Sandbelt lawns - The storyThe grass base of many lawns in Melbourne’s south-east are Couch, Kikuyu and more recently Buffalo, otherwise known as WARM SEASON turfgrass. These grass types have excellent heat and drought tolerance and reproduce from runners, rather than seed. In full sun, they grow actively from early summer to mid autumn, before heading into dormancy for the cold months. In shade regions, these grasses struggle to grow or may die back. During winter dormancy, growth is at a standstill, they suffer wear damage, loss of leaf and color pales. Inevitably annual winter broadleaf and grass weeds like chickweed, oxalis, poa and panic veldt grass take hold.
The most common are lawns with sparse or no warm season grass base. These areas are usually dominated with unsightly grass and broadleaf weeds that repopulate each season from reproductive seed drop.
A lawn for all seasonsA strategy for an ideal all-season lawn in the south-east is to:
a. During the colder months: Turf reseed™ with cool season turfgrass with the aim of maintaining your new lawn into the distant future.
b. Summer: If coverage of the warm season grass is widespread, promote its spreading growth to retain a drought tolerant grass base over summer.
Turf reseeding™ is the process of drilling seed into and under dormant couch or kikuyu, or sprayed out or existing old lawn.
The main COOL SEASON turfgrass varieties are turf-type fine leaf perennial ryegrass, rhizomatous tall fescue and fine fescues. These grasses make a beautifully rich, vibrant colored, fine-leaf lawn with excellent cool season growth, wear and shade tolerance. Without soil moisture, their Achilles heel is tolerance to prolonged drought and extreme heat.
These perennial turfgrasses may persist 4-seasons with easy common sense care and are established from seed from early autumn to late spring. The best turf-type fine leaf perennial ryegrass examples are the stadium ovals used by the AFL in Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Launceston, the VRC racetracks, Lord's cricket ground and Wimbledon.

Winter-spring reseeding Seedling emergence from Turf reseeding™ is at 7 to 10 days with first cut at 28-35 days. Stunning lawn cover may be retained year round with a little aftercare and by frequent short watering through the extremes of summer.
Our Turf reseeder™ is one of a kind. It accurately drills seed into and under existing lawn and bare ground for ideal seed-soil contact and seed wet-up, resulting in dense and uniform establishment. Vertical blades slice into existing lawn, creating a slice opening; depositing and securing seed at correct depth and rate, with minimal lawn disruption or soil tillage.
Minimal soil disturbance ensures resident weed seeds remain dormant and weed germination is minimal. Turfseed is well covered, protected from birds and flotation; and is mostly free from weed seed competition.

Sandbelt soils Whilst the Sandbelt soils are a mixed blessing for our famous bunkered golf courses, they present great challenges for your average home lawn grower. When left untreated, here's why.
Description: dark grey over light grey sands free of lime, over yellow grey sand and occasional 'coffee rock'.
1. Very low water holding capacityWater gravitates down the profile rapidly. What little is left has loose adherence to the silica sand particles (silica has a low surface area to volume ratio and little external charge to hold H2O). Lawns require frequent but short waterings.
2. Hydrophobic and non-wetting Very common within a lawn area. A waxy coating over the sand particle repels and channels water laterally with water failing to penetrate the surface or reach the root zone.
3. Low pH (mild to strongly acidic)Low pH chemically locks up nutrient availability. Shifting pH to neutral pH 7 with lime products unlocks soil nutrients. Low pH also restricts plant thrift and planting options.
4. Very low in organic matter (OM)Mineralisation (breakdown) of OM or humous is a sustained source of slow release ionic nutrients essential for growth. Typically, the darker the topsoil the higher the OM. White-light grey sands are very low in OM. Organic matter also contributes to high water holding capacity.
5. Very low cation exchange capacity (C.E.C)Sands are virtually void of clay minerals. Clay minerals have abundant negative surface charge to 'hold and exchange' with plant roots cations like phosphorus, calcium and potassium. Clay minerals are also a primary source of trace element ions and provide surface area and polarity for adherence of water molecules.
6. Extremely deficient in nutrients - macro and trace elementsA symptom of: 1. low OM 2. no clay content 3. low pH 4. sandstone parent material 5. free drainage of water adhering anions (nitrate) 6. naturally low in phosphorus.
8. Very low microbial activity An active microbial environment is highly beneficial for mineralisation, nutrient cycling, pathogen control, earthworms soil structure and rhizosphere biology.
7. StructurelessParticles don't cling together, easily worked, prone to wind erosion.

SOIL REMEDIATION OPTIONS
It's most likely your soil-type is typical of the Sandbelt and that pro-active corrective measures will be beneficial. We remediate for most soil problems listed above. Otherwise, a soil analysis will objectively describe the state of your soil and provide recommendations for optimum soil health.

Our lawn renewal know-how is new and innovative. In June, 2014Citywide Open spaces as contract service provider to Bayside council parks and gardens suggested that we demonstrate our capability.
The degraded front and back lawns of Black Rock House on Ebden Avenue were chosen as the renovation test site. We bore full costs including seed, labour and machinery for what was a stunning lawn transformation (see below and adjacent photos). No weed control was undertaken. The new lawns are a widely enjoyed public amenity and our legacy for the residents of Bayside.

Black Rock House 2014
Professional lawn reseedingTurf reseeding™ or Overseeding, is widely practiced by golf and sportsfield curators worldwide in regions where neither the 'warm season' or 'cool season' grasses are perfectly adapted - like in Melbourne's Sandbelt! Each year in autumn, sports fields and golf courses throughout the temperate regions of Australia are oversown with transitional ryegrass to improve playability.Bayside alone have more than 35 ovals and playing surfaces scheduled for autumn overseeding.
About usreseedmylawn.com.au is a new and innovative lawn renewal service and knowledge strategy promoting the utilisation of ‘warm season’ and reseeding of ‘cool season’ turf grasses.
Our aim is to pass on knowledge to Melbourne householders that a stunning new lawn is easily achieved, is rewarding to grow, and is now affordable at a fraction of the cost of an instant turf SOD renovation.
Know-How: We have a lifetime of practiced field agronomy experience coming off a life science academic base. We’ve developed unique strategies, technology and know-how for stunning home lawn renewal at low cost.
Technology: Our Turf reseeder™ machine is the only one of its kind. We've trialed, developed and retro-engineered the Turf reseeder™, proving extraordinary turf grass establishment over a range of conditions.
Stunning results: From start up in June 2014, we achieved stunning results having reseeded numerous Bayside household lawns as well as the Enchanted Adventure Garden lawns at Arthurs Seat. We are also working with local authorities to improve public green space assets.
Innovation: Our business is unique and it's a first. We are science and evidenced based having merged new technology, know-how, seed science, agronomy and education into a unique lawn renewal service.
Nature & environment: We advocate environmental, soil and nature's science. We endorse organic, biological and nature based methods.
Quality driven: We use the latest breeding advance in turfgrass, including varieties that resist insects and produce rhizomes. All seed is certified, the highest standard for seed quality. All soil remediation and aftercare products are professional turf grade.
