COASTAL HIKESThere are several coastal trails, along the Indian Ocean, which offer a wide range of hiking opportunities.

• Sainte-RoseTake the coastal path to the Anse des Cascades, cross the lava flows from the 1977 eruption and explore the more developed surroundings of Cayenne and La Marine. Explore the costal cliffs and lava flows with their lush and varied vegetation. It is wonderful to feel the sea breeze so close to the volcano and enjoy the magnificent views along the way (Quai de Sardine and the Pointe de Bellevue).

• Saint-Denis, Sainte-Marie and Sainte-SuzanneThe Northern coastal paths showcase the island’s historical and cultural heritage. There are a range of leisure and tourist attractions to be enjoyed, all along the trail (Barachois in Saint-Denis, Sainte-Marie marina, Sainte-Suzanne light-house and Bocage).

• Étang-SaléThe coastal paths offer a variety of different hikes. Enjoy lovely treks, through varied landscapes (fumaroles, beaches, lake). The black sand and sunsets are unforgettable.

Reunion Island, situated in the Indian Ocean, more than 10,000 km from any European capital, flaunts its natural resources which are sure to delight. Its uniqueness resides in its origin: this volcanic island, created by a fusion of lava and sea, is the ideal setting for keen hikers and volcano enthusiasts.

This 5 day/4 night circuit, led by a specialist guide, will take you into the heart of the Piton de la Fournaise, on an unfor-gettable journey.

• Day 1Set off on a real educational journey: go back in geological time and experience an island volcano close-up. An unusual experience... Picnic in a crater! Dinner and night in Saint-Pierre or surrounding region, in bed and breakfast accommodation or small hotel.

• Day 2Visit to the lava tunnels: the morning’s agenda includes traversing a lava tunnel (1.2 km, 3.5 hr underground), formed by the lava flows from the 2004 Grand-Brûlé eruption, led a specialist caving instructor.“The spectacle that awaits you will teach you about how the volcano was formed, completely changing the way you view the landscape in the future”.Lunch served at Moustache in Le Tremblet!Set off for Sainte-Rose where you will spend the night in bed and breakfast accommodation or a small hotel.

• Day 3”Entre Mer et Océan” (between sea and ocean) in the South: check out some of the original sites with a guide who will be delighted to share his enthusiasm for volcanoes, flora and fauna with you. • Day 4In the morning, a guided visit to the Vanilla Bourbon plantation in Sainte-Rose. On a 4 ha farm, some 300 metres above sea level, you’ll discover some of the island’s indigenous and endemic plants, in the heart of protected forest. Free time for lunch. Afternoon free. Enjoy yourself and take a stroll through the village of Sainte-Rose: La Marine, the church, l’Anse des Cascades etc. A moment of pure delight!Night and half-board in a *** hotel or equivalent in the North or on the West coast.
