TREVOSE 2018

The RIBA South West (Wessex) is delighted to welcome you all to the Great Britain & Ireland Architects Inter Regional Golf Tournament 2018........... now there’s a mouthful........... with special guest stars ‘the AIA’ from the USA.The tournament is in its 44th year, there have been 42 events held and 41 that involved a golf competition. There was no tournament in 1993, Scotland had won it 4 out of the preceding 5 years, so it was probably a case of ‘what’s the point’. In 2012, after a successful practice day, Hawkstone Park was flooded resulting in the competition being abandoned before a ball was struck. Therefore we have a dilemma, is the 50th anniversary 2024 (50 years), 2025 (50th event) or 2026 (50th golf competition)? We will leave that ‘squabble’ to the host regions in those years. For now, we are proud to host the 43rd event and weather permitting the 42nd golf tournament.

In 2007 we held our first South West event at Saunton in North Devon, this year we are inviting you all to the far reaches of Cornwall, to Trevose Golf and Country Club. The course is a Harry Colt design, which opened in 1925, recently it has hosted the Brabazon Trophy in 2008, the McGregor Trophy in 2012 and the England Men’s County Finals in 2017.

With the excellent ‘on site’ accommodation it should be an ideal venue, with the need for car travel limited to anyone wanting to try the excellent surfing at Constantine Bay down the road, those looking to sample the thrilling St Enedoc links nearby or those that wish to pay a visit to ‘Rick Stein’ town, Padstow.

We are as ever, immensely grateful to our sponsors, I am sure they will be willing to help out with any queries anyone has with regard to servcies or products they offer. This year’s headline sponsor is Brunel Professions, the largest independent PII specialist in the UK who, as a Lloyds broker, have access to the world’s insurance markets. We are also delighted to have on board our other sponsors, Forbo, Kohler and Murray & Willis. Whilst we are pleased that the tournament can attract sponsors, we are delighted that we are supported by four of the ‘very best’ companies in the construction industry and ones that hopefully will be our future business partners.

We look forward to the announcement of next year’s venue, being selected by Ulster I believe, a possible treat in store for 2019.After many months of planning, we hope that the event will be a great success, if there is anything you need addressed during the event, please contact one of us.

The New TrophyThis year we have a new trophy........................................................... there isn’t a mantelpiece in an ‘architect designed house’ in the British Isles, that would not begrudge adornment by such a unique and reverent object. A simple item, unconcerned with symbolism or reference and an entity not immediately obvious as a golf trophy. As significant designs often are, it has been criticised by some, one witless individual commenting, ‘it is similar to a sombre receptacle for the ashes of a beloved cat.’ It is, however, a trophy that will become well known, much loved and greatly desired.

The trophy has got off to an ignominious start however, with it’s provenance already questioned regarding the 2018 winners. The trophy incorrectly logs ‘West Midlands’ as triumphant, at Royal Birkdale in 2017, causing the all conquering East Midlands to be collectively aghast.
