Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden,

CERN staff ~3000 persons: physicists, engineers, technicians,

administrators, fire brigaders, etc. CERN Users: some 10000 visiting scientists (half of particle

physicists worldwide) from 580 universities, 85 nationalities.

Research target is ”everything”: search for new particles/phenomena,

high-precision measurements of know particles/phenomena Many different kinds of detectors, many (O(100M)) electronic channels Large so-called dynamic range: measure energies and momenta

O(100 MeV) several TeV. Large solid angle coverage. Position resolution O(10 m), diameter 10-25 m, length 25-40 m
