REHABILITATION OFENGINEERING STRUCTURES

RECOGNIZED KNOW-HOWFor several decades, BG Consulting Engineers has been actively involved in the rehabilitation of engineering structures and has successfully managed or is managing numerous complex projects throughout the world.

Through these projects, BG has gained comprehensive knowledge of all the ser-vices needed throughout the life cycle of a structure.

On the basis of its experience, BG has built up an efficient, structured working method-ology that takes into account the full range of constraints posed by the existing context of the structure, such as maintaining traf-fic, ensuring the durability of repairs, etc.

BG provides its clients with experienced engineers and experts who are able to de-fine efficient, rational technical solutions. Its many services have led to successful collaboration with a wide range of clients, such as local and national authorities, mo-torway companies, key accounts, industrial and public works companies.

OUTSTANDING PROJECTSBG has played a leading rule in such pres-tigious projects as the Chillon viaduct, the Adolphe and Rhône bridges, the motorway in Lucerne, the Grossmatt bridge, the A49 motorway viaduct over the River Isère and the Charmaix viaduct.

BG AND THE REHABILITATION OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES

BG Consulting Engineers has a long-established experience in monitoring and rehabilitating of engineering structures.

These services involve constantly seeking for innovative technical solu-tions. To address these challenges, BG has developed a range of skills enabling it to intervene at all stages of the life cycle of a structure.

LIFE CYCLEOF A STRUCTURE

SURVEILLANCE AND INSPECTIONIn-depth knowledge of factors that accelerate the deterioration of materials.

MONITORING ANDINSTRUMENTATIONAnalysis of existing bridges, moni-toring of deformation.

VERIFICATIONExpert appraisals of numerous structures and different materials.

REHABILITATION Retrofitting of numerous road and rail projects with considerable local and technical constraints.

WORLD WIDE EXPERTISE IN ENGINEERING STRUCTURESBG Consulting Engineers offers clients its extensive skills and experience to achieve innovative, high-quality results that take into account the constraints imposed by existing contexts for a wide range of projects.

RHÔNE BRIDGE (SWITZERLAND)Static and dynamic testing of the bridge, installation of instrumenta-tion and monitoring of deformation of the structure. Design and im-plementation of a complete reha-bilitation project for this 112 m long cable-stayed bridge.

On-site measurement of the natural frequency of a structure or part of a structure (cables stays).

ADOLPHE BRIDGE (LUXEMBOURG)Demolition and reconstruction of the 155 x 20 m deck and widening by 2 x 75 cm to accommodate a tram line. Reinforcement of the main arches and repairs to the masonry in keep-ing with the bridge's original appear-ance as designed by P. Séjourné in 1903. Expert appraisal, design of the rehabilitation project, supervision and client's technical advisor. Monitoring of deformations.

A49 VIADUCT OVER THE RIVER ISÈRE (FRANCE)Definition of a process for collecting paraffin wax at cable low points. Repairs to the polyethylene sheaths along the standard section. General proposal for rehabilitation of the cables.

LA TUFFIÈRE BRIDGE (SWITZERLAND)Static and dynamic testing of a multi-girder road bridge comprising three 33 m spans. Non-linear analysis of the cores using the stress field method. Design of the reinforcement project.

A16 TAVANNES – BÖZINGENFELD MOTORWAY (SWITZERLAND)Rehabilitation and widening of 22 motorway structures. Static and dynamic testing of the structures. Design of the reinforcement projects.

A5 COLOMBIER – CORNAUX MOTORWAY (SWITZERLAND)Static testing of 14 underpasses or open-cut sections and 2 pedestrian footbridges.

CHAUDERON CUT-AND-COVER (SWITZERLAND)Detailed inspection report and static testing of the structure.

RETAINING WALLS ON THE A16 LA HEUTTE – BÖZINGENFELDMOTORWAY (SWITZERLAND)Testing, conceptual and final design for reinforcement work on 21 retaining walls.

DESIGN OF REHABILITATION PROJECTS

CHILLON VIADUCT (SWITZERLAND)Remedial measures concerning drainage works to be carried out on the structures without interrupting motorway traffic. Seismic protec-tion measures. On-site supervision of works.

LUCERNE CITYRING (SWITZERLAND)Complete upgrade of the motorway. The main structure is the Reussegg viaduct, a 360 m long partly prefab-ricated, prestressed concrete struc-ture. Complete refurbishment, includ-ing reinforcement and replacement of the supports.

HOLZRÜTI BRIDGE (SWITZERLAND)A 120 m long prestressed concrete girder bridge comprising three spans. Complete rehabilitation of the structure, including structural reinforcement (shear force and slab reinforcement).

ALBERTIN BRIDGE (FRANCE)Rehabilitation and widening of the deck by installing transverse girders resting on the spandrels of the ex-isting masonry bridge and carrying the overhanging reinforced concrete slab. Compensation for overloads by removing the original earthfill. Design and inspection.

URÇAY BRIDGE (FRANCE)Rehabilitation and widening of the deck by overlaying a 90 m long mixed, 5-span structure on the existing masonry bridge. The new structure rests on the pier heads, which were reworked and reinforced with micro-piles. Design and inspection.

ST-PAUL BRIDGE ON THE ISÈRE (FRANCE)Reconfiguration of the structure, involving widening the deck by con-structing three triple girders with a curved underside surmounted by re-inforced concrete slabs, all of which is supported by the redeveloped existing masonry piers. Design and inspection.

RETAINING WALLS, A9 VENNES – VILLENEUVE MOTORWAY (SWITZERLAND)Testing, conceptual and construction designs for reinforcement and drainage of 10 retaining walls. The project involved reinforcing the structures with an anchored facing placed against the existing walls without interrupting motorway traffic.

CHARMAIX VIADUCT, MODANE(FRANCE)Girder bridge with nine 40 m spans − Separation of the piers from their footings by constructing a pre-stressed capping block to transfer loads to sliding supports. Design, definition of displacement correc-tions and owner's technical advisor.

GROSSMATT BRIDGE (SWITZERLAND)Complete inspection of the 90 m long, 5-span structure, design of the rehabilitation project including structural reinforcement (shear force, reinforcement, new piers). The piers are designed and sized to allow for displacement as they are located in an active landslide area.
