Conference theme Dynamics of Make in India The Organising Committee unanimously felt that it is an appropriate time for stakeholders from the entire cotton value chain to discuss, deliberate and understand the complexities of ever changing global, regional and local trade scenario to evolve new strategies and synergize efforts for creating a win-win situation for all in becoming global leaders. Over 45 Million people are directly employed by the garment and textile industry in India alone. This sector is one of the largest sources of employment generation in our country, contributing 14% of industrial production, and 13% to the country′s export earnings. The retail sector has experienced rapid growth in the past decade due to rise in disposable incomes and consumerism, enticing 22 well known foreign investors to set up their manufacturing base in India. With four key agencies identified under the ministry of Textiles and 14 export promotion councils ready to offer assistance in "Dynamics of Make in India", the conference was designed to create an ideal platform for sharing intellectual capital for the growth of the cotton value chain.
Special Focus Cross Border Trade Opportunities Since India, Pakistan and Bangladesh produce around 29% and consume around 28.5 % of global cotton; collectively these countries maintain a NATURAL REGIONAL BALANCE. It was felt that dialogues and deliberations with stake holders from the value chain of these countries would help others in planning their marketing strategies for developing fresh business relations in this region. Moreover, since cotton, cotton yarn and fabric form a sizable portion of cross border trade between these countries; ICC 2015 would be an ideal platform to personally meet business associates in this region.

Excerpts from the Inaugural Session In his Welcome Address, Mr. Mahesh Sharda, President ICAL, welcomed the dignitaries and all delegates and appraised the august gathering about Project “Sankalp” and “Help The Cotton Farmer” initiated by ICAL.
Project Sankalp On 6th May 2015 ICAL and Bollgard Team collaborated to initiate project Sankalp; a village adoption program to provide technical knows how on best management practices to enhance the cotton productivity. Cotton is major cash crop cultivated on around
127 lakh hectares by more than 60 lakh farmers in India. Our national cotton yield is about 560 kgs lint per hec which is less than global average of 760 kgs, so we have ample scope to work on productivity enhancement efforts. Bollgard technology has helped India to become world’s second largest producer of cotton which is a result of conjoined efforts among farmer’s community, State Agricultural Universities, department of agriculture, different farmers friendly organizations like ICAL and others who engaged in R&D of better technology, seed and agronomy. Both, ICAL & Bollgard Team is committed to support development of cotton crop and its growers across nation. The key words said by Mr. Mahesh Sharda, President, ICAL are “change a village to change the nation”. ICAL is a 52 year old organization and has decided to increase its role in farm factory cooperation and help farmers to get the best knowledge available and provide a platform to organizations attached with cotton value chain to full fill their CSR do their bit for farmers. The Bollgard Team is working sincerely in field to handhold cotton growers since last one decade with introduction of Bollgard Technology. He said that we are committed help farmers with our technical expertise through collaborative efforts where both partners will help cotton grower from sowing till harvesting to guide them on best management practices in cotton cultivation to enhance their productivity during upcoming Kharif 2015 sowing season through series of on field activities.
Project Coverage Project proposed to includes 2 states (Punjab & Haryana), 2 Districts (Bathinda & Sirsa) , 6 villages (3 each in Bathinda & Sirsa), targeting 300 farmers with minimum 300 acres).
Farmers Training camp on cotton crop agronomy by Project Sankalp Team To create awareness among cotton farmers on right agronomic practices, Project Sankalp team conduct village farmer training camp in each adopted villages Nirban, Jodhpuria & Rajpura – Rattakhera, Gehri Bhagi, Shergarh, Gurusar sahne-wala every fortnightly. HELP THE COTTON FARMERS During the 53rd AGM of ICAL, “HELP THE COTTON FARMER” was adopted. The livelihood of cotton farmers across Northern State of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan has been severely affected by the whitefly invasion which has ravaged their cotton crop. High Temperatures and scanty rainfall during this season were perfect conditions for whitefly breeding which further aggravated the challenges faced by the cotton farmer. A survey by members of ICAL assesses the severity of the damage from 30% to 100% in the standing crops. Even in lesser affected regions, the growth of the
cotton plant is stunted with much lesser ball formation. The severity of the destruction is so extreme that many farmers have re ploughed their fields.
ICAL in a symbolic gesture is helping the marginalized farmers with landholdings upto 3 acre through an initiative “HELP THE COTTON FARMER”. The Association has appealed to all Cotton Traders, Ginners, Textiles, Exporters and its members to come forward and help the Cotton Farmer who are the roots and backbone of the value chain. Taking the lead, Sh. Ashwani Jhamb, Rakesh Rathi, K M Chaturvedi, and Pawan Nagori Directors of ICAL along with Sh. Pankaj Sharda of the Dind Dayal Purushottam Lal Sirsa visited around 120 effected farmers and handed over individual cheques @ Rs-4000 per acre. The Association has so far disbursed Rs 15 Lacs in the Northern Cotton growing Region which should serve as a motivation for other segments of the value chain to come forward at his hour of need and “HELP THE COTTON FARMER”.
