QUESTIONNAIRE RESEARCH COMPARISON (INTERNET OR

BOOKS) • Some question are easy to answer through internet and some are easy to answer from the

textbooks. For the questionnaire I did, I mostly had to use the internet for to find the answers because the textbooks didn’t have the definition that I needed to answer and explain the question.

• To find out about a person and company about different media companies and other fraction, using the internet is better because it gives you answer almost instantly and there over hundreds and thousand to look from, so you can find out the best and correct answer for you question. However the internet is not always correct but is usually reliable in confidence of being correct. Textbooks are almost always correct however, some of them are outdated if they are old.

• In my opinion books are better to find answer because most of them are reliable and has a lot of good information however i prefer using the internet because it is super fast and most of it is actually reliable information if you know what sites and pages you should look at.

AVATAR POSTER CAMPAIGN 2Avatar released in 2009, now the largest box office selling film of all time. The seemingly human like face is blue which implies the films genre: sci-fi. The small glittery details across her face also show there is some magic and fantasy involved. The image of the eye is very bright and contrasts the dark background of the poster making it stand out, it is staring directly at the audience making it engaging and almost intense. The characters femininity is evoked through emphasis on pretty features like her lips, cheekbones and eyelashes- focus on aesthetically pleasing characters often signal romance storylines. Based on these factors the poster will obviously then appeal to people who enjoy the highlighted genres. This will entice many film go-ers based on the vast success of the Directors previous film- a high quality director should mean the film is worth watching. The title caption is isolated and simplistic, further creating enigma; it gives nothing away and leaves the audience wanting to know more

Page 16: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

AVATAR POSTER CAMPAIGN 3The bottom of the poster he is one of the main characters in the also shows some of where the film is film. It also shows that the humans are set, it shows it to be quite a mystical somehow going to be joined with the world which implies to the audience Avatars to become one and this interests that this is set on another planet. To the audience as they will want to learn the right of that shows the forest to more about the plot of the film. Also bybe burnt down and destroyed this having Sam Worthington as the main implies some kind of war is going to focus of the poster is shows that the film happen where the mystical world is company are relying on his popularity as going to be damaged. The title of the film is in at he action genre and the fact it is set very futuristic metallic style in another world could appeal to font which reinforces the idea boys as they like the idea of fighting that this film is set in some and something involving conflict. At the bottom of the poster it says ‘A James Cameron Film’ this will and suggests that maybe this ranges as it features a well known draw in an audience as he is a very popular film director, this was also his actor and it has a plot that ages over planet and its inhabitants are first film after his massive success from the film Titanic so the audience very at one with nature.12 will be able to understand.

REVIEW BY NONSEQUITUR_1“A film with the scope of James Cameron's Avatar was always going to be a risk both artistically and financially, especially in today's economic climate. Whether it will pay off monetarily is a question only time can answer, but this viewer can at the very least attest to it being an artistic triumph.

Avatar brings us as close as cinema ever has to actually visiting an alien world. The beautiful environs, the exotic creatures and incredibly lifelike natives of Pandora arrest the senses, visually, aurally and emotionally. The world in Avatar is the true star of the show. The amount of detail and work that has gone into bringing this new world alive is seriously impressive, and it will be a while before we see anything that overtakes it in scope and quality. WETA Workshop and ILM have truly outdone themselves.

Relative newcomer, Aussie Sam Worthington provides a solid human heart amongst all the science-fiction/fantasy beauty and Zoe Saldana gives an impressive performance as the 8 foot tall Na'vi, Neytiri. Even though the characters they both play are blue, giant, catlike aliens, they managed to evoke a chemistry and likability that pierces through the special effects.

That's not to say that everything is perfect. The story is basic and dare I say, clichéd and predictable. We have seen it plenty of times in all forms of media. The bad guys are cartoonishly evil, and sadly paper thin. The love story, while charming, is also clichéd despite being between man and alien. But in the face of these shortcomings, Avatar is a success because its storytelling lies in the brilliant visuals.

Avatar is a beautiful piece of film and a true event. It does exactly what cinema was always intended to - it takes us away from our problems and worries for a few hours and gives us memorable images which will undoubtedly and deservedly enter into the cultural lexicon to stay for the foreseeable future.”

MOST POPULAR RESEARCH METHOD TO FIND AVATAR’S

AUDIENCE PROFILE.• Questionnaire is the most commonly used method of gathering information

because it is less costly way to reach more people, including people at some distance. Depending upon the method of distribution, it can be swiftly done and data analysis can begin right away. The questionnaire keeps away from interviewer bias, guiding and cues that can impact the legitimacy and reliability of the data collection.

• Survey is also very common because you can get different kind of answer from the audience to find out exactly what they like about avatar. It is cheap easy to distribute and collect data not time consuming, and at the end of the day you get the result you want. In survey you can ask about their gender, if they liked movie or not and if they would like the see further James Cameron movie.

TRAILER OF THE MOVIE AND REVIEWShttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt04 99549/ Trailer

It arrives as a disabled Marine, played by Terminator: Salvation’s Sam Worthington, travels to an alien planet (it’s called Pandora) and gets telepathically ported into the body of a bright-blue humanoid of gangly, elfin appearance. Avatar has a basic anti-imperialist plot. Humans have conquered space and found an alien planet: “Pandora” (subtle!) They are, of course, interested in harvesting the rich natural resources of the planet, but fragile human lungs can’t handle the atmosphere on Pandora. Fortunately, former Marine Jake was paralyzed from the waist down in battle. With nothing to lose, he volunteers for the “Avatar” project, which transports his mind into an alien “Na’vi” body: now he’s ten feet tall and has blue skin that sparkles in the sun, a la Twilight But he falls in love with a female Na’vi and is torn between his humanity and his new alien friends. Then war breaks out.

