How do latitude and longitude work?What do they measure?

• Latitude lines are parallel, they run east – west around the earth and are from 0 to 90 degrees North and South.

• Latitude measures the distance North or South of the Equator.

• Longitude Lines are also called Meridian, they run North – South and intersect at the poles. They are 0 to 180 degrees East and West.

• Longitude measures the distance East or West of the Prime Meridian

How do Literacy Rate, Infant Mortality, and Per Capita GDP pertain to a country’s level of development?

• Countries with a High Literacy Rate, Low Infant Mortality and High Per Capita GDP are considered More Developed countries.

• Low Literacy Rate, High Infant Mortality and Low Per Capita GDP are considered Less Developed

• Countries in between are considered Newly Industrializes

• Functional – has a hub or center – DFW metroplex, pizza delivery

• Perceptual – no clear boundaries – everyones opinion of it may be different – Tornado Alley, The Bible Belt

• Geography is the study of physical and human features of the earth.

What is GIS and what is it used for?

• GIS is Geographic Information Service• It is used to show different criteria/data or to

add layers to a map

What is GPS and what is it used for?

• GPS – Global Positioning Satellite• It is used to give absolute location – it can tell

exactly where your are.

What is human-environment interaction? What are some examples?

• Human-environment interaction is the way humans impact the environment and the way the environment impacts humans.

• Human’s build dams to make a lake, build levee’s to keep the water out of an area that is below sea level – example – New Orleans, and we pollute our earth.

• The environment can impact humans by climate – In Texas we don’t wear heavy coats and warm hats year round – we wear shorts and t-shirts in the summer– In Siberia people dress much warmer because it is so much colder up

near the arctic circle.

What is the Prime Meridian? Equator?

• The Prime Meridian is 0 longitude (runs North and South) and divides the earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

• The Equator is 0 latitude (runs East and West) and divides the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
