The research essay is your longest major assignment in EN 102. It is the culmination of everything you have been reading, writing, and researching in blogs, articles, readings, Research Ready, and your annotated bibliography. Your topic is the one you have chosen and must be a researched based argument on a controversial topic. It should follow MLA formatting and citation practices.

0-85Evidence Is your argument well supported with specific examples and explanations? Do you cite at least 3 secondary sources? Did you include primary research? Are your sources credible? Does your works cited page include ONLY the sources you cited in the text of your essay? Do your internet sources score high on the CRAAP rubric?

0-35 Language Use Does your writing allow readers to move easily through the text? Do you use sophisticated stylistic features such as figurative language? Did you eliminate the fluff? Do your grammar errors take away from the overall meaning of the narrative? Did you take time to proofread your essay? Is your essay interesting for your reader?

0-30Organization/Arrangement Do you have a clearly stated argument (thesis statement) that provides the underlying structure for the writing? Is the overall organization strong? Is the organization within paragraphs clear? Do your paragraphs contain a topic sentence that indicates content? Do you use transitions that move readers smoothly from one idea to the next?

0-25Conclusion/Discussion Does your conclusion give the reader something to think about? Does your conclusion present a call to action? Did you use at least one of the conclusion strategies? Is your conclusion engaging? Did you complete the conclusion draft (Blog 13) on time? Did you participate in Peer Review #1?
