SAE 100R7 - SupertwinRecommended For: A multi-purpose high pressure hose suitable for hydraulicsystems. Type 711 is compatible with hydraulic oils, grease, fuel oils, mineraloils and most phosphate esters. This hose is also suitable for many industrialgases, e.g. Heliox (max 25% O2), Argon, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide, Helium andAir. However such applications should avoid environments which could lead tocorrosion of hose wire. Refer to BS6596 for recommended factors of safety.Hoses for gas applications require a pin-pricked cover - please specify at time ofordering.Construction: Type 711 consists of two unplacticised polyester elastomer tubes,each reinforced with one braid of brass coated high tensile wire. The hoses arethen extruded together with a black polyurethane cover to form a �Siamese�cover. 1. ScopeHose (also includes hose assemblies) has a finite life and thereare a number of factors which will reduce it�s life.This SAE recommended practice is intended as a guide to assistsystem designers and/or users in the selection, installation andmaintenance of hose. The designers and users must make asystematic review of each application and then select, install andmaintain the hose to fulfill the requirements of theapplication. The following are general guidelines and are not nec-essarily a complete list.WARNING - IMPROPER SELECTION, INSTALLATION OR

MAINTENANCE MAY RESULT INPREMATURE FAILURES, BODILY INJURYOR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

2. References2.1 Applicable Documents

The following publications form a part of thisspecification to the extent specified herein. The latest issue ofSAE publications shall apply.

3. SelectionThe following is a list of factors which must beconsidered before final hose selection can be made:

3.1 PressureAfter determining the system pressure, hose selection must bemade so that the recommended maximum operating pressure isequal to or greater than the system pressure. Surge pressures higherthan the maximum operating pressure will shorten hose life andmust be taken into account by the hydraulicdesigner.

3.2 SuctionHoses used for suction applications must be selected toensure the hose will withstand the negative pressure of thesystem.

3.3 TemperatureCare must be taken to ensure that fluid and ambienttemperatures, both static and transient, do not exceed thelimitations of the hose. Special care must be taken when routingnear hot manifolds.

3.4 Fluid CompatibilityHose selection must assure compatibility of the hose tube, coverand fittings with the fluid used. Additional caution must beobserved in hose selection for gaseous applications.

3.5 SizeTransmission of power by means of pressurised fluid varies withpressure and rate of flow. The size of the components must beadequate to keep pressure losses to a minimum and avoiddamage to the hose due to heat generation orexcessive turbulence.

3.6 RoutingAttention must be given to optimum routing tominimise inherent problems.

3.7 EnvironmentCare must be taken to ensure that the hose and fittings are eithercompatible with or protected from the environment to which theyare exposed. Environmental conditions such as ultraviolet light,ozone, salt water, chemicals and air pollutants can causedegradation and premature failure and, therefore, must beconsidered.

3.8 Mechanical LoadsExternal forces can significantly reduce hose life.Mechanical loads which must be considered includeexcessive flexing, twist, kinking, tensile or side loads, bendradius and vibration. Use of swivel type fittings or adaptors maybe required to ensure no twist is put into the hose.Unusual applications may require special testing prior to hoseselection.

3.9 AbrasionWhile a hose is designed with a reasonable level ofabrasion resistance, care must be taken to protect the hose fromexcessive abrasion which can result in erosion,snagging and cutting of the hose cover. Exposure of thereinforcement will significantly accelerate hose failure.

3.10 Proper End FittingCare must be taken to ensure proper compatability existsbetween the hose and coupling selected based on themanufacturer�s recommendations substantiated by testing toindustry standards such as SAE J517. End fittingcomponents from one manufacturer are usually notcompatible with end fitting components supplied by another manu-facturer (i.e., using a hose fitting nipple from onemanufacturer with a hose socket from anothermanufacturer). It is the responsibility of the fabricator to consultthe manufacturer�s written instruction or themanufacturer directly for proper end fitting componentry.

3.11 LengthWhen establishing proper hose length, motion absorbtion, hoselength changes due to pressure, as well as hose and machine tol-erances must be considered.

3.12 Specifications and StandardsWhen selecting a hose, government, industry andmanufacturers� specifications and recommendationsmust be reviewed as applicable.

3.13 Hose CleanlinessHose components vary in cleanliness levels. Care must be takento ensure that the assemblies selected have an adequate level ofcleanliness for the application.

3.14 Electrical ConductivityCertain applications require that the hose be non-conductive to prevent electrical current flow. Otherapplications require the hose to be sufficientlyconductive to drain off static electricity. Hose andfittings must be chosen with these needs in mind.

4. InstallationAfter selection of proper hose, the following factors must beconsidered by the installer:

4.1 Pre-Installation InspectionPrior to installation, a careful examination of the hose must beperformed. All components must be checked for correct style,size and length. In addition, the hose must beexamined for cleanliness, I.D. obstructions, blisters, loose coveror any other visible defects.

