B i t ll l l C M i l & St ffBuy-in at all levels – Company, Managerial & Staff • Managers and Directors need to understand the changes to traditional workflow

• Moving to this platform could initially take you longer for your first project

• Hardware may need to be upgraded

• Templates will need to be created and amended

• Users will need to be trained and supported

• CAD Managers will need to be up skilled to handle large databases and novice users

• Content will need to be created or customised

T iti i f CAD kfl h d t i l j b l hTransitioning from CAD – workflow changes and typical job roles change• You decided the break-up of the model objects (worksets) and how will you manage

the team. This can change many times during the life of the design & documentation.

• Assign tasks to users. That way you can see if your meeting your proposed project plan timeline. Remember it’s one model not several Xrefs

• User roles - Modeller’s (3D) vs. Detailers (2D) vs. View Annotators (2D)

• Many users in the one file Not one user per file Use linked files to reduce overall file• Many users in the one file. Not one user per file. Use linked files to reduce overall file size. Typically less users than CAD.

• BIM or Project manager to set up restore and manage the users & datasets• BIM or Project manager to set-up, restore and manage the users & datasets.

• Groups are not a block, a family is a block. Use them with care. Don’t overload your project with 3D objects Do you need to see all components in 3D?project with 3D objects. Do you need to see all components in 3D?

Implementation

C id tiConsiderations• Assess the requirements from all departments, agree on the scope and reassess

regularly to include everyone.

• Users will need to think “differently””about how they “draft”. They should “model” how it will be built….in most cases (software limitations????)

• Larger files. Storage can be an issue. Email impossible – unless it’s a garage

• Users working on a single Central file Across multiple offices WAN Linked files etc• Users working on a single Central file – Across multiple offices. WAN, Linked files etc

• Content creation – slower than creating a block – but much more intelligent. “4hrs to create a window!!!!”create a window!!!!

• Some customisation will need to occur to get your company’s look and feel. Not all CAD Standards can be incorporated Elevation markersCAD Standards can be incorporated. Elevation markers.....

H d & S ft R i tHardware & Software Requirements• Processor and speed, Revit is still not multithreading capable nor 64bit addressable

• RAM – don’t skimp here, up to 4GB (32bit windows can’t address more than this anyway)

H d D i 10K 15K RPM i th th• Hard Drive – 10K -15K RPM is worth the money

• Graphic card – makes a difference in a 3D view, but ONLY there

• Optical or laser mouse WITH A SCROLL WHEEL

• Virtual memory – don’t leave this on dynamic, set it to double your physical allocation

• Software – get a couple of licenses of the other Revit flavours. Architecture, Structure & MEP bl t t t i t d h d l il& MEP can enable you to create certain geometry and schedules more easily.

File Naming generalnaming & StorageFile Naming, generalnaming & Storage• Naming families (content) is extremely important. This is how users will search…

Area – Object Name – Sub type.rfa

• Shared Parameters – name change is a tedious task if needed. Open each family in the whole library, add parameter, save family. Rather, rinse, repeat…..

• UPPERCASE – Sentence Case – lower case. Keep it consistent

N f d ’t t it i th f il P t it i h d t• Name of company – don’t put it in the family name. Put it in a shared parameter.

• Name it well. Don’t quick fix here. it’s really a long fix!!!! R b d t b d t b !!!Remember database, database!!!

• Folder Structure – easily searchable. Or a content manager, Digital Building Solutions.

• Can some documentation be done in a legacy CAD application to aid transition?

• If things go pear shaped - Fall back procedure – can you export back to 2D and finish it ff th ?it off there?

T i i BIM M G l St ff Di t !!!Training - BIM Managers, General Staff, Directors!!!• BIM requires a new way of working and thinking. The plans are the elevations, which

are the sections which are the schedules. They are not xrefs linked into each other.

• A BIM manager (remember they may not have much time to support CAD anymore!!) will be needed to support, drive, teach and set-up the projects and end users.

• Depending on your office & project size, each project may require it’s own BIM or Revit project Manager to coordinate the team, manage the file/s and coordinate with other disciplines.p

• General staff will need to understand new tools, methodology, limitations as well as new ways to display the data (schedules, 3D Views, walkthroughs, renderings etc)y p y ( g g )

• Directors need to understand the new workflows and accept that some things will take longer initially as users become proficient in Revit. Revit is not a new CAD package and the workflow IS different…

Implementation

T Siti i ti j t ti I h t i iTeam – Siting, communication, project meetings, In-house training, • Is the team siting together? Do they enjoy working together?

• Do they communicate well to each other…..or are they all “plugged in” to iTunes, facebook, MySpace?

