In March 2015, one of our Technical Applications Specialist, Neil Ragoonanan, was selected to visit China to attend the 16th China International Petroleum & Petro-chemical Technology and Equipment Exhibition (CIPPE) and visit the Puyang Zhongshi Group (PYZS).

The Exhibition, which was held in Beijing, was targeted as a medium for us to locate manufacturers for specialized API certified production equipment. The Exhibition confidently published that this would be the largest Oil & Gas show in the world with exhibitors from sixty five (65) different countries. Hence, we were able to generate some leads from attending this show.

The Puyang Zhongshi Group (PYZS) is one of the largest inde-pendent manufacturers of API certi-fied Oilfield Production Equipment & Tools in China. TOSL commenced trade with PYZS about three (3) years ago for the supply of Pump Jacks, Sucker Rods and Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG). At PYZS Neil was able to meet with Mr. Jin-cheng Zhang, the Group Vice-President, and Mr. Alex Sun, the Sales Manager who facilitated visits to the respective factories and en-gaged in further discussions on the TOSL / PYZS relationship. Arising out of this trip, TOSL was able to secure a further purchase order for Sucker Rods. This market and its products were previously dominated for more than ten (10) years by another Latin American Company. Our thrust now is to market the products to other companies in the Energy Sector. For further information, we encourage you to contact our offices.

Almost 200 nations will gather in Paris in December to try and come to terms on a new worldwide agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in average global temperatures to two degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels. The World Bank Group and others are encouraging countries, sub-national jurisdictions, and companies to join a growing coalition of first movers supporting carbon pricing. Given the size and urgency of the climate challenge, a full range of carbon pricing policies and instruments will be required to bring down emissions and address climate change.

Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (iNDCs) were conceived in 2013 at the Conference and Parties 19 (COP19) by Kishan Kumarsingh (Top climate delegate from Trinidad and Tobago) and his colleagues in Warsaw as a way of lessening the largely top-down approach to change mitigation under the Kyoto Protocol and rebalancing it with more of a bottom-up approach that aligns national circumstances and capabilities with the collective objective of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Kishan, TOSL and The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago have been working with the Petrotrin Strategy and Business Development Division to re-purpose a more comprehensive and iNDC compliant Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project for the benefit of Trinidad and Tobago. A Petrotrin modified and more flexible CDM climate mitigation framework will be part and parcel of the national iNDC uploaded to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in July 2015.

The UNFCCC is supportive of this approach and the redesign of the Petrotrin CDM Project because countries are antic-ipated to adopt a new, universal climate change agreement in Paris on a best effort basis. Success in Paris will rest on four pillars: • A universal climate agreement that puts us on a path to climate neutrality as soon as possible.

• International contributions to the objective of the Convention. • Scaled-up cooperative action, with participation from nations and a broad range of stakeholders, and • Scaled-up finance in support of action by developing countries.

Consideration of the role of carbon markets is relevant to all four of the pillars seen above and funds needed to achieve economic transformation and deep decarbonisation of the global economy must come from both private and public sources: (Con’t on Pg. 6)

In this Horizon issue, we will be having a one-on-one discussion with another of our long service employees, Janelle Karamath, Divisional Co-ordinator / Sales Support.

1.) How many years have you worked at TOSL? 15 years

2.) Based on your experience with us, what do you think it takes to succeed at this company? It takes performance, dedication and loyalty to succeed at TOSL. Also, a great sense of humour would be as asset.

3.) What suggestions for improvements do you have to make our workplace better? Logistics is a problem, we have many buildings, but one company. This should always be considered when imple-menting procedures/authorizations.

4.) What is most satisfying/ enjoyable about your job and working with TOSL? It is truly a pleasure to work with my direct colleagues. The synergy in my group truly makes the work load seem lighter. It’s a real pleasure working with this bunch! Not to mention the Nescafe Gold Coffee and Creamer my boss ensures we have every morning, in addition to the other goodies that he’s always showers upon us.

5.) What has been your most memorable experience thus far with TOSL? The ole mas competition of 2012.

6.) What in your mind is the most significant change at TOSL when you compare the present to the days when you had just started?

There is a vast difference in the number of people employed at TOSL today than 15 years ago. When I started here I knew everyone, now I have to ask “who is that, do they work here?” This shows growth in the last 15 years.

7.) How well do you think your training and development needs were assessed and met? Training was provided specifically as per the company’s/job requirement. All other training and development was my per-sonal pursuit.

