Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, Let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy:

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Gathering Let Your Mind Dwell on These Things Ed Newman (2011)

May God’s living spirit be known to us here; The Lord is near, so very near.

Be anxious for nothing, but in all things by prayer; With thankful hearts, make your requests to God.

Whatever is true, whatever is good, whatever is right; Whatever is lovely or pure, is noble or just, and worthy of Praise in God's sight; Let your mind dwell on these things … Let your mind dwell on these things …

Let your mind ___ dwell ___ on these things.

Opening Prayer

I now know, I can't escape myself. I know my ways. I'm with me all day: hearing me talk, hearing me think, watching me do. I sometimes act as if you won’t.

You beckon us with hands that soon will be scarred by betrayal, greed, selfishness, pettiness, pride, and apathy. Look upon us with compassionate and patient eyes.

Restore me. Show me the joy of salvation. Create a new, willing, positive, living spirit within me. Forgive me. Have mercy on me. Cleanse me and welcome

me back into your loving arms, today, and again, and again, and again.

TAKING UP THE WORKS OF MERCY in NEW WAYS IV - Give drink to the Thirsty

L: We together, symbolically enter the ancient Lenten fast – this year not only ‘giving up’ but ‘taking up’ as well … Not just giving up hurtful words, but taking up kind words; Not just giving up depravity, but taking up gratitude;

Not just giving up anger, but taking up patience;

Not just giving up pessimism, but taking up hope;

Not just giving up worrying, but taking up trust in God;

Not just giving up complaining, but taking up simplicity;

Not just giving up bitterness, but taking up joy;

Not just giving up selfishness, but taking up compassion;

Not just giving up grudges, but taking up reconciliation;

Not just giving up endless chatter, but taking up listening;

Not just giving up ourselves, but taking up Christ. (Pope Francis)

Hebrew Psalter Psalm 51:1-12 Common English Bible

Psalm 51 - For the music leader. A psalm of David, when the prophet Nathan came to him just after he had been with Bathsheba.

51 Have mercy on me, God, according to your faithful love! Wipe away my wrong-doings according to your great compassion! 2 Wash me completely clean of my guilt; purify me from my sin! 3 Because I know my wrongdoings, my sin is always right in front of me. 4 I’ve sinned against you — you alone. I’ve committed evil in your sight. That’s why you are justified when you render your verdict, completely correct when you issue your judgment. 5 Yes, I was born in guilt, in sin, from the moment my mother conceived me.

6 And yes, you want truth in the most hidden places; you teach me wisdom in the most secret space. 7 Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and celebration again; let the bones you crushed rejoice once more. 9 Hide your face from my sins; wipe away my guilty deeds!

10 Create a clean heart for me, God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me! 11 Please don’t throw me out of your presence; please don’t take your holy spirit away from me. 12 Return the joy of your salvation to me and sustain me with a willing spirit.

L: You have heard a song to the Lord P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon Have Mercy On Me David W. Key, Sr.

Response God Help the Outcast Menken/Schwartz (1996)

I don't know if you can hear me; Or if you're even there; I don't know if you would listen to a my humble prayer;

They tell me I am just an outcast; I shouldn't speak to you; But still I see your face and wonder; Were you once an outcast too?

God help the outcast; Hungry from birth; Show them the mercy they don't find on Earth;

The lost and forgotten, they look to You still; God help the outcast; Or nobody will.

I ask for nothing; I can get by; But I know so many less lucky than I; Please help my people; The poor and down-trod;

I thought we all were the children of God.

I don’t know if there’s a reason why some are blessed, some not. Why the few You seem to favor, they fear us, flee us, try not to see us!

God help the outcast, the tattered, the torn, Seeking an answer to why they were born.

Winds of misfortune have blown them about. You made the outcast, don’t cast them out.

The poor and unlucky, the week and the odd. I thought we all were the children of God.

The Giving, *Presentation and Blessing of our Gifts

L: We give thanks for all that God has given us. P: May God bless all that we offer: our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

~ Pastoral Prayer ~ Lord’s Prayer ~

Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, And the power and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.