4.2 Follow Manufacturers� Assembly InstructionsHose assemblies may be fabricated by the manufacturer, an agentfor or customer of the manufacturer or by the user. Fabrication ofpermanently attached fittings to hydraulic hose requiresspecialised assembly equipment. Field-attachable fittings (screwstyle and segment clamp style) can usually be assembledwithout specialised equipment although many manufacturersprovide equipment to assist in this operation. SAE J517 hose fromone manufacturer is usually not compatible with SAE J516 fit-tings supplied by another manufacturer. It is theresponsibility of the fabricator to consult the manufacturer�s writ-ten assembly instructions or the manufacturer directlybefore intermixing hose and fittings from two manufacturers.Similarly, assembly equipment from one manufacturer isusually not interchangeable with that of another manufacturer. Itis the responsibility of the fabricator to consult themanufacturer�s written instructions or the manufacturerdirectly for proper assembly equipment. Always follow themanufacturer�s instructions for proper preparation andfabrication of hose assemblies.

4.3 Minimum Bend RadiusInstallation at less than munimum bend radius maysignificantly reduce hose life. Particular attention must be givento preclude sharp bending at the hose/fitting juncture.

4.4 Twist Angle and OrientationHose installations must be such that relative motion of machinecomponents produces bending of the hose rather than twisting.

4.5 SecurementIn many applications, it may be necessary to restrain, protect orguide the hose to protect it from damage by unnecessary flexing,pressure surges and contact with other mechanical components.Care must be taken to ensure such restraints do not introduceadditional stress or wear points.

4.6 Proper Connection to PortsProper physical installation of the hose requirescorrectly installed port connection while ensuring that no twistor torque is put into the hose.

4.7 Avoid External DamageProper installation is not complete without ensuring that tensileloads, side loads, kinking, flattening, potential abrasion, threaddamage or damage to sealing surfaces are corrected oreliminated

4.8 System Check OutAfter completing the installation, all air entrapment must be elimi-nated and the system pressurised to the maximum system pres-sure and checked for proper function and freedom from leaks.Note: Avoid potential hazardous areas while testing.

5 MaintenanceEven with proper selection and installation, hose life may be sig-nificantly reduced without a continuing maintenanceprogramme. Frequency should be determined by the severity ofthe application and risk potential. A maintenance programmeshould include the following as a minimum:

5.1 Hose StorageHose products in storage can be affected adversely bytemperature, humidity, ozone, sunlight, oils, solvents,corrosive liquids and fumes, insects, rodents andradioactive materials. Storage areas should always berelatively cool and dark and free of dust, dirt, dampness and mil-dew.

5.2 Visual InspectionsAny of the following conditions requires replacement of the hose:a) Leaks at fitting or in hose. (leaking fluid is a fire hazard)b) Damaged, cut or abraded cover. (Any reinforcement

exposed.c) Kinked, crushed flattened or twisted hose.d) Hard, stiff, heat cracked or charred hose.e) Blistered, soft, degraded or loose cover.f) Cracked, damaged or badly corroded fittings.g) Fitting slippage on hose.

5.3 Visual InspectionsThe following items must be tightened, repaired or replaced asrequired:a) Leaking port conditions.b) Clamps, guards, shields.c) Remove excessive dirt buildup.d) System fluid level, fluid type and any air entrapment.

5.4 Functional TestOperate the system at maximum operating pressure and checkfor possible malfunction and freedom from leaks.Note: Avoid potential hazardous areas while testing.

5.5 Replacement IntervalsSpecific replacement intervals must be considered based onprevious service life, government or industry recommendationsor when failure could result in unacceptable down time, damageor injury risk.

Hose and Hose Assembly Service Life

Hydraulic hose (and hose assemblies) hasa limited life dependent on serviceconditions to which it is applied. Subject-ing hose (and hose assemblies) to condi-tions more severe than the recommendedlimits significantly reduces service life.Exposure to combinations of recom-mended limits (i.e., continuous use atmaximum rated working pressure, maxi-mum recommended operating temperatureand minimum bend radius) will alsoreduce service life. Failure to followproper selection, installation and mainte-nance procedures may result in injury topersonnel and/or damage to equipment.Hose assemblies in service should beregularly inspected for leaks, abrasion,kinks, cover blisters or other such dam-ages. Assemblies showing signs of wear ordamage should be replaced immediately.Maximum service life can be obtained bycomplying with the following recommen-dations:

Working pressure- The hydraulic systempressure should not exceed the ratedworking pressure of the hose. Pressuresurges or peaks exceeding the ratedworking pressure are destructive and mustbe taken into account when selecting ahose.

Minimum Burst Pressure- Burst pres-sures are reference pressures intended fordestructive testing purposes and designsafety factors only.

