Welcome to the sixth edition of the Parks & Recreation magazine! We are excited

once again to offer many of your favorite programs and services along with some

new additions aiming to make you and your families stronger, healthier, smarter, and

happier!

Our mission is to enrich the lives of all citizens through diverse and innovative

recreational programs and services. With a focus on the arts, sports and games, the

outdoors, education, and celebrations, we provide both passive and active social

opportunities that build community and inspire personal growth. Our parks provide

support for passive and active recreation that contributes to enhancing the quality of

life. We encourage citizens to become active, responsible, and engaged members of the

community.

TO BE FIT, The Juggling Nutrition Magician Show(Ages 3-5)A fun-filled performance and motivating follow-up resources to turn kids on to healthy eating and active living. Featuring the power of live theater, amazing feats of juggling, music, magic, and audience participation. To Be Fit makes good eating great fun and gets the whole community excited and on board to work together to raise healthy children. The program features a 45 minute performance with a Comprehensive Follow-Up Activity Kit filled with hands-on activity sheets that make it fun and easy to keep the message alive at home all year long! This juggling show is sponsored by the Canton Public Library and the Canton Parks & Recreation Department and will be held in the community room at the Canton Public Library.Date: Friday, April 17 Time: 10:30 am

COOKING WITH MISS DEBBIE (Ages 7-12)This workshop – presented by Miss Debbie – teaches students to make a variety of dishes from scratch using fresh and local, organically grown ingredients. Students will try new foods and learn the importance of a healthy diet. Students will develop skills in math, reading, science, nutrition, and cultural awareness while they work cooperatively with others. The menu will include a “heart” healthy meal.Date: May 5 Time: 6 - 7:30 pm Fee: $15

TEEN PAINT NIGHTSips ‘N Canvas makes painting fun for all ages. This class allow you to relax in a group setting while an artist guides you through creating the featured painting of the evening step-by-step. Whether you are an aspiring artist or just looking to explore your creative side, you will go home with your own one-of-a-kind masterpiece. By the end of the evening, you will be amazed at the artwork you have created! We supply all the materials you will need: aprons, paint, canvas, brushes, and clean-up are included. FAMILY FISHING CLINIC (Ages 6-12)The Massachusetts Division of Fish & Wildlife will present their Angler Education Program with this 2-hour fishing clinic. Have you ever wanted to learn how to fish? Now’s your chance; let the Mass Wildlife Angler Education Program be your guide. We’ll have equipment on hand for use, as well as terminal tackle and live bait. You’ll learn the basics, from casting out to baiting up; and the best part – you’ll actually be able to fish. So come try your hand at this great past-time, guaranteed to catch some fun! Pre-registration is required. This program will be located at the Earl Newhouse Waterfront on Reservoir Pond. MASSACHUSETTS DEPT. OF CONSERVATION & RECREATION DAILY PARKS PASSThe Town of Canton is participating in the Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Use Nature As Your Guide Program. Canton residents have access to a DCR parks pass that provides free parking for one vehicle for one day at over 50 facilities in the Massachusetts state parks system. This daily pass is reserved for Canton residents only on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the Parks & Recreation office to reserve the pass and for more information.

Dabble and Draw (Ages 6-8)Are you interested in learning some new art techniques? Join Ms. Carol art classes as she teaches symmetry, line shape, and color mixing, borrowing various themes from nature. Art promotes self-esteem and confidence as young artists discover their own wonderful creativity. All materials are provided. Multiple classes offered through May and June. Look for specific dates on our website. Classes will be located at the Armando Center.Time: 4 - 5 pm Fee: $8/class

Little Ninjas Karate (Ages 3-5)Instructor: Sensei Cody RobynThis class, presented by the instructor of Excel Martial Arts in Canton, is designed specifically for pre-school age children. Instructor, Sensei Cody Robyn, will work on listening skills and methods for developing increased focus and attention. NFL Flag Football League (Grades 1-7)Canton Parks & Recreation is offering an NFL-sponsored spring flag football league. NFL Flag Football is a co-ed program for players of all abilities. This non-contact league is great for everyone! Participants do not need any experience playing football and will learn the fundamentals of football, teamwork, and have fun. Games/practices will be held on Sunday mornings. All players will receive reversible game jerseys with authentic NFL team logos.