8.) If you were retiring tomorrow, what one thing you would like to be remembered for and feel most proud of accom- plishing for TOSL?

When I started with the group I am in presently, there was no administrative support, no administrative systems and struc-tures in place simply because the group was a recent addition to TOSL. Basically, I had to design a system that suits them starting from ground zero. Today, we have a system that is comprehensive, auditable and very efficient, contributing to the continued success of the group.

9.) What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of TOSL? WORLD CLASS

10.) Why have you chosen to stay with TOSL and not move to other jobs, as most people do these days? I think we have one of the best leaders here at TOSL. Our CEO in my view is second to none.

A . ) HSSE Upda teA . ) HSSE Upda teA . ) HSSE Upda teA . ) HSSE Upda te As the HSSE Department embarked upon the 2nd quarter of 2015, some very important and significant milestones were achieved. On April 22 2014, over a billion people in 190 countries took action for Earth Day. Hence, the theme for this year was ‘It’s our turn to lead’ and TOSL took the initiative to participate in this global event by showing a documentary in our conference room. Those attended provided great feedback on this initiative. On Friday June 05, TOSL celebrated World Environment Day (WED). This year’s theme was"Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” In order to bring awareness to the organization, educational articles were taken from WED’s official website and shared with staff prior to and on the day. The following is an excerpt of part of the message that was sent to staff:

“Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care. The well-being of humanity, the environment, and the func-tioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Living

within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. " Last year, the HSE department entered the British Safety Council’s International Safety Awards 2015 competition. The 2015 International Safety Awards were open to any organization and related to the health and safety management at a specific site or business unit. TOSL answered 12 questions about our health and safety management and submitted the answers online. The International Safety Awards are: • Independently marked by experienced health and safety practitioners • An invaluable award endorsing your health and safety management • Independently marked by experienced health and safety practitioners • An invaluable award endorsing your health and safety management TOSL won the award in the category “Merit” which is a phe-nomenal achievement given more than 300 companies partici-pated globally. This award will be displayed in our Building 1 lobby. The Department, thus far, has continued to support and lend HSE technical guidance and advice to the organization in many of the existing and new projects being brought to TOSL. Additionally, ensuring that client HSE regulations are met, we continue to be at the forefront of good planning from the incep-tion of each project. As part of continuous improvement, as mandated by our HSSE management system, the department continues to roll out pro-ject forms and documents that will assist in capturing critical information which will ultimately aid in understanding the pro-ject’s successes and failures, whilst ensuring it is done better the next time while identifying and closing out gaps. In terms of training, fourteen (14) new persons from every division were trained in First Aid and CPR conducted by Training and Logistics. Over forty (40) personnel to date have been trained in defensive driving while members of our HSE team have been trained in Measurement of Hazardous Substances from the Occupational Hygiene Training Asso-ciation in the UK, TBOSIET, BP golden Rules and EMS. In the near future, additional Fire Warden, Defensive Driving, First Aid & CPR and Incident Commander training are carded for other employees. As we continue to maintain our systems, we shall have STOW recertification closer to year-end. Hence, we will be working closely with all departments in the upcoming months. (Con’t on Pg. 5)

Tactical approaches to quality tend to focus on delivering products and services according to specifications. Organizations can often increase the payoff of their efforts when they look beyond meeting specifications and seek to under-stand and improve the total customer experience. Enhancing the customer experience means working toward several additional goals beyond basic delivery of products and services:

• Delivering the right product or service for the customer’s need. • Selling the product or service honestly.

• Ensuring ease of use and preventing failures. • Making it easy for customers to do business with the organization. • Creating an emotional connection and providing added value when appropriate.

What are the keys to providing a great customer experience? Understanding the full range of causes of customer dissatisfaction is an important first step in enhancing the customer experi-ence. The most common causes of dissatisfaction include:

• Organizations: Through poorly designed products that fail to meet expectations, sales and marketing messages that do not accurately communicate what customers can expect, and broken manufacturing and delivery process-es that result in reduced usability and performance.

• Employees: Through failure to follow established processes, projecting a negative or unhelpful attitude, lack of empowerment and flexibility to address issues, and lack of proper training.

• Customers: Themselves, through incorrect expectations, failure to read instructions, and user errors.

Organizations also need to establish an effective voice of the customer (VOC) process. As the figure below illustrates, cus-tomer surveys, customer contact data, internal operations process and quality data, and employee input are all sources of VOC information that can be used to quantify the cost of inaction on customer experience issues.

