Free The Children is the world’s largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million youth involved in our innovative education and development programs in 45 countries.

Founded in 1995 by international children’s rights activist Craig Kielburger, they are a charity and educational partner that believe in a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. Our domestic programs educate, engage and empower hundreds of thousands of youth in North America, the UK and around the world. International Projects have brought over 650 schools and school rooms to youth and provided clean water, health care and

sanitation to one million people around the world. Grade 7 leadership student’s attended the ME to WE event held at Roger’s Arena on Wednesday, October 22, and came back inspired to create social change. Led by Ms. Reuter and Mrs. Nakatsu. WE team members will meet on Wednesday morning to plan events. Stay tuned to see how they will change the world!

HALLOWEEN FUN

The last week of October was incredibly busy as clas-ses prepared for Halloween! Our senior students held their first dance of the year in the gymnasium yesterday and it was great fun for the 6/7 students! Thank you to all who donated treats or donations for the event!! Many of our primary classes chose to have parties in

the afternoon to celebrate the spooky holiday. Fun was had by all during the primary costume parade this morning. Thank you to our leadership club who supplied prizes for the best costumes of the day!

REMEMBRANCE DAY

On Tuesday, November 10, our school will be having a Remembrance Day assem-bly. Mrs. Fierro, our music teacher, will be leading the children in a variety of songs during the assembly. Pop-pies will be distributed before

the assembly and donations are being kindly accepted at the gymnasium door. Parents, family and commu-nity members are invited to join us for our assembly. We hope to begin our assembly promptly at 10:30 a.m.

All students at SS/BCSD will be involved in the assembly. Students are asked to wear white tops (t-shirts, blouses, dress shirts, sweaters) and dark bottoms for this special assembly.

The weather was perfect last Tuesday as a temporary pump-kin patch appeared on the filed at South Slope/BCSD! Volun-teers were at the school at the crack of dawn to prepare for our special event. Thank you so

much to our friends at CUPE local 23 for generously sponsor-

ing the event. Over 300 pump-kins, hot chocolate and popcorn was available for all our students and the children who attend the Deaf preschool We also have the Revitt family to thank for applying for the funds and organizing the fun!

PUMPKIN PATCH

VOLLEYBALL at SOUTHSLOPE/BCSD

South Slope/BCSD has two volleyball teams that have been practicing with coaches Mrs. Sian, Mr. Brown, Mr.

Hunter and Ms. Richardson. Each team practices two times per week learning basic skills such as volleying, bumping, serviing and blocking. The boys team practices Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:00 am and the girls practice on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00 am.

Games schedules are in the office if you have not already received one. Their season continues as they challenge other teams from the local ar-ea. The season will end with a playday at a Burnaby high school. Go South slope/BCSD.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED—Jingle Bell/Light Walk

Our 5th annual walk will take place

in December. On Wednesday,

Dec. 2nd we will deliver flyers to

homes. On Friday, December 4th,

we will collect food from the

homes we delivered flyers to.

Please watch for the volunteer form

as it will be going out sometime in

the next 2 weeks.

RAINY DAY RECESS AT SS/BCSD

This year on rainy days at recess, we are going to try something new. Any students who are appropri-ately dressed will be permitted to go

outside at recess for fresh air and exercise. The staff has ar-ranged for supervision on the gravel field, the playground, and the basketball court. Students will continue to have the option to remain inside on rainy days and will continue to be super-

vised as usual. If you wish your child to be permitted to play out-side on rainy days, please en-sure they have the proper cloth-ing (ie. jackets, hoods, boots, hats, umbrellas) to stay warm and dry.
