FUTURES

The music industry is at the tipping-point of a new era of growth. Recognising this, the Resonate Futures conference will explore both the opportunities and challenges this brings for retailers, publishers, promoters, managers and label bosses. The programme is designed to give direct access to industry professionals who have agreed to share their time and experience with participants through a number of workshops, masterclasses and panel discussions. Experts from all aspects of the music business will be on hand to provide you with valuable advice that you can use.

Contributors to the conference include legendary singer-songwriter, activist and radio broadcaster, Tom Robinson best known for 2-4-6-8 Motorway, Glad To Be Gay and War Baby and Jupiter Ace (Gregory Ferguson). Renowned across the house music world for his fresh and distinctive sound, Jupiter Ace has been busy remixing for Ministry of Sound, Fatboy Slim, and Sony/BMG to name but a few.

Enjoy an informal get-together after the conference with the speakers and delegates in Cafe Nervosa. It’s the perfect opportunity to pick their brains, make new contacts and ask any burning questions.

Don’t worry though, it’s not all work. We’ve programmed over 30 acts to perform over the weekend to give delegates and the public the chance to hear some great local talent.

The Nerve Centre’s Resonate project, in partnership with Blast Furnace Recording Studio helped capture the musical talent, energy and spirit of the city during its City of Culture tenure by providing a range of recording opportunities, such as locally based professional facilities and roving, mobile ‘pop-up’ recording studios. The Resonate project was also on hand to document many of the major musical happenings of the City of Culture year, from Celtronic to Culture Tech.

As part of our partnership with Generator NI, we’ve created a bespoke, academy style event to give aspiring musicians a behind the scenes look at careers in the music industry. The academy will be hosted by Rigsy (David O’Reilly) from BBC Radio Ulster’s Across the Line and a panel of some of the finest musical talents from all over Northern Ireland including Anthony Wright, Verse Chorus Verse and Fiona O’Kane, with a headline performance from Glenn Rosborough.

Steve Farris (Polar Patrol Publishing)Steve co-runs Polar Patrol Publishing, a pro-active music publishing service for songwriters, artists and musicians set up by Jonny, Nathan and Gary from Snow Patrol. The small team offers a hands on approach to publishing with the aim of nurturing new songwriting talent and artist development.

Owen Strathern (Songwriter - General Fiasco / Oh Volcano)After announcing a hiatus in early 2013, Owen and Edna Strathern, of General Fiasco fame have embarked on a new music venture, Oh Volcano. Having been nominated for the Kerrang Awards, played festivals and gigs all over the globe and supported the likes of Snow Patrol, one half of the foursome are back under a new guise with a much more progressive sound, and Owen’s very recognisable vocals.

Jeff Robinson (Jeff Robinson PR)Jeff Robinson PR is an award winning, full-service, marketing and publicity agency based in Belfast. As well as coordinating media campaigns for artists such as Two Door Cinema Club, Elbow, Biffy Clyro, Tom Jones, Florence & The Machine, Paolo Nutini and 30 Seconds To Mars, their music roster includes household names such as The 1975, The Answer and Benjamin Francis Leftwich.

Kathryn Mason (Kathryn Mason PR)With over 24 year’s experience in the PR industry, Kathryn has developed campaigns for Take That, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston and Foo Fighters. After being headhunted by Universal Music Ireland in 2002, Kathryn has since set up an independent company, providing clients with tailored campaigns to find the right audiences.

Grace Loughrey (Oscillator PR)Grace Loughrey is the founder of Oscillator PR. Having successfully launched Rams’ Pocket Radio in 2013 and helping Northern Irish artists land airtime on BBC 6 Music, her day-to-day duties involve managing the social media channels for a range of Northern Irish artists.

14:15 - 15:30 Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music)Tom Robinson is a London-based broadcaster and songwriter, best known for ‘2-4-6-8 Motorway’, Glad To Be Gay and War Baby. He has co-written songs with Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Dan Hartman and Manu Katché and has released 14 albums since 1978. After winning his first gold Sony Radio Academy Award for BBC London, he has hosted weekly programmes on BBC Radio 6, with a particular emphasis on new and emerging artists.

An evening of new music hosted by legendary singer-songwriter, activist and radio broadcaster, Tom Robinson.

Ryan VailRyan Vail cut his teeth at the tender age of 16 in the city’s groundbreaking turntablist scene, where his love of hip hop and drum and bass, and also the crackly, analogue charms and possibilities of vinyl and synths,

found root. After working for a few years on melodic, instrumental tracks, Ryan hooked up with multi-instrumentalist and singer Katie Cosgrove, and the two began to sing and play live together. Starting small at local gigs, they incorporated Katie’s flute and guitar, bringing an organic balance to Ryan’s synthesized, propulsive beats. The pair have recently gone on to support acts such as Jon Hopkins, David Kitt, Boxcutter and Luke Vibert among others.

Best Boy GripEoin O’Callaghan is the man and the voice behind ‘Best Boy Grip’. He is a talented songwriter who hails from Derry~Londonderry. Best Boy Grip’s debut EP ‘Barbara’ was released to critical acclaim. Best Boy Grip has shared the stage with the likes of Pete Doherty, Bronagh Gallagher, The Undertones, Mick Flannery and Django Django to name a few.

The Clameens The Clameens are a combination of a variety of musical influences, from the memorable guitar riffs of The Strokes, to the raspy vocals of Kings of Leon. The young teen band are the epitome of honest, upbeat pop rock and the band on everyone’s lips in the Northern Irish music scene. Made up of brother’s Ethan, Hayden, Sean and Ryan, The Clameens have achieved much in the past year, having performed alongside well-known and influential acts in the industry, including The Libertines’ front man Pete Doherty.

11:00 - 12:30 Rock Music Production with Tommy McLaughlin (Attica Audio Recording)Tommy McLaughlin is the owner of Attica Audio Recording in the hills of north west Donegal and guitarist in Villagers. He has an ear for outstanding Irish creative talent and counts Foy Vance and Soak amongst his clients. Here, Tommy will lay open some of his most famous mixes and talk through the creative process of creating contemporary rock music.

14:00 - 15:30 Masterclass with Gregory Ferguson (Jupiter Ace)Gregory Ferguson is one of the most exciting electronic and dance music producers to emerge from Ireland in recent years. Better known as Jupiter Ace, the 27-year-old is renowned across the house music world for his fresh and distinctive sound. Since the worldwide success of ‘1000 Years’, a funky house tune with an unforgettable vocal, Jupiter has been busy remixing for Ministry of Sound, Fatboy Slim and Sony/BMG to name but a few.

Saturday, March 2214:00 - 19:00 SYNC – Nerve Centre Takes To The Streets Craft Village, Shipquay Street

To mark the first Anniversary of the Nerve Centre’s SYNC - Music Promise in the Community a stunning musical showcase will see the mantel of Music City lifted then rocked unmercifully by the next generation of young musicians from all over the city.

The Craft Village Courtyard will provide the backdrop and witness the SYNC graduates flaunting their newly acquired chops by performing sets comprising original material, DJ sets and classic covers.

Find us in the open air for a fantastic free evening of youth, creativity and music.