Additionally, customer experience requires dedicating the right resources, in terms of both technology and people, and de-ploying them strategically. Technologies that can enhance customer experience efforts include:

• A customer relationship management (CRM) solution can be used proactively if it is linked to operational data showing transactions, status, and failures.

• An easy to navigate website should be any organization’s first line of defense. • Speech/text analytics can help with intervention and diagnosis of issues. • Email/chat/texting ideally should be driven by CRM. • Wireless often enables product or experience monitoring. • Mobile can serve as a faster channel, especially with voice recognition, while offering the same customer experi-

ence. • Online communities and social media can be used to educate customers and provide some support as well as in-

vite feedback, but should not be misunderstood to be primary service channels. • Gamification can motivate ideas and support. • Video/Vine is often the best method of education.

When considering the roles involved in supporting a positive customer experience, organizations may find that transforming more traditional quality improvement departments into customer quality groups can help mobilize staff. Some organizations are also creating roles such as the chief customer officer to provide customer experience management leadership.

Our New Market Mechanism Our New Market Mechanism Our New Market Mechanism Our New Market Mechanism ( Con ’ t f r om Pg . 2 )( Con ’ t f r om Pg . 2 )( Con ’ t f r om Pg . 2 )( Con ’ t f r om Pg . 2 )

The TOSL Solution: A Caribbean Carbon Market (CCM) to facilitate investment in renewable energy product- ion; manufacturing; the built environment; carbon, capture and sequester (CCS); and the extractive industries. Carbon markets will be a significant part of the Paris agreement that will create international demand and common pricing (exchange rates) for units generated by regional Greenhouse Gas (GHG) trading systems.

Market size: Point Carbon predicts that by 2017, 11.5Gt of carbon will be traded in the world's carbon markets. Emitters will contract directly with the CCM and work with it from project planning stages to credit delivery. There will be a further boost in growth with a successful deal in Paris.

Market growth opportunity: Emission trading and rising carbon prices will drive the low emission and renewable energy infrastructure development market to US$1tn annually by 2021. Point Carbon expects the CO2 per tonne carbon price to average ≈US$15 from 2015 to 2020. It projects an increase to US$27 per tonne from 2021 to 2030. In the first 3 years of operation, the CCM target is for 4% of the annual US$80bn market or US$3.2bn. Private sector investment in the region is calculated at 12.5% or US$133mn per year which will require ~US$1bn per year in concessional finance, private sector investment and carrying costs.

Metrics: The CCM will drive private placements of US$133mn annually to full fund a credit system that scales to US$3.2bn in 3 years. Natural gas is a perfect transitional fuel, is cost-effective and has a carbon output of 30% less than diesel. A post registration change of the Trinidad CDM gas recovery and utilization project will add carbon market framework and new fugitive emission approved UN methodologies. Local oil sector emitters will fund soft cost and working capital require-ments of the credit system. Transaction fees generated by offset purchases will generate credit system revenues by year 3 for scale and CCM clean energy investment.

Other metrics: The CCM design features are crafted to participate in a global non UNFCCC carbon market. So an agree-ment in Paris is not a showstopper for CCM, but would create additional demand if ratified. Participation in CCM is also voluntary for installations in Trinidad and Tobago. CCM will employ new and innovative risk mitigation instruments to pro-tect developers, investors and lenders. CCM life-cycle carbon equity will contribute ~20% to each project’s operating and developer debt service costs. CCS creates a way to trade and monetize emission reductions. In other words, TOSL has created something of value, together with a market for Trinidad and Tobago to recognize and trade related units of value.

Other benefits of the CCM: Caribbean region job creation, technology transfer, sustainable climate finance, local busi-ness opportunity, foreign investment and energy security are just some of the collateral benefits derived from a CCM. Of the projected US$3.2bn, 40% or US$1.3bn will circulate more than once in local economies because of this intervention. A CCM also serves as a buffer for oil sector divestment and the stranded reserves challenge in part, due to our natural gas to clean energy systems transitional business plan.

Petrotrin, UNFCCC, Ministry of Environment & Water Resources (MEWR) and TOSL have all agreed on these principles: • Markets must meet standards that deliver real, permanent, additional and verified mitigation.

• Markets must avoid double counting of effort. • Markets must achieve a net decrease and/or avoidance of emissions. • All countries, individually or jointly, may develop and implement markets. • Use of markets facilitates increase mitigation ambition, particularly by developed countries; and • Operation of markets should bear in mind different circumstances of developed and developing countries.