• Having a “wall”(in a drafting view) where users can type, families to be made, workflow to be adhered to, tasks to be done and completed etc

• Project meetings typically happen once a week on a large job, have a Revit meeting at the end to assign tasks to users, talk about correct modeling procedures, tips and tricks, tick off the “wall” items as completed.

• In house training - a company users group, where the BIM Manager can show new tools, correct modeling procedures, template revisions, users can show other staff not using Revit what it’s capable off Supply some food and drink and get morenot using Revit what it s capable off. Supply some food and drink and get more people interested.

T l tTemplates• Multiple Templates

for different project types

• Graphic Style

• View Templates

• Room & Area Names (and an excess of these, easier to delete than create)

• Sheets – named and numbered

• Project Parameters – Folder sorting, browser organisation, filters

• Commonly used content loaded into the template, wall types, columns, doors, windows, annotations & you though you didn’t need a BIM Manager....

Implementation

C t t F ili S l Fil St d dContent – Families, Sample Files, Standards

• Downloaded content –Check it!!! Assimilate it to your standards

• Sample Files – Walls, Floors, Roofs, Stairs, Railings, Details, Detail Components, N t S b l M t i lNotes, Symbols, Materials

• Object Styles – Category definitions – some standards as to what goes on what category Don’t lump all elements into Generic Modelscategory. Don t lump all elements into Generic Models.

• “Layers” - naming of subcategories. You didn’t let users create their own layers in CAD so having some standards in Revit are just as important!!!CAD, so having some standards in Revit are just as important!!!

• Document what the standards are – even if it preliminary, if there is nothing users will create their own Maybe use a Wiki page or intranet where it can be updated easilycreate their own….Maybe use a Wiki page or intranet where it can be updated easily. No one reads the 364 page CAD Manual now, right???

D i M d l C t ti M d lDesign Model vs. Construction Model• Using the one model from a preliminary massing study, then into a sketch design

model, into a developed design and finally Construction documentation will help reduce errorsreduce errors.

• Having a sound template to enable this is important. Area Analysis parameters are very important Sample files to copy wall floor stair railing definitions from is easiervery important. Sample files to copy wall, floor, stair, railing definitions from is easier than having these families stored in your template file

• Keep the existing works, demolition and proposed works all in the one model. Maybe p g , p p ysave a back-up of the existing model.

• Use Design Options to avoid having multiple Revit files. Trying to cut and paste g p g p y g pdifferent objects from one file to another is problematic as objects become interrelated.

• Try and streamline internal processes. Are you double handling tasks, deliverables??Implementation

Page 16: Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP - RTC Events Revit... · Implementation Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP Toby Maple AEC Consulting Services

I li ti M d li t h iImplications on Modeling techniques• Testing a certain methodology before applying on masse,

this could save hundreds of hours downstream.

• The selection of the correct categories & sub categories determines how the objects will be scheduled and display. Using a railing for sun shading…..

• Keep it consistent, let everyone know there is a certain way of creating particular geometry. Saves time trying to work out what someone else did.

• Don’t model objects that there is a specific tools for (Stairs, Floors, Walls) as a component family. Take the time to learn the tools (and their limitations)

• Weekly project meetings, in house training, local user groups, RTC, AUGI, Revitcity or the many blogs, web pages etc are a great place to learn.

Implementation

Page 17: Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP - RTC Events Revit... · Implementation Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP Toby Maple AEC Consulting Services

R ll tRollout• Rolling out a new application into your firm

should be done in a controlled manor.

• Having everyone using Revit with no standards in place is similar to having no standards in CAD. You wouldn’t do it.

• Once the first project is underway, standards are created, users trained, BIM Manager restoring/managing the data, content creators making content, requirements from other departments met then start your second projectrequirements from other departments met, then start your second project.

Implementation

Page 18: Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP - RTC Events Revit... · Implementation Revit Architecture, Structure, MEP Toby Maple AEC Consulting Services

L L tLessons Learnt…• Have a project plan on the expected timeframes and deliverables that you think you

can achieve. Have a fall back plan.Quality Families Make your own content or have a dedicated resource for this It’s• Quality Families. Make your own content, or have a dedicated resource for this. It’s quicker, it’s standardised and it works….

• Have a Revit evangelist on the project implementation team. Preferably in upper managementmanagement

• This is NEW territory, it’s different to CAD. Remind the doubtful how many years that CAD has been customised and standardised in your company. Revit is easier than this, but it will take some time, but not years.

• Don’t leave anyone out in the scoping, assessment, implementation. Assess and reassess. Get sign off that this is what they what Revit to do for them.

• Template, template, template. If this is not managed and updated (just like the library) users will be frustrated.

• Usability - always think of the end user. They are the ones who have to use it every day!!!A i t d i th t & t f th fil ill t l t• A minute saved in the set-up & management of the file will cost you long term.
