This two-day conference is intended to provide an opportunity to raise aware-ness of new healthcare trends, while supporting quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research and innovation at the bedside.
The 2016 conference program features a wide range of topics focusing on inno-vation, inquiry and improving patient care. We are pleased to welcome keynote speaker Kathy Malloch, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, a recognized expert in innovation, leadership and the development of effective evidence-based processes and sys-tems for patient care. The conference will also feature an impressive range of other speakers, podium and poster presentations representing researchers, clini-cians, educators, and students; and invaluable networking opportunities.

Continuing Education Contact Hours:
Nurses will be awarded 5.83 ANCC contact hours for participation in day one of the program and 6.5 ANCC contact hours for participating in day two of the program. UCLA Health is accredited as a provider of con-tinuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 12511 for 7.0 contact hours for day one of the program and 7.5 contact hours for day two of the program. Please note: Participants will be required to complete an online evaluation form following each applicable day of the event to receive continuing education credits.

Keynote Speaker
Kathy Malloch, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, is a recognized expert in leadership and the development of effective evidence-based processes and systems for patient care. Her uncanny focus on accountability and results is the hallmark of her practice. Her expertise has been useful to many organizations across the coun-try.
A nationally known writer and speaker, Dr. Malloch has been a registered nurse for over 40 years. Kathy
has published extensively in proctored health journals. She is a frequent presenter and author on leadership topics, healthcare innovation, professional nursing practice, and pa-tient classification systems.
Dr. Malloch served as the first program director for the Arizona State University, College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Master's in Healthcare Innovation program. This inno-vative, multidisciplinary program is the first of its kind in the country. She continues to teach in the leadership of innovation track in the nursing doctoral programs at Arizona State University. Most recently, Kathy and Tim Porter-O'Grady created the Executive DNP program at OSU-College of Nursing, Columbus, OH. Kathy is the designer of the Expert Nurse Estimation Patient Classification System (ENEPCS), an innovative model to integrate the role of the professional nurse in daily nurse-patient staffing to achieve the best outcomes. In 2008, ENEPCS was purchased by API Healthcare, a GE Company, and is now integrated into their suite of staffing, schedul-ing, time and attendance, and business analytics products.
Dr. Malloch is a graduate of Wayne State University, College of Nursing, received an MBA from Oakland University and a PhD in nursing from the University of Colorado. She is a member of the American Academy of Nursing.

Quanna Batiste, DNP, HCSM, RN is the chief nursing officer of ambulatory care at UCLA
Health. She oversees nursing care at more than 180 ambulatory clinics across three coun-ties. Dr. Batiste has worked to strengthen the nurse’s role in the ambulatory clinics and to
provide nurses with a mechanism for reviewing and improving their professional scope
and standards of practice and improved patient care across the ambulatory clinics.
Mary-Lynn Brecht, PhD teaches statistics and provides statistical support in the UCLA
School of Nursing. She recently concluded a long-term follow-up study of methampheta-mine users to examine drug use/recovery trajectories. She has experience developing/
adapting and applying quantitative research methodologies, with emphasis in the areas of
drug-abuse, health systems, and treatment evaluation research.
Katherine Brown-Saltzman, MA, RN is the co-director of the UCLA Health System Ethics
Center and an assistant clinical professor at the UCLA School of Nursing. Since 1975, her practice has been in end of life care; her work is now focused on clinical ethics and her ar-
ea of research is centered on timely assessment of and interdisciplinary intervention in
ethical issues.
Robert A. Cherry, MD, MS, FACS, FACHE is the chief medical and quality officer for UCLA
Health System, responsible for quality improvement efforts. Dr. Cherry has successfully achieved major accomplishments in clinical quality outcomes, process redesign, and
patient safety systems; and was named one of the "100 Hospital and Health System CMOs
to Know" in Becker's Hospital Review.
Sandra Dewar, MSN, RN is the clinical nurse specialist and clinical director of the UCLA
Seizure Disorder Center. Her current research interest lies in how patients with drug refractory epilepsy perceive treatment risks and make decisions about brain surgery.
She is an incoming PhD student and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future Scholar of
Nursing.
Lee Galuska, PhD, RN, NE-BC is a nurse leader with more than 30 years of experience in
clinical, educational and administrative roles. As director of nursing practice, education and research for UCLA Health, she provides leadership for the professional development
of more than 3200 nurses, the UCLA Health Magnet® Program for excellence in nursing, as
well as the programs supporting evidence-based practice and research.
Karen Grimley, Ph.D., MBA, RN, FACHE is the chief nursing executive for UCLA Health
and associate dean in the UCLA School of Nursing. She is responsible for the overall deliv-ery and management of nursing professional practice, care delivery methods, education,
professional development, research, administration and clinical services.
Brenda Hardin-Wike, MSN, RN, CCRN, CCNS is currently the unit director for the cardio-
thoracic intensive care unit at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Among her many activities, Ms. Hardin-Wike serves as an ACLS and BLS instructor, Beacon reviewer for the
American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), AACN Alarm Think Tank member,
and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Accreditation on-site evaluator.