Temperature Range*- Do not exposehose to internal or external temperaturesexceeding the recommended limits.Consult additional technical data whenhydraulic fluids contain emulsions orsolutions. The fluid manufacturer�srecommended maximum operatingtemperature for any given fluid must notbe exceeded, regardless of hose tempera-ture range.*Actual service life at temperaturesapproaching the recommended limit willdepend on the particular application andthe fluid being used in the hose. Intermit-tent (up to 10% of operating time) refersto momentary temperature surges.Detrimental effects increase withincreased exposure to elevated tempera-tures.

Fluid Compatibility- The hydraulicassembly (tube, cover, reinforcement andcouplings) must be fluid compatible. Thecorrect hose must be used because phos-phate ester and petroleum base hydraulicfluids have drastically different chemicalcharateristics. Many hoses are compatiblewith one or the other but not all fluids.

Minimum Bend Radius- Do not bend orflex hose to a radius smaller than theminimum recommended and do notsubject hose to tension or torque. This canplace excessive stress on the reinforce-ment and severely reduce the ability of thehose to withstand pressure.

Hose Size- The hose size (inside diameter)must be capable of handling the requiredflow volume. Too small an I.D. for a givenvolume of flow results in excessive fluidturbulence, pressure drop, heat generationand tube damage.

Hose Routing- Restrain, protect or guidehose (clamps can be used) to minimizerisk of damage due to excessive flexing,whipping or contacting other moving partsor corrosives. Determine hose lengths andconfigurations that will result in properrouting and protection from abrasion,snagging or kinking and provide leak-resistant connections.

Hose Length- Correct hose lengthdeterminations include considerations forlength changes under pressure, machinevibration and motion, and hose assemblyrouting.

Hose Applications- Select the proper hosefor the application. Vacuum service andspecial fluid or high temperature capabili-ties are among the applications requiringparticular consideration and a specifichose. Do not use hydraulic hose in placeof permanent piping

Hose Shelf LifeStorage environment, along with rubbermaterials can vary the shelf life limit.Some hose materials last longer in storagedue to inherent resistance characteristics.Other materials require additives duringcompounding. These additives are eventu-ally consumed, even in seemingly idealstorage conditions

Shelf life is difficult to quantify as manyvariables affect the hose. Proper storageprecautions can result in three to fiveyears shelf life. Beyond this time there canbe significant service life decrease,depending on storage environmentvariables. Some of these variables aretemperature, humidity, ozone, oil, sol-vents, corrosive materials, fumes, insects,rodents, radioactivity, space allowanceand bends.

Hose should be stored in a cool dry areanever exceeding +38º (+100ºF). If storedbelow freezing, pre-warming may berequired prior to handling, testing andplacing into service. Store hose in originalcontainer. Never stack hose too high, asit�s weight can crush hose at the bottom ofthe stack. Direct sunlight, rain, heaters orbeing near electrical equipment willreduce hose life.

It is recommended that hose in extendedstorage be visually inspected and testedprior to use. Hose judged marginal shouldbe replaced to avoid potential failure,property damage or bodily injury. Storehose on a first in-first out basis. Unusuallylong storage or poor storage environmentcan deteriorate hose, reduce performanceand may lead to premature failure.

SELECTING THE PROPER HOSE

1....... Hose Size (Dash Numbers)The inside diameter of the hose must be adequate to keep pressure loss to a minimum and avoid damage tothe hose due to heat generation or excess turbulence. See hose sizing nomograph on pageTo determine the replacement hose size, read the layline printing on the side of the original hose. If theoriginal hose layline is painted over or worn off, the original hose must be cut and inside diameter measuredfor size. NOTE: Before cutting an original hose assembly, measure the overall assembly length. This meas-urement will be required to build the replacement assembly.The hydraulics industry has adopted a measuring system called Dash Numbers to indicate hose and couplingsize. The number which preceeds the hose or coupling description is the dash size (see following table). Thisindustry standard number denotes hose I.D. in sixteenths of an inch. (The exception to this is the SAE100R5and R14 hoses where dash sizes denote hose I.D. equal to equivalent tube O.D.)

2....... TemperatureWhen selecting a replacement assembly, two areas of temperature must be considered. These are fluidtemperature and ambient temperature. The hose selected must be capable of withstanding the minimum andmaximum temperatures seen by the system. Care must be taken when routing near hot manifolds and inextreme cases a heat shield may be advisable.

Hose selectionmust assure compatibility of the hose tube, cover, couplings and �O� rings with the fluid used. Additionalcaution must be exercised in hose selection for gaseous applications such as refrigerants and LPG.

5.......PressureMost important in the hose selection process is knowing system pressure, including pressure spikes. Pub-lished working pressures must be equal to or greater than the system pressure. Pressure spikes greater thanthe published working pressure will shorten hose life and must be taken into consideration.

