Osa Conservation’s (OC) work to protect and maintain critical bird habitat and to ensure success in already restored parcels at Cerro Osa and restore vital endangered and migratory bird habitat at Lomas de Sierpe and the Yellow-billed Cotinga Sanctuary was made possible by the support of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin . ENSURING SUCCESS IN RESTORED PARCELS Cerro Osa In late 2014, general maintence of previous established Cerra Osa parcels was conducted, including the removal of weeds, vines, and ensuring that the rows were clear. On average over 70% of the trees planted have survived and 92% of the surviving trees are in good condition. The average height of planted trees is 65.3 cm with a range of heights between 13.7 cm and 241 cm. The difference in the height range is wide because of the slow-growing species; these hardwood species grow naturally in mature forests and it is normal for their height to increase only a few inches a year.

☐ Project Summary.

Osa Conservation’s (OC) work to protect and maintain critical bird habitat and to ensure success in already restored parcels at Cerro Osa and restore vital endangered and migratory bird habitat at Lomas de Sierpe and the Yellow-billed Cotinga Sanctuary was made possible by the support of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin.

ENSURING SUCCESS IN RESTORED PARCELSCerro OsaIn late 2014, general maintence of previous established Cerra Osa parcels was conducted, including the removal of weeds, vines, and ensuring that the rows were clear.

Despite their slow growth, these trees are in good condition.

RESTORING VITAL ENDANGERED AND MIGRATORY BIRD HABITATCerro OsaApproximately 450 native species trees were planted in Cerro Osa with the help and participation of 2 groups of student volunteers from la Universidad Estatal a Distancia de Costa Rica.

sanctuary The species planted were selected based on their capacity to adapt to the local transiton zones between the mangroves and forest, as well as their capacity to provide birds, especially the Yellow Billed Cotinga, with an adequate food source. At this moment the plantation is in excellent condition and has received the necessary maintence to provide good growth.

Observation platforms for bird monitoringThree platforms were constucted for bird conservation and monitoring. One of the platforms was constructed on the Yellow Billed Cotinga Sanctuary, which is used specifically for the monitoring of cotingas. Another platform was constructed on Finca Aledana, a MINAE property that overlooks the Golfo Dulce and mangroves of the Rincon
