What is “Reflexive?”

• Where a verb’s subject (the initiator of the action) is the same person as that verb’s object (the person acted upon).

• “We are enjoying ourselves.”

• The object “reflects” back to, or is a “reflection” of the subject.

• German relies on reflexive much more than English does.

What is “Reflexive?”

• Some things that are said reflexively in German may not be in English.

• To express “He is washing his hands,” German avoids the possessive (his hands) and uses the reflexive form “Er wäscht sich die Hände.”

• The reflexive “sich” (himself) is indicating whose hands are being washed.