The TOSL Challenge: Ten million people in the Caribbean are without access to electricity due to a lack of financial re-sources for needed advancements. The other Caribbean States transportation and power sectors rely on dirty and expen-sive fuels.

The TOSL Business Plan: The European Commission (EC), UNFCCC and Petrotrin will retrofit the Trinidad registered CDM programmatic project into a New Market Mechanism and an iNDC candidate through the addition of emission market features, such as international transaction logs, an emitter database, GHG inventory and a registry. The CCM will target renewable systems, energy efficiency and low emission development that would not occur organically.

The TOSL Investment Metrics: Over 75% of all emissions are derived from fossil fuels. A CCM furthers the region’s tran-sition from fossil fuel. The oil sector will lead the global climate debate and to meet its compliance obligations, it will be-come a source of investment for a CCM and an advocate of credit system linkage to cap-and-trade systems. Oil and gas high intensity emitter shareholder wealth is close to 10 trillion US$ and is a reliable source of first in/last out investment. The CCM will determine the cost of pollution and catalyse green technologies in the Caribbean.

Only markets and market mechanisms can deliver the private sector engagement on the scale and scope needed to tackle climate change and achieve climate neutrality. TOSL’s ideas and entrepreneurial drive working in alignment with an ambi-tious United States Caribbean energy security policy assures the success of the Caribbean Carbon Market.

This quarter we feature a new section which showcases the creative writing talent of our young TOSL campers (i.e. children of our Staff). In this edition, David Bickram, son of our IT Manager, and a student of Grant Memorial Presbyteri-an School Standard 5, shares with us his visit to the La Vega Estate.

“Ring! Ring! My alarm clock sounded as I slowly opened my eyes. It was very early to be waking up on a Saturday morning, but we had to leave in order to have more time to enjoy ourselves. That was the day when six families of my friends were going with us to have an amazing day at the La Vega Estate in Gran Couva.

While on the way, we stopped at a doubles cart at the side of the road in Couva to have a bite for breakfast. They had one of the best doubles in Trinidad and Tobago. About half-an-hour later, after some winding roads and scenic hillsides, we arrived at La Vega. The parking lot was huge and, as we were early, there weren’t much cars around. We parked close to the main office. While waiting to splash, we looked at a variety of the most breath-taking flowers and plants that were on sale. There were rows of plants with flowers, fruits, vegetation, leaves and thorns.

There was also a small, neat wooden bridge with a water fountain in an oriental garden setting where we took family pictures as memorabilia.

Around 10 AM, the pool ‘finally’ opened and my dad carried our bags from the car to our large shed with four picnic tables and a barbecue pit. When all of my friends arrived we went into two blue sparkling pools for fun in the sun. We swam, splashed and played games in the pool until lunch time came around. Some parents were lounging by the pool or cooking in the shed. We were called to lunch, which was a buf-fet consisting of fried rice, noodles, fresh salad, provisions, soft

potato salad, hot macaroni pie, barbeque chicken, pizza, channa and aloo, pumpkin and my favourite: roti and curry duck. We had a plateful of food, with second servings, along with soda and juice while all the parents were drinking stuff that we kids were not allowed to touch. For dessert we had chocolate covered and iced donuts, and a delicious homemade sponge cake.

After a long lunch, we all went for a walk around the scenic grounds to discover all the flora and fauna. It was very interesting with all the bright colours and the paths by the river. Later in the afternoon, my dad and I decided to go fishing. I was so excited because it was my first time fishing. We rented a fishing pole and bought some bait before we headed to the lake. It didn’t take long to start fishing once we reached there, but we struggled in catching a fish. After an hour of fishing, we were about to give up when I miraculously managed to hook a seven-incher. After taking a few pictures we decided to throw it back into the water. When we were about to leave the lake, my dad and I saw a crowd of people admiring something in the water. We approached the crowd to see what they were looking at. I hardly caught a glimpse of a caiman!

Now totally satisfied, with pride I ventured back with my dad to the shed where everyone had already packed up their things and were ready to leave. It was already evening time so I bid farewell to all my friends as they left. Before my family left, we bought a pepper plant and a jasmine plant for my mom to take home. I loved my day at La Vega and I would definitely go back there when I have the opportunity. I will always remember this wonderful experience.”

Thanks David for this insightful and descriptive adventure and congratu-lations on your SEA success. It encourages others to want to visit es-pecially from your breathtaking photos. For further information, visit their website at www.lavegaestate.com .
