The National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA), India has decided that no untreated municipal wastewater and industrial

effluents would be allowed to enter River Ganga after 2020 under “Mission Clean Ganga”. Kolkata Metropolitan Development

Agency (KMDA) has been identified as the nodal agency for implementing the objectives of NGRBA in the State of West Bengal.

JBECPL has been deployed by KMDA to provide the necessary engineering consultancy services for preparation of a DPR and

submission to NGBRA. A centralized sewage treatment facility estimated at 15.5 MLD having Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR)

was proposed in Champdani of Hooghly district in the state of West Bengal. Wastewater will be treated to tertiary level treatment

before disposal to nearby DVC canal with provision of reuse of the effluent is provided.

houses remain submerged for hours together. Such water-logging results sufferings of people and causes outbreak of various

Project Background & Features :

Steel making capacity rise (5 MTPA to 10 MTPA) of Tata Steel caused increased demand of coke. This demand rise was

planned to be supported by augmentation of existing coke oven batteries and installation of some new batteries. This ensured

higher waste water generation from coke oven plant in increased production scenario. The existing ETP was supported with

double stage activated sludge process and clarification unit and its design capacity was 120 m3/hr where as the existing

operating load was 75 m3/hr. The future expansion extrapolated nearly 225 m

3/hr of waste water generation. So the ETP was

planned for augmentation with the above mentioned scope in a difficult brown-field environment. Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd.

was deployed as the Consulting Engineer & JUSCO was deployed as the local sub-contractor of Advent for this project. Advent,

USA was the technology supplier.

Development of new Effluent Treatment Plant at Cold Rolling Mill, Bara of Tata Steel

Waste Gas & one Dedusting ESP for Sinter Plant no: 2 & 3 and Power House 4 and 24 no: of Bag Filter in Refractory Process

Unit of the factory was the scope of services of the project modules I was attached with. The capacity upgradation of the air

pollution devices was planned in such a way that augmented level of air purification with present operating load will ensure the

emission within the prescribed standard of air pollutant stack discharge of Central Pollution Control Board, India during future

enhanced steel manufacturing scenario. Fl Smidth & HSC was two major suppliers of ESP & Fabric Filters for this assignment.

Installation of Continuous Emission Monitoring System in Tata Steel Limited.

Tertiary treatment through adsorption of critical parameters like Phenol, Cyanide and Thio-cyanide present in coke oven

biologically treated effluent by Coke Breeze (a coke making scrap) was effective in laboratory scale observation. The objective of

this study was further upscaling of the same. Effective management of a coke making solid waste and development of new

adsorbent for effluent treatment were two target benefits.

The research task was successful in laboratory scale by phosphorus removal through froth floatation process. Objective of this

study was further upscaling of the same to fit into pilot scale. Design of the pilot plant was a significant part of this study.