Rose Healy, MS, RN, CNS is director of inpatient diabetes education for UCLA Health System
and diabetes clinical nurse specialist for Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. She is responsi-ble for ensuring the safe delivery of care to patients through standardization of policies,
guidelines and protocols. She provides consultation to services caring for hyperglycemic pa-
tients. Her research interests include patient education and glucose metric outcomes.
Patricia Jakel, MSN, RN, AOCN is co-chair of the Nursing Practice Research Council, and
an advance practice nurse for the solid tumor program at UCLA Healthcare. She received the Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year Award in 1997 from the Los Angeles Chapter of the On-
cology Nursing Society. Ms. Jakel is a member of several professional organizations, and is
involved in nursing research looking at moral distress, compassion fatigue and ethics.
Priscilla Kehoe, PhD is a neuroscientist studying the enduring effects of early stress. As di-
rector of research at UCLA School of Nursing, she mentors, assists and facilitates faculty in writing grants and research manuscripts. She has a demonstrated record of successful and
productive mentorships and collaborations with UCLA faculty.
Jillian Kenney, BSN, RN, OCN is a staff nurse with the Solid Oncology Program at UCLA San-
ta Monica Medical Center. She was a co-investigator for a research project examining the use of technology to combat compassion fatigue; which was presented as a podium presentation
at the 2015 Oncology Nursing Society Congress in Orlando, and was accepted for publication
for the winter edition of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing.
Toyin Lawal, MSN, RN-CCCTM is the director of ambulatory nursing, assisting the chief
nursing officer, ambulatory nursing. In this leadership role, Toyin leads, directs, monitors and evaluates the delivery of health and clinical services across UCLA Health’s large network of
clinics and medical practices. Toyin is a dedicated leader at UCLA and is recognized by others
for always putting the patient in the center of all her decisions.
Betty Lee, MN, RN, CNS, CMSRN is a clinical nurse specialist of adult medicine at UCLA San-
ta Monica. She also serves as co-chair of the Clinical Practice Council, Exemplary Professional Practice Falls Prevention group, and CNIII Clinical Ladder Council.
Meyer Luskin and his wife, Renee, are longtime supporters of UCLA. Among their many philanthropic endeavors, in 2011, they donated $100 million to support aca-demic programs and capital improvements, which made the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center a reality. We are pleased to be among the Center’s first confer-ences, and to welcome Mr. Luskin to open our 15th Annual Research and Evidence -Based Practice Conference.
Robert Martin, PsyD, has been helping leaders, teams, and organizations improve their
effectiveness for over 17 years. He does this by using hands-on “show-learn-do” methods to transfer lean culture to them. His methods are practical and effective, but grounded by edu-
cation, experience, and science.

