MARCH 15,2015

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23 The people of Judah practiced many abominations, even polluting God’s temple in Jerusalem. They mocked the messengers he sent among them, until he grew so angry he delivered them to the King of the Chaldeans. Those who weren’t killed were exiled and became servants for seventy years. Cyrus, King of Persia, was ordered to build a temple to God in Jerusalem, and he freed the servants as God had inspired him to do. Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Paul declares that God brought us to life in Jesus, though we had been dead from our sins. He reminds us that it was not a reward for our good service so no one should take credit. Instead, we must remember that it was not our doing, but a sign of God’s mercy and love for us. Gospel: John 3:14-21 God so loved the world, he sent us his only Son so that all who believed would have eternal life in him. The light came into the world, but those who were wicked avoided it, for fear that their evil deeds would be exposed. But those who believed were unafraid of the light, where it would be clear that their deeds were done in God.

FROM FR. HERB Sadly, two days after last week’s bulletin was printed, we heard the news of the unexpected death of Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York. For nine years, 2000-2009 he was our shepherd and in that spiritual role brought all of us closer to God. I am writing this letter to you on the morning after his funeral this past Tuesday. All the con-celebrating priests met across Madison Avenue, in one of the ballrooms of the Palace Hotel. Seeing priest friends from around the Archdiocese, we reminisced and shared stories of the Cardinal until it was time to make our way to the Cathedral. Walking down 49th street and then turning onto Fifth Avenue, I was recalling in my mind the two events that stood out for me that involved Cardinal Egan. The day before my mother died after a 4 year battle with cancer, Cardinal Egan was informed by my pastor at that time that she was near death. His Eminence right called Calvary Hospital to speak to my mother. I quietly found this out form the nurses that took care of my mom in her final months. The following day, upon hearing of my mom’s death, he called me to see if there was anything he could do to make this time easier for myself, my brothers and my aunt and uncle. The second memory was the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We have heard how His Eminence rushed down to minister to the injured and anointed the dead at St. Vincent’s Hospital. God bless him for doing that! What has not really been talked about how he insisted and carried out having two Catholic Priests on site at Ground Zero, beginning soon after the attacks and remaining there until that spring day in May, 2002, when the final beam was ceremonially removed. I had the opportunity to take part in that twice. It truly was a grace filled moment each time, seeing the recovery teams hard at work. The faith was alive and so strong. The respect was immense when remains were found and blessed. Many FDNY and NYPD personnel stated that by doing what Cardinal Egan did, in having priests there on site 24 hours a day, the evilness of the act of terrorism was being replaced with the dignity and love of God. I share these two memories with you because we have heard so much, about Cardinal Egan, these past days since his death. Most to do with his vast knowledge, his degrees in Cannon Law, being on the High Court of the church and being an advisor to Saint John Paul II. With all the gifts that this holy man had, I was and I am sure so many other people were blessed in seeing him in his role as a simple priest, brings God’s mercy and love to his people. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

- Rev. Herbert T. DeGaris

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Every Friday during Lent, Stations of the Cross is conducted in the Chruch. Please join us at 7:30 in the evening each Friday of Lent, including Good Friday.

This weekend we are conducting Commitment Weekend, or as is more popularly known as the in-pew solicitation. This is done annually for two main reasons, to give parishioners the opportunity to make a pledge and also for any parishioner who may not have received any mailings from the Appeal Office, especially most recent newly registered parishioners. As of Wednesday, March 11th we have raised $28,875.00 from 75 gifts. This puts at 60% of our goal of $48,000.00.

Lenten Retreat given by Fr. G Travers

A mini retreat of meditation and prayer will be offered by Fr. Travers at St. Patrick’s on Sunday March 22nd from 1-3pm. Fr. Travers will celebrate the 12pm mass followed by a brief gathering in the Lower Church Hall for coffee and cake. We will then assemble in the church for a guided meditation. If you have never experienced this form of prayer, Lent is the perfect time to do so. The second half of the retreat will be a presentation on how to have a more personally meaningful Holy Week. Fr. Travers will also be available to hear confessions immediately following the retreat. Questions: [email protected] or 781-0347.

St. Patrick’s Vacation Bible School

Our first volunteer meeting was very well attended and planning has begun for SonSpark Labs VBS. During the week of June 29th – July 3rd, we will discover the rich treasures of God’s love through the life of Jesus. Each session of SonSpark Labs involves exploring an amazing aspect of God’s life-changing plan. Our next volunteer team meeting will be held in April (Date-TBD) in the St. Patrick Religious Education Building. Adult and teen volunteers are needed prior to and during the week of VBS. Whether it’s a few days, we invite you to share your talents and find the joy that being part of the St. Patrick’s volunteer team can bring. If you would like to be involved, new faces are always welcome. Any questions: Theresa 781-0347 [email protected]

Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to bear witness to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish com-munity and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.
