivespecial emphasis, with students taking the exam for the ServSafe credential from the NationalRestaurant Association.

Agriscience Applications

This course focuses on integrating biological/physical sciences with technology as related to the environment, natural resources, food production, science and agribusiness. Topics of instruction include agricultural awareness and literacy, leadership and FFA, employability skills, and introduction to all aspects of the total agricultural industry.

Animal Science I

This course focuses on the basic scientific principles and processes that are involved in animal physiology, breeding, nutrition, and care in preparation for an animal science career. Topics include animal diseases, introduction to animal science, animal nutrition, animal science issues, career opportunities, and animal science evaluation.

Animal Science II-Small Animal

This course provides instruction on animal husbandry topics related to small animals that are served by veterinarian. Content related to the breeding, grooming, care and marketing of animals that fit into this category will be covered .

Principles of Business And

Personal Finance

This course introduces the major principles and concepts that are the foundation for future study of business and management. Topics of study include basic business principles, personal finance concepts, management concepts, systems thinking, quality management, and the current environment for business in a multinational marketplace. Communication skills and basic mathematical concepts are reinforced in this course.

Computer Applications I

This course is designed to help students master advanced skills in the areas of word processing, database management, spreadsheet, telecommunications, desktop publishing, and presentation applications. Emphasis is on data communications, Internet and e-mail, as well as skill development in the integration of software applications, ethical issues pertaining tto information systems, and information technologies careers.

Computer Applications II

This course is designed to help students master advanced skills in the areas of integrating technology devices, Internet research strategies and uses, complex desktop publishing, multimedia production, and basic web page design. Emphasis is placed on skill development and refinement of skills in information technologies as well as economic, ethical, and social issues in the information technologies area.

Computerized Accounting I

This course is designed to help students understand the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on the analysis and recording of business transactions; preparation and interpretation of financial statements; accounting systems; banking and payroll activities; basic types of business ownership; and an accounting career orientation. Mathematics skills and critical thinking are reinforced.

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques utilized in solving business problems and making financial decisions. Mathematics skills and critical thinking are reinforced.
