th

October, 2012

Futureintech is an initiative of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) and is funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. The aim is to promote careers and lift tertiary enrolments in technology, engineering and science qualifications and ensure that these tertiary qualifications remain relevant to the needs of the industries that will employ the graduates. The Visiting Industry Professional (VIP) Scheme provides funding for senior professionals from technology, engineering and science-based industries to spend up to three weeks in a tertiary institution. The VIP Scheme is managed nationally by Futureintech, and the goal is to encourage on-going partnerships between industry and education. The role of the visiting industry professional can be teaching, advising on research and curriculum, or a mixture of both. The expected benefits of the scheme include:

Academic staff learning about private sector developments – knowledge which could help improve teaching and research

Tertiary staff becoming more knowledgeable and stronger advocates for careers in technology, engineering and science

Students getting a sense of what to expect in the workforce and what skills employers are looking for in graduates

It is anticipated that the visit/project will occur in the semester or academic year following a successful application. At the end of a VIP scheme project the tertiary institution and industry professional are each required to briefly describe and evaluate their completed VIP project. Futureintech may use this material to publish case studies of successful projects to promote the Scheme.
