GENRES. SEMESTER 1

Comedy, from silent comedy [Chaplin and Keaton], to examining visual and dialogue-based humor with the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope and Peter Sellers.

Animation – An overall history of animation and its development from classic hand drawn to more thematically complex films, begin-ning with early Disney, to the renaissance of animation in the 1980s [Beauty and the Beat, The Lion King].

2. 7 TH /8 TH GRADE INTERMEDIATE FILM. PERIODS 1,2, 4 & 6

A further development and exploration of film genres in classic Hollywood cinema.

SEMESTER 1

1. THE HOLLYWOOD GANGSTER focusing on the films of James Cagney and a parody, Some Like it Hot.2. THE UNIVERSAL HORROR LEGACY focusing on classic Universal films of the 30s and 40s: Dracula, Frankenstein

and The Wolf Man. Concluding parody: Young Frankenstein.3. THE WESTERN GENRE. A detailed history of the Western and its relationship with both American history, western

mythology and geography. Films range from My Darling Clementine and The Naked Spur, to Rio Bravo, The Magnifi-cent Seven and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

SEMESTER 2

THE HISTORY AND REBIRTH OF THE HOLLYWOOD MUSICAL, FROM 1939-TO THE PRESENT DAY. [INCLUDES 7TH

PERIOD]

Devoted exclusively to the Hollywood musical film by decade, covering at least one or two classics from each epoch. Examples include: The Wizard of Oz, Meet me in St Louis, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Singin’ in the Rain, High Society, West Side Story, Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof.Students will learn the importance of lyrics and dance to tell a cohesive narrative and to inform and reflect character development.

CRITERIA: For students who achieved a B or above in the intermediate class and demonstrates enthusiasm and academic proficiency in the subject, students nominated and recommended by teacher.

A further exploration of previous year’s gangster genre but incorporating contemporary classics that include Bonnie and Clyde and The Sting.

2. FILM NOIR AND THE FEMME FATALE

A basic look at this complex sub-genre, focusing on style, mood and character. Films include Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce.

3. ROMANTIC CLASSICS

A study of three different romantic classics and their historical contexts:Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Splendor in the Grass.

SEMESTER 2 - 3 DIRECTORS

A look at the works of three of cinema’s most influential directors within the Hollywood system.