WHAT IS DOCUMENTARY?• “A DOCUMENTARY FILM IS A MOVIE

THAT ATTEMPTS TO DOCUMENT REALITY. EVEN THOUGH THE SCENES ARE CAREFULLY CHOSEN AND ARRANGED, USUALLY THROUGH EDITING AFTER FILMING, THEY ARE NOT SCRIPTED AND THE PEOPLE IN THE MOVIE ARE NOT TYPICALLY ACTORS. SOMETIMES, A DOCUMENTARY FILM MAY RELY ON VOICE-OVER NARRATION TO DESCRIBE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE FOOTAGE; IN OTHER FILMS, THE IMAGES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES WITHOUT COMMENTARY. A DOCUMENTARY OFTEN INCLUDES INTERVIEWS WITH PEOPLE IN THE FILM FOR ADDITIONAL CONTEXT OR INFORMATION.” Source: http://

CREATE A NEW DOCUMENTARY- TASK 3

• My documentary will be on censorship in films and why it’s censored. The GOOD THING ABOUT CENSORSHIP AND THE BAD THINGS.

• Film censorship can be generally defined as the control of information or thoughts. Censorship is used by government or relevant organizations to put a stop to the distribution of material that is not fit for public consumption. In wartime, information about troop actions, impending battle plans etc. Would be suppressed.

• Censorship is the editing of material from a written or visual presentation. Sometimes the word censored is used to indicate that material was removed in the interest of morality, or would be offensive to the intended audience.

• WHY IS CENSORSHIP GOOD?

• Censorship is good since all the material that is explicit and of obscene nature viewing can be controlled. All unstable topics that are likely to aggravate readers can also be controlled in order to avoid tension and hatred.

• WHY IS CENSORSHIP BAD?

• It hides the truth from people and it either blocks what was meant to be there but also it is likely to give false

information to the public.

Page 23: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY RESEARCH ON CENSORSHIP.

• The primary research was useful from survey because I got the answers I needed on how censorship has effected their daily lives and if they think censorship should be allowed or banned. This took me only few hours to get the answers which is not that long and it helped me get accurate information on censorship from the public.

• The secondary research was defiantly internet because there is a two sides saying whether censorship is good or bad. To find out good information it only took me couple of minutes which is fast however it is not 100% reliable. Also in the internet you can share your opinion so more people are likely to comment on what they like or dislike about censorship.

Page 24: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

FOCUS GROUP• A focus group is a moderated discussion group anywhere from 6 to 10

participants. Each participant is chosen after filling in a screener questionnaire, which allows the researcher to ensure a good mix of people represent the target audience for the project. Focus groups are used in traditional market research to gather target audience opinions and attitudes about certain products, services or concepts.

• Advantages

• Focus groups provide a valuable method to gather customer feedback and opinion on different ideas and concepts.

• Disadvantages

• Focus groups have come under some criticism for their inability to remove the potential for ‘group think’ where some participants will be swayed by the opinions of other more dominant members and feel under pressure to conform

Page 25: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

HISTORY OF CENSORSHIPS

There was a public debate about what people are allowed to show in their movies and was morally fit to control the content of its own products. As early as 1909 the people's institute in new york city created "the new york board of motion picture censorship. This means that all of their films to the board and to not release any films unless approved by it. If it’s not approved then you can’t release the movie. The board was called "the national board of censorship" but then was changed to "the national board of review". And finally the board's "seal of approval"

CENSORSHIPS QUESTIONNAIRE FOR FOCUS GROUP

• What controls, if any, should there be over the media?

• Should there be more censorship? Should there be less censorship?

• What is your opinion of sexual and/or violent content in tv, films and video games?

• Which is it more important to control - sexual or violent scenes? Why should they be controlled?

• What effect, if any, do you think that sexual or violent scenes on the media have on people?

• Do you think people were any less violent before the existence of television, films and video games?

• Do you think censorship is a good thing or a bad thing? What are your reasons?

Page 27: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

INTERNET FILTERS

• The first way companies go about filtering “inappropriate content” is by having a team of human researchers reviewing thousands of websites looking for not only trigger words but also pictures and subject matter that may be “inappropriate

• The second way that internet filtering companies compile their databases is through the use of electronic scanning devices, which continually browse the internet, looking for key words such as “porn” or any other explicitives.

• Along with the feature of updating one’s filtering software, parents or whomever is doing the filtering has the option to manually set boundaries on what content is allowed to be viewed and what isn’t allowed.

• Also, one of the most common internet filtering software in the world, cyber patrol®,is offered to customers for the home, the office, or even the school

BOOKS CENSORSHIP• “Book censorship is when a book

is removed from the shelf of a library. It can be enacted at the national or subnational level, and can carry legal penalties for their infraction. Books may also be challenged at a local, community level. As a result, books can be removed from schools or libraries, although these bans do not extend outside of that area.”

Self Assessment

• By looking at my self presenting in front of class, I was pretty confident. I had good eye contact with both camera and the audience. I had a lot of information on my PowerPoint. Also it was not just filled with information to bore the audience, I also had a lot of picture which made the PowerPoint looking good and quite fun. The thing I need to improve is on when I got mixed between primary and secondary research about my documentary which was censorship. That might have lost me some mark but now that’s something I could improve on.

Page 32: Research method LeveL 2 BTEC

This is the feedback from the people from my class and what they thought about my PowerPoint, they have said good things and what things I can improve on. This will help me because I can find out what more things I need to add on the PowerPoint. Those people from pictures are Eugene, Kanak, Roberto and Laurence.