John C. Mazziotta, MD, PhD is vice chancellor, UCLA Health Sciences and CEO, UCLA Health.
Dr. Mazziotta has published more than 260 research papers and eight texts, and received nu-merous awards and honors. He has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National
Academy of Sciences and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians.
Norma D. McNair, PhD, RN, ACNS, CNRN, CCRN is a clinical nurse specialist with over 30 years
of experience in the role. She has mentored nurses in evidence-based practice and research projects for over ten years.
Pamela Miller, PhD, RN, ACNP, CNS is a senior nurse scientist for the research and evidence-
based practice program at UCLA Health. She continues to build capacity and infrastructure that supports research and evidence-based practice activities, including oversight of the Nursing
Practice Research Council and Clinical Practice Council. Dr. Miller’s research expertise includes
quantitative methodology, statistical methods, and clinical outcomes.
Adey Nyamathi, PhD, ANP, FAAN serves as the Audrienne H. Moseley Endowed Chair in Com-
munity Health Research, distinguished professor, and associate dean for research and interna-tional scholarship at the UCLA School of Nursing. In addition, she is principal investigator of
nine NIH-funded RO1s, and other grants, funded by NIDA, NIAAA, and NICHD.
Pamela Nye, RN, MS, CNRN, SCRN, CNS is the clinical nurse specialist for neuroscience and stroke coordinator at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center in the departments of neurosugery, general neurology and stroke. She is an assistant professor with the UCLA School of Nursing nurse practitioner program. Her research interest explores the impact of current or remote alcohol use on increased in-patient fall rates due to the behavioral characteristic of impulsivity.
Carol Pavlish, PhD, RN, FAAN is the associate professor and pre-licensure program director
with the UCLA School of Nursing and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Her clinical
background includes CCU, MICU, and oncology. Her research focuses on preventing gender-
based violence in post-conflict settings and preventing ethical conflicts and moral distress in
clinical practice.
Huibrie C. Pieters, PhD, DPhil, RN focuses her work on treatment-related decisions, informed
by her international and domestic experiences in nursing and clinical psychology. The unique contribution of her body of work is describing complex issues that pose a serious threat to both
survival and quality of life; improving healthcare by exploring ways to improve access and in-
crease adherence, both for disease prevention and active treatment.
Janet Rimicci, MSN, RN is currently the executive director of quality and patient safety for
UCLA Health. Areas of oversight include quality improvement, value, infection prevention, and safety. She was also previously the director of emergency and trauma services at the UCLA
Medical Center in Los Angeles which included oversight of the pre-hospital care base station,
emergency department, trauma services, and chief of staff of operations.

Bredny Rodriguez, MLS is an associate librarian at the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library
of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Bredny serves as the library's primary liai-son to the School of Dentistry and the Division of the Life Sciences. Bredny taught multiple
ANCC certified continuing education courses on literature database searching at the UCLA
Medical Center, Santa Monica.
Linda Sarna, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN is the interim dean for the UCLA School of Nursing. She
is internationally recognized for her scholarly activities promoting nursing involvement in to-bacco control and her oncology nursing research focused on quality of life and symptoms of
patients with lung cancer. She is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, books,
chapters and other publications, and has numerous honors and awards.
Loretta So, MSN, RN, CGRN a current PhD student at UCLA School of Nursing, has clinical
expertise in healthcare quality management, patient safety promotion and gastroenterology nursing practice. Her research interest focuses on organizational influences and nurses’ role
in reporting adverse events resulting from medical errors, and second victim phenomenon in
the context of moral distress impacts on healthcare providers.
Johnese Spisso, MPA, RN, assumed the position of president of UCLA Health, CEO of UCLA
Hospital System and associate vice chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences on February 8, 2016. She is a nationally recognized academic healthcare leader with 30 years of experience, and
oversees all operations of UCLA’s hospitals and clinics as well as the health system’s regional
outreach strategy.
Mary Woo, PhD, RN, FAAN focuses her research on investigations into autonomic-cardiac
interactions in relation to brain-heart interactions, particularly in advanced heart failure pa-tients. She is a member of the research mentorship team and initiated the “Practical Stat”
course for doctoral students in the UCLA School of Nursing.
Jennifer Zanotti, MSN, RN joined the ambulatory nursing team in October of 2015, and
serves as the first-ever ambulatory clinical nurse specialist (CNS) at UCLA Health. Jennifer has over 15 years of nursing experience, including serving as Magnet® program director for UCLA
Health. As ambulatory CNS, Jennifer provides leadership in clinical expertise, nursing practice,
and systems innovation to over 180 clinics and medical practices.
