Rhythmic Gymnastics Ginástica rítmica / Gymnastique rhythmique

Olympic competition format The rhythmic gymnastics programme at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games consists of an individual all-around and a group all-around competition. There are five apparatus used in individual rhythmic gymnastics. However, only four are used in any one competitive cycle, which usually lasts two years. In the individual all-around in Rio, gymnasts will compete with hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. Groups will perform two exercises: one in which all five gymnasts use the same apparatus (five ribbons), and a second, in which they use a combination of two apparatus (three pairs of clubs + two hoops). There are two competition phases in each event: qualification and finals.

Differences between the FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships and the Olympic Games There is no qualification for the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships, but strict qualification for the Olympic Games. Gymnasts can qualify their nations for an Olympic berth at the 2015 FIG World Championships or at the Aquece Rio test event. Therefore, the field at an Olympic Games is much smaller than that at the FIG world championships. The FIG world championships also feature events which are not contested at the Olympic Games. There are individual apparatus finals and group titles for each of the two exercises. There is also a team competition. Countries are ranked by adding the 12 best scores (three per apparatus) recorded by their gymnasts during the individual qualifying rounds. Each country may have three or four gymnasts in its team to be eligible for the team competition, but only the points of the three highest-scoring athletes on each apparatus will be counted.

Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games

• The participation quota has been increased from 24 to 26 individual gymnasts and from 12 to 14 groups. • The code of points has been changed (the artistic judges' panels have been removed and execution judges give

penalties for both artistic and technical faults)

• Different apparatus will be used in Rio: - In the group competition: five ribbons replaces five balls for the first exercise, and three pairs of clubs/two

hoops replace three ribbons/two hoops in the second exercise.

- In the individual all-around competition the apparatus remains the same.

Sport rules and procedures Rules for Olympic competition A total of 26 gymnasts will compete in the individual all-around qualification phase, which is held on August 19, with two apparatus being performed on each session. The top 10 ranked gymnasts from the qualification phase advance to the final, which is held the following day. Gymnasts tied for 10th place, once all the tiebreak rules and procedures (highlighted below) have been applied, will progress. A total of 14 groups will compete in the group qualification phase. The top eight ranked groups from the qualification phase will advance to the final. Groups tied for eighth place, once all the tiebreak rules and procedures (highlighted below) have been applied, will advance to the final.

Jury composition There are two judging panels in rhythmic gymnastics:

• The D Jury evaluates the number and level of difficulty in the exercises performed – known as D score. • The E Jury evaluates the artistic faults of execution related to character, connections, rhythm, dynamic

changes, expression, variety of the exercise. It also evaluates the technical faults of execution (body and apparatus movements mistakes) – known as E score.

A reference judges' system (known as R score) has been introduced to establish an automatic, and time-saving correction system in the case of problems with the awarded D and E scores. All reference judges will be appointed by the FIG. If the difference between the D score and the R score exceeds the pre-defined parameters, the D score will be replaced by the average of the R score. If the difference between the two scores remains within the pre-defined parameters the D score will stand. Distribution and calculation of scores D score + E score - penalties = F score For example: D: 7,900 E: 8,100 Final score: 7,900 + 8,100 = 16,000 pts. Tiebreak rules and procedures The FIG tiebreaking rules are presented in the FIG Technical Regulations and define how to determine which gymnast or group should prevail in case of equality of points. In rhythmic gymnastics, the main principles are: Individual all-around qualification In case of a tie for any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria:

1. The sum of the three highest final apparatus scores 2. The sum of the two highest final apparatus scores 3. The total execution score (four apparatus) 4. The total execution score (three best apparatus) 5. The total execution score (two best apparatus) 6. The total difficulty score (four apparatus) 7. The total difficulty score (three best apparatus) 8. The total difficulty score (two best apparatus) 9. If the gymnasts remain tied they will share the same classification

Individual all-around final In case of a tie at any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria:

1. The highest total execution score (four apparatus) 2. The highest total difficulty score (four apparatus) 3. If the gymnasts remain tied they will share the same classification

Group all-around qualification and final In case of a tie at any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria:

1. The highest total execution score (two exercises) 2. The highest total difficulty score (two exercises) 3. If the groups remain tied they will share the same classification


Penalties/disqualification rules Scoring penalties are incurred for major mistakes or misconduct such as loss and retrieval of apparatus, leaving the floor area, using non-standard apparatus, broken apparatus, contact of the apparatus with the ceiling, communication by the coach or group members during the exercise etc. There is also a stringent dress code for outfits regarding the cut and fit of the leotard. A gymnast can be penalised for inadvertently revealing a bra strap, for example, or if their outfit is decorated in anything other than an abstract design. Penalties range from 0.10 - 1.00 point per occurrence. Protests (inquiries)/appeals Inquiries are allowed only for the difficulty scores, provided that they are made verbally, immediately after the display of the score or no later than the end of the exercise of the following gymnast or group. For the last gymnast in a rotation, this limit is one minute after the score is shown on the score board. Only the accredited coaches next to the competition area are entitled to submit an inquiry. Late verbal inquiries will be rejected. A federation may not inquire about a gymnast from another federation. Every inquiry must be examined by the Superior Jury and a final decision (which may not be appealed) must be taken. The detailed procedure is outlined in the respective Code of Points and the Technical Regulations. In exceptional circumstances, the FIG might issue an Official Communication with an explanation of the situation.