Lego® – You Build It (Grades 2-4)Children will have the opportunity to participate with others in the fun-filled, creative world of LEGO. This program encourages children to create and build with the popular LEGO toys in both individual and group projects in a fun environment. Participants will also participate in LEGO activities such as design challenges and games. Super Soccer StarsInstructor: Super Soccer StarsSet in a fun, non-competitive environment, we offer age-specific programs which introduce children to the fundamentals of soccer through creative programming and imaginative games. Tennis in the Parks Instructed by USTA The tennis program where kids play while they learn! Led by an approved USTA Net Generation tennis coach, the program will focus on developing the skills to serve, rally and play - so it’s perfect for beginners. This program uses modified tennis balls, age-appropriate rackets, court sizes, and the latest fun and engaging activities that help players successfully learn and play the game quicker! STEM & Play: Basketball (Grades 3-5)Designed to pair strategic STEM-based activities with basic game-play and current hot topics, the STEM Sports® basketball curriculum educates participants on subjects including velocity and acceleration, basketball shoe design, tracking with technology and much, much more! Skyhawks puts the Sports in STEM. This program will be held in the gymnasium of the Hansen School. Dates: Fridays, May 8 - June 12Time: 3:45 - 4:45 pmFee: $95

Wilderness Explorers (Ages 4-6)Wildlife Explorers is the National Recreation and Park Association’s initiative that connects youth to nature by offering out-of-school programming happening at local park and recreation centers. This program will explore different parts of nature, animal and habitats in the community. This program is for children ages 4-6 years old and will take place at the Armando Center and the Earl Newhouse Waterfront. Youth Street Hockey ProgramLove street hockey? Participants learn the essentials to becoming a great hockey player all while keeping them engaged in a fun learning environment. Players will work on proper passing and shooting techniques as well as stick handling skills. They will also play multiple games each session. This program will be held at the Mutch Roller Hockey Rink.Dates: Thursdays, May 21 - June 11Time: 4 - 5 pmFee: $40

Youth Group Mountain Bike Ride (Ages 8-14)Join the Canton Parks & Recreation for a group mountain bike ride!! This program promotes safe riding skills in a fun environment. The program takes place on trails at Windsor Woods. Learn basic skills in this great outdoor sport where everyone participates and no one sits on the bench! Groups will be broken down by age and ability. Riders must be able to comfortably ride a two wheeler on pavement and non- pavement. This program is best suited for children with an interest in learning more about mountain biking, participating in group rides and a desire to put in some effort. Minimum equipment requirements: A bike with gears and handbrakes, a cycling helmet. This program is FREE but participants must register prior to the event.Dates: Tuesdays, June 2 & June 16Time: 5 - 6:30 pm

BLAST/CPR - Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training (Ages 11-14)Facilitator: Juanita Allen Kingsley, W-EMT Century Health SystemsClass has limited seatsAn American Academy of Pediatrics course that covers how to handle the basics of infant and childcare, how to react responsibly to medical emergencies and injuries, perform first aid for common childhood injuries and illnesses, and set up and run your own babysitting business. A certification of course completion will be made available. Includes CPR and AED certification.Location: Armando CenterDate: June 3 Time: 6 - 9 pm Fee: $90

ADULT PROGRAMS

PickleballPickleball is a paddle sport played with a whiffle ball on a badminton-sized court and a tennis-style net. A non-volley zone (or kitchen) prevents volleys close to the net, and the serving team cannot volley the return of serve. These unique rules favor players with less mobility and allow senior players to compete successfully with younger competitors. Pickleball is enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic abilities thanks to its ease of play and straight-forward rules. All players with all abilities are welcome to join and try this fast growing sport. No registration is required. Contact the Council on Aging for more information.

Yoga with Ellen (Ages 18+)Ellen Cosgrove-Cuneo, RYT 500 hrs. instructor, invites beginners and experienced individuals to explore the practice of Meridian Yoga. This practice incorporates a gentle flow of Hatha and Vinyasa which stimulates circulation, improves balance, strength, flexibility and alleviates stress. This 6-week program is being offered for all skill levels at the Williams Estate. App Inventors (for children entering Grades 4-7)Facilitator: Circuit LabWant to know how the apps work on your phone or iPad? Or do you already have the next great app idea, and just need to know how to make it? In this no-experience required course, we use MIT App Inventor software to make fun, creative apps for Android phones and tablets. We will also explore wireless communication by building custom bluetooth hardware controllers and readouts for our apps. Participants will learn both the programming and design aspects of creating great apps, and have the opportunity to build apps of their own with the support of Circuit Lab instructors. Campers will learn proper passing and shooting techniques, as well as stick handling techniques and correct defensive positioning. We will also have the campers learn basic plays. There will also be multiple scrimmages played throughout the week, and every Viking Field Hockey camp concludes with a tournament! During each day, kids will learn and practice specific sets of exercises that will help them tackle the Viking Ninja Warrior obstacle course at the conclusion of each day.
