FACULTY EXCELLENCE AWARD LETTER:

Dear CTU Colleagues, We are pleased to share with you the winner and honorable mention recipients of the Colorado Technical University Online Faculty Excellence Award. CTU Online, beginning with the spring of 2009, will honor its exemplary faculty each quarter with this award, and our four award winners each year will be nominated for the CEC faculty excellence award program. We received 117 distinct nominations from students, faculty and staff for the 2009 spring quarter, with 73 individual faculty members put forward for consideration.  Committee members Lauren Woods, Richard Lorgus, Michael Flanagan, Lakeisha Marvel,  and I are pleased to announce that Cindy Roberts, a member of our General Education faculty, is the recipient of the 2009 Spring Faculty Excellence Award. Cindy’s talents as a teacher, her embrace of the professional learning model, and her commitment to her students is best expressed through the words of one of her students:

I would like to nominate Cindy A. Roberts for the Faculty Award. CTU has many good instructors but when I read your letter Cindy's name was at the top of my list. She is the instructor for MAT 205. I had her during my associates degree. When I opened my Pre calculus book I thought for sure I was going to flunk my first class at CTU. I got lucky when I was assigned to Cindy's class. Real world is the best way to describe her teaching methods. She managed to make sense out of a lot of funny looking symbols by breaking it down to everyday language. She also brought  in to focus how to use the information in the real world of business and life. I also utilized the tutoring classes for MAT 205 which she also taught. I was so glad to hear her voice recently when I went into the statistics lab. I did not use the live chat sessions so she did not even know that I utilized her skills but I sure knew she was there. I knew when I heard her voice that I was going to get through statistics also. The really great instructors are able to help students understand the whole picture. She always took the time to explain the whole concept so that it made sense and the students could grasp the concepts. She is always willing to take the time to make sure that everyone has the help that they need. She has a great personality, a lot of knowledge, and an amazing ability to communicate that knowledge. She is a

shining example of what CTU has to offer its students.

We are also pleased to acknowledge the extraordinary teaching of our honorable mentions: Computer Sciences: Brent WilsonCriminal Justice: Ivan KaminskyHealth Studies: Marshall WrenBusiness and Management: Stephanie MiclotGeneral Education (including New Student Programs): Alfonso Robertson The CTU Online Faculty Excellence Award honors that member of the faculty who best exemplifies through his or her teaching the mission of Colorado Technical University:

The mission of Colorado Technical University, an institution of higher learning, is to provide career-oriented education by teaching applied, real-world, industry-current programs in selected areas, serving the needs of students for employment and career advancement and the needs of industry for highly qualified professionals at the associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctorate levels.

Any and all faculty members who teach at least one class for CTU Online during the quarter for which the award is made are eligible for consideration. A selection committee chaired by the Dean of Academic Affairs reviews all nominations and names a winner, along with 5 honorable mentions – one each from Computer Sciences, Criminal Justice, Health Studies, Business and Management, and General Education (including New Student Programs). The winner will receive a $1500 award and a trophy, and each of the honorable mentions will receive $200. The winner’s name will also be inscribed on a perpetual honor plaque displayed at the CTU Online headquarters. Warm Regards,Robin  Robin B. STUDENT COMMENTS

Austin Community Collegeo Great stuff! Ms. Roberts does an excellent

job of presenting new material in a very clear and concise way.

o I enjoyed the enthusiasm shown by the instructor. She was quick to answer email and well prepared.

o I think Cindy is an excellent teacher. She's very quick to respond to questions. She is very good at expanding beyond the lesson basics if we ask a question about how to do something not covered or more advanced.

o GREAT INSTRUCTOR! That’s all I can really say... just GREAT!

o Cindy responded to e-mail very quickly - either the same day or the following day. I really appreciate rapid responses.

o I really enjoyed taking this class. The teacher was very interactive with students using the web board provided. This allowed all to learn from others questions. And Cindy was never long on providing answers to questions posted.

o Instructor was quick to respond to my questions and did a good job explaining the answers.

o Ms. Roberts is very knowledgeable and willing to share. She is very supportive in my efforts to do well in the class.

o This is the best run class I have taken in the Webmaster certificate program! The class notes are exceptionally clear and concise. The instructor was unusually proactive and encouraging to every student. The class plan was very well organized. Grade A+.

o Very good online course. Instructor is very organized and manages online courses well. She is good at engaging online students and communication.

o Cindy was a good online instructor. I especially appreciated the fact that she responded to every one of my emails usually within the hour. This was my first online class and I learned a lot. That being

said, I miss the one-on-one interaction that a classroom offers so I will probably

continue my studies in the classroom. THANKS!

Colorado Technical Universityo After almost 3 years I am graduating CTU,

You may not remember me, you did MAT205 tutoring, and I participated in every one of them :). I wanted to thank you again, once in awhile a teacher, through his or her fundamental philosophy on life, and the joy they bring to the subject they teach, has an impact on a student’s career, the way you teach, the obvious passion you have for teaching, made me look at school a different way, look at teachers a different way, and when I had those classes where things were not going well, or the teacher was just going through the motions, I encouraged myself by thinking I may run into another Cindy

Roberts.o Thank you, All I can say is when I started

this class I was scared and did not think I would pass this class, and with your support and caring for your students and the willingness to be there for us is GREAT. Thank you.

o She was helpful all the way until the end of the course. Her class was well organized and lively. Presented with understandable examples in really live. She brought statistics to live and made look so easy. Although I was scared in the beginning because of math, but after two chats everything started to fall in place.

o Cindy is an excellent instructor. She did a great job in the live chat with her power point presentations. They were extremely helpful in understanding the material for the course.

