THE ARTISTIC HIGH RENAISSANCE

Many artists during this period had mastered new techniques

and moved onto a more individual forms of creative expression.

High Renaissance: 1480-1520• The change into the High Renaissance can be distinguished by

the increased importance of Rome as a new cultural center of the Italian Renaissance .

Three Major Artist of this time:• Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519): continued with realism of the

human body, extended this to the idealization of nature.• Raphael (1483-1520): attempt to achieve ideal beauty • Michelangelo (1475-1564): effected by Nepolitanism, search for

ideal beauty-David

ART AND SOCIAL STATUS

Most artists were still viewed as artisans and sold art at

guilds

Especially talented /famous artists (e.g. Leonardo da Vinci)

became recognized as artistic geniuses

Artists were eventually acknowledged for their creativity

and advancing thinking over skill

Soon artists were able to mingle with upper class society –

enriching knowledge in a way that as apparent in the artwork

THE NORTHERN ARTISTIC RENAISSANCE

The North (especially Lower countries) and Italy took different approaches to art.

Italy: importance was placed on the accuracy of the human figure and mastering

skills to help portray humans in a realistic setting.• Large walls in churches: the rise of fresco painting

North: with their churches filled with large glass windows emphasis was put on

illuminating manuscripts and smaller wooden panel paintings for the front of alters.• Became the masters at rendering details

Northern School of Art: one of the first to use oil paint: allows a range of

colours and fine details • Van Eyck shows the style of northern artwork at this time.• By the end of the 15th centaury art of the North was beginning to be influenced by Italy

RENAISSANCE MUSIC

Guillaume Dufay (1400-1474)

Madrigals became 12 line poems set to music

Originated in 14th century courtrooms

Revolved around romantic relationships

“Text painting” – music sounds the same way a the

lyrics
