About Last Night | Pearl, Miss. – After a stretch of three straight games without a home run, the Jackson Generals decided it was time. Jamie Westbrook and Rudy Flores each launched dingers to right field to key an 8-1 Generals victory on Sunday at Trustmark Park, evening their series 2-2 with the Mississippi Braves (10-14). The victory for Jackson (17-6) ensures that Shelley Duncan’s ballclub will have the most wins in the Southern League by the end of April. Only two hits came the Generals’ way in the first three innings, but Westbrook lit into an offering in the fourth from Wes Parsons (0-2, 2.20 ERA) to break a scoreless tie. Westbrook’s third jack of the year began a three-run inning for the Generals that featured three hits, a walk, an error, and a sacrifice fly. The Generals ultimately finished with 11 hits, and Flores’ two-run bomb in the seventh inning proved to be the dagger, stretching the lead from 4-1 to 6-1. Juniel Querecuto went 4-for-5, narrowly missing a five-hit day with a pop-out to second base in the ninth inning. From the rubber, starter Taylor Widener collected six strikeouts and allowed only one hit, but he walked a season-high four batters and could not complete the fifth inning. Widener’s final free pass came with the bases loaded, providing Mississippi their only run. Kirby Bellow (1-0, 1.17 ERA) came on in relief, inducing an infield pop-up to escape further harm. After that, Joel Payamps and Yoan Lopez each worked a pair of run-free frames, racking up eight strikeouts in combination.

Put a Hurtin' on Them | Perhaps the most remarkable point of the Generals' 16-4 start was the way they played in spite of a roster impacted by early injuries. Ryan Atkinson and Jon Duplantier both missed starts after joining the team late from Extended Spring Training to finish individual rehab work, and Marty Herum and Jay Gonzalez each spent time on the DL during the first month of the year with injuries. Herum and Gonzalez accounted for 21 runs through the season's first 20 games while hitting a combined .344 (30-for-87), while Atkinson and Duplantier struck out 29 batters in the first 22.2 innings they pitched. Ben DeLuzio made a team-high 18 starts (all in center field) through the team's first 20 games before being placed on the DL 4/27 as the team leader in stolen bases. Matt Jones, a catcher, was leading the team in home runs when he went on the DL 4/28.

Bulls in the Pen | Starting April 21 vs Chattanooga, the Generals' bullpen went six straight games without giving up a run. In that span of 21.1 IP run-free, Joel Payamps had the most, working 5.0 IP (1 H, 1 BB, 6 K).Two games were 7-inning contests.

Speedy Gonzalez, Back from Pit Road | Generals outfielder Jay Gonzalez got off to a fast start in 2018, stealing a league-best five bases in the season's first three games. Gonzalez, who swiped 74 bases over the past two years as a Baltimore Orioles prospect, was placed on the Generals' DL on April 12, having hit .421 through his first six games with Jackson. Gonzalez returned to action on April 26 at Mississippi, notching hits in each of his first three games back with the team.

We're No. 1 | The Generals' 15-2 start gave them the most wins by any 2018 MILB team through 17 tilts. Last year, Jackson finished April an SL-best 15-8. It's also the most wins to start a season in franchise history. Their winningest month in the last two years was May of 2016, when they went 19-10 (.655) en route to a First Half North Division title (and an eventual championshp).

The Hits Just Keep On Comin' | In their April 21 win over Chattanooga, Jackson snagged 10+ hits for the 8th game in a row; the streak broke with 9 hits in a 7-inning win over the Lookouts two days later. The second game of that double-header, (also 7 innings) featured 10 hits, including Marty Herum's game-winning double. Through 23 games, Jackson's 242 hits led the SL.

Lean, Clean Defensive Machine | Following the April 16 contest against Birmingham, the Generals had ten players on their roster who had already played multiple defensive positions in the first ten games of the year. The only players not to play more than one position in that span were center fielder Ben DeLuzio and catcher Alberto Rosario. Additionally, the Generals played 9 straight error-free games in streak that ended April 20, going 8-1.

One Inning Ain't Enough, Jack | The Generals' bullpen showed great effectiveness in their first month, and part of it was due to the ability of Generals relievers to pitch more than one inning. Every pitcher in Jackson's bullpen has worked a multi-inning outing; Joel Payamps has the longest (3.0 IP). Only Kirby Bellow and Yoan Lopez have yet to work 1.1+ IP multiple times.

Spell Colin with a K | Generals rookie Colin Poche has been outstanding early in 2018. Poche struck out 21 batters over his first 10.0 IP with 3 hits and 2 walks allowed. The 24-year-old Poche leads the league through April 28 with 18.9 Ks-per-9.

Cribbs Rocking | Do-it-all General Galli Cribbs hit for the cycle on April 18 vs. Birmingham, collecting an inside-the-park home run, a triple, a double, and a single in that order in an 8-1 win. It was the first cycle for a General since current Kansas City Royals outfielder Abraham Almonte completed the ten-base feat in 2013. Cribbs' 1.400 OPS led all Double-A players through 12 games. Cribbs has hit 2 of his 3 career HR (in 300+ career games) in 2018. Cribbs ranks second in the league in OPS in April, trailing only Rudy Flores.

Duncan Does Double-A | Generals manger Shelley Duncan is taking the wheel at Double-A for the first time, hav-ing managed in previous years with High-A Visalia and Short-Season Hillsboro, both Arizona affiliates. Duncan's staff is well known to him: pitching coach Doug Drabek and coach Javier Colina were on Duncan's first staff at Hillsboro in 2015, helping the team win a Northwest League title. Also, hitting coach Vince Harrison held the same role last season under Duncan at Visalia.