o Don't change a thing. Ms. Roberts was a phenomenal instructor. If I'd had more teachers like her, I would have taken college immediately after high school. I cannot shower her with enough praise. She made Statistics a pleasure, made sure I understood everything and went way beyond her responsibilities in making sure I learned the concepts/curriculum. Ms. Roberts deserves a raise. I wish all instructors were as excellent as her. I had fun and learned so much. The Power Point presentations that went along with her Live Chats were an excellent learning tool, and should be utilized by other instructors at CTU. The fact that she went so far above and beyond speaks volumes as to her dedication and caring as an instructor. Get more teachers like Cindy Roberts.

o Professor Roberts was very professional and easy to converse with. My questions and concerns were always addressed in a timely manner. Many of her extra lectures were worth the time taken and enjoyable to interact with.

o Great experience! Professor Roberts patience help tremendously. I saw the title of the course (statistics) listed and felt instant fear. Professor Roberts carefully explained each phase so that even I could understand. Great instructor.

o During chats the interaction with fellow students was fine. With a group assignment, there was no interaction at all with the other three people in my group. This was conveyed to the Professor, and handled accordingly.

o Thank you for the feedback, I have to say that I really enjoy your class. I live in a college area in NH and everyone I have talked to about taking statistics gave me the oh no your taking stats good luck. I have to say you have made this class fun and easy to understand your energy is contagious and I really enjoy listening to the archives I wish I could make it to a live session but I have two jobs and a very full schedule. My whole family is pretty much teachers in some aspect and they always rave about

Page 9: Resume Cindy Roberts 2016

students who tell them that they enjoy being a student of theirs so here is my I enjoy being a student of yours and thank you for making this class enjoyable, I wish you taught more than stats

o This is my second time taking this class.  You have done an awesome job in explaining this difficult subject.  You have also made yourself available for any questions a student might have.  I did well through the first 3 Assignments and then I ran into a virtual roadblock in my last class. Assignment 4 is where I started having my trouble during the last class.  I don't see any problems as of yet; but if any come up, I will definitely let you know.  This 3rd assignment was what I had turned in during my last class and I resubmitted it about 2 days into our class; I hope that was ok.  All other assignments will all be newly submitted.  I just had a head start towards the first 3 assignments. Thanks again for your interest in all of us students. We appreciate you greatly.

o Thank you for your early grading and comments on the DB post.  You are doing an outstanding job of making Statistics fun and interesting.  Last session I had Marketing.  The professor was excellent, but it was a grind getting it done.  I'm actually looking forward to your chats and even the tasks (and my grade).  Thank you again.  You have a wonderful personality for teaching and a passion for the subject, and it comes through in every interaction.  I really appreciate you methods and keeping me motivated..  CTU is lucky to have you, and I'm so glad I got moved to section 22!

o Thanks for standing by me; I really appreciate your dedication. I have never had a teacher like you before. This class and English will be my most intimidating ones, English I have next. I have to make it through. My dream is to graduate Magna Cum Laude of my class. I feel like I have been left behind because of the problems I have and my class will graduate before me. CTU calls me every other day to make sure I don't drop. They say I am the hardest working student they have ever had and the most determined. I don't know about all that. I guess they just know I have lot of problems. I will overcome them hopefully someday. You are the greatest! I mean it from my heart. Thank you for always being there.

o Prof. Roberts, thank you very much for your detailed comments regarding this assignment. Your feedback is very helpful and greatly appreciated. I sometimes have trouble getting past the math involved in this course without going crazy. I am glad that I was able to actually get the math right this time. It required some effort on my part and I am happy that my hard work was rewarded. I remember you telling the class at the beginning that we should not let the math intimidate us, or something close to that. I have tried to not let the math get me too bothered but sometimes it is tough. I have learned a lot so far and I just hope that the math is sinking in somewhat. Thank you

not just for your help but also for conducting an enjoyable and educational class.

o I wanted to share the following story with you.  A student named Kristina Huggins called me to let me know what a terrific instructor Cindy Roberts is.  Kristina was in an accident that caused frontal lobe brain damage 5 years ago and she struggles with her memory.  Kristina told me that Cindy allows her extra time to do her assignments and is always available to help when needed.  Kristina said that Professor Roberts explains math concepts so well that she now understands concepts she never thought she would be able to grasp, such as fractions, depreciation, payroll and taxes. Kristina also raved about the fact that Cindy did such a great job teaching her excel that excel is now Kristina’s “New best friend”.  She has even taken over the family budgeting and put all the information into an excel spreadsheet.   Kristina is thankful that she has such a terrific instructor that has helped her conquer her fear of math!

University of Phoenix / Axia Collegeo Thank you, I'm glad you took the initiative to

help each student throughout this 9 weeks. It was a pleasureto have such a phenomenal teacher with a great sense of humor.

o Thank you so much for a great class, I learned so much. I really appreciate the offer to help me in the future I will make sure to save your contact info!

o I really appreciate all you have done to help us get through this course! I will admit, I was terrified of this class because of how challenging Math 116c was for me. But, thanks to you, I did very well.I really enjoyed being in your class!

o Instructor Cindy Roberts there is a difference between a talent and a gift.  Anyone and everyone have a talent, but you dear have the gift of teaching.  Your patience is remarkable and I could tell as we as your students would express feelings of depression or confusion, your heart broke and you begin to reach out more and more to us and for this I thank you!  Now let me dry my eyes with my soft self and do my best on this exam!

o I could not say it in posting but I wish I had instructors like you in the first place because I never have been bad in math. You are an outstanding instructor and the support you give us is amazing to see in these days. Thank you.