COUPLING IDENTIFICATION

There are five coupling systems generally used for hydraulic connections. They are identified geographicallyor by country as:

British, French, German, Japanese, North American.If you can identify the country of origin of the equipment you are working with, it is easy to identify thecoupling style. Simply find the appropriate country in the following pages and locate the particular couplingin the table that follows.

BRITISH

British Standard Pipe ParallelPopular couplings have British Standard Pipe (BSP)threads, also known as Whitworth threads. These canbe parallel (BSPP) or tapered (BSPT), with a 30ºinverted flare. Flanges are equivalent to SAE Code61 or SAE Code 62 (except -10 which is a non-SAEsize flange). Port connections are usually made withBSPP threads and a soft metal cutting ring for seal-ing.The BSPP (parallel) male will mate with a BSPP(parallel) female or a female port.The BSPP male has straight threads and a 30º seat.The BSPP female has straight threads and a 30º seat.The female port has straight threads and a spotface.The seal on the port is made with an O-ring or softmetal washer on the male.The BSPP (parallel) connector is similar to, but notinterchangeable with, the NPSM connector. Thethread pitch is different in most sizes, and the threadangle is 55º instead of the 60º angle found on NPSMthreads.

Popular couplings are French GAZ. These have a 24º seat and metric threads. These are similar to GermanDIN couplings, but the threads are different in some sizes. Although both are metric threads, the French usefine threads in all sizes and German DIN couplings use coarse threads in larger sizes. Most port connectionsare flange connections. French flanges are different from SAE and hellip; they have a lip that protrudes fromthe flange face. These are called Poclain style flanges.

JIS - BSP

There are two popular coupling styles in Japan:1. All Komatsu equipment uses couplings with a 30º seat and metric fine threads. All flanges are Code 61 orCode 62 (except -10).2. Most other Japanese equipment uses couplings with a 30º seat and British Standard Pipe Parallel threads,usually called JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) couplings. They are not interchangeable with British cou-plings, since the flare is not inverted. All flanges are Code 61 or Code 62 (except -10).

Japanese 30º Flare Parallel ThreadsThe Japanese 30º flare male connector will mate witha Japanese 30º flare female only.The male and female have straight threads and a 30ºseat. The seal is made on the 30º seat.The threads on the Japanese 30º flare connectorconform to JIS B 0202, which are the same as theBSPP threads. Both the British and Japanese connec-tors have a 30º seat, but they are not interchangeable,because the British seat is inverted.

Provide slack or bend in the hose line to provide for changes in length that may occur when pressure isapplied

InstallationHydraulic hose may change in length from +2% to -4% when pressurised. Allowance should be made toprovide sufficient slack to compensate for any changes in length. Keep the bend radius to the largest possi-ble diameter, this will prevent collapse of line or flow restriction. When installing hydraulic hose, use the layline as a guide to prevent twisting. Eliminate contact between moving parts and hose. If the applicationcannot avoid contact, a spring guard should be used. It is recommended that a fire sleeve should be appliedon the outside cover when hydraulic hose lines are used near the exhaust manifold or any other source ofheat.

Observe linear stripe. The hose must not be twisted. High pressure applied to a twisted hose may causefailure or loosen the nut.

COLLAPSE PROCEDUREMF2000� - GO, NO-GO MANDRELS

1. � Select the corresponding mandrel for the size, type of hose (wire spiral or wire braid) to be swaged.2. � Swage to the dimensions stated, following the standard swage procedure.3. � Insert the no-go end of the mandrel into an insert tail. The mandrel should stop halfway down the

tail. This indicates the minimum collapse has been reached (Figure 1).Remark: If the assembly is fitted with 90º/45º elbows at both ends then a sample should be swaged, cutoff below the ferrule and the collapse inspected from the bottom of the insert tail.

4. �Insert the go end of the mandrel into the insert tail. The mandrel should pass through the tail(Figure 2).

5. � Continue to swage the assembly or batch of assemblies using the current swage setting, and controlthe bore collapse by suitable statistical frequency.

6. � The insert collapse should be re-checked should the current batch of hoses, inserts or ferrules bechanged.

* UNC.The SAE Code 61 and Code 62 4-Bolt Split Flange is used worldwide, usually as a connection on pumps and motors. There arefour exceptions:1. The -10 size (5/8 Komatsu), which is common outside of North America, is not a standard SAE size.2. Caterpillar flanges, which are the same flange OD as SAE Code 62, have a thicker flange head (�C� dimension in table).3. Poclain flanges, which are completely different from SAE flanges. (See page 28 of Gates Hydraulic Coupling InternationalThread Identification Guide).4. The Komatsu style flange fitting is nearly identical to and fully interchangeable with the SAE Code 61 flange fitting. In all sizesthe O-ring dimensions are different.
